Мои раздачи на треккере - jazz / fusion / progWithout question, the greatest drummer who ever lived was Bernard "Buddy" Rich - and he'd have been the first to tell you. Like Muhammad Ali or John Barrymore, Rich (b. 1917-d. 1987] was as long on braggadocio as he was on talent But as some sage once observed, "If you can back it up. it ain't bragging."
The most sensational of drum soloists, Rich spent virtually his entire life in the spoflight. At 18 months, he toddled on stage to join his parents' vaudeville act By age seven, he was touring the world as "Traps, the Drum Wonder."
Rich left the footlights for the bandstand in 1936. breaking into the big time with clarinetist Joe Marsala's combo on 52nd Street. During the next decade he shone with some of the brightest swing bands — Bunny Berigan, Artie Shaw. Tommy Dorsey.
In 1946, with financial backing from ex-Dorsey bandmate (and sometime sparring partner) Frank Sinatra, Rich formed his first big band, which flopped commercially In the late '40s and into the '50s. he was a headliner with Norman Granz's Jazz At The Philharmonic troupe (and Norgran/Clef/Verve Records stable), performing and/or recording with such giants of swing and bop as Lester Young. Art Tatum. Coleman Hawkins. Benny Carter, Roy Eldridge. Lionel Hampton. Charlie Parker, Dizzy Gillespie, Thelonious Monk, Bud Powell, and Oscar Peterson. His volleys with fellow drumming demigod Gene Krupa unfailingly stopped the JATP show. When Rich left JATP in 1953 for Harry James' orchestra, he was said to be the highest salaried sideman anywhere
Rich intermittently led his own big bands on records in the '50s and '60s, in 1966 he was back at the helm of a powerful young outfit with which he toured for the last two decades of his life, despite a history of serious heart trouble. He was also a frequent guest on The Tonight Show. whose puckish, snowy-haired host delighted in Rich's rapid-fire wit as much as he did his machine gun single roll
Our set covers the years 1955 to 1961, with Rich spurring bands small, medium, and large (some of the arrangements are by Marty Paich and Ernie Wilkins, two of the best) The supporting cast includes all-stars from Doth coasts.
Half of the ten tracks are drum features Each solo shows a different facet of Buddy's art - the matchless snare drum control on "Jumpin' at the Woodside:' the soft-shoe brushwork on "Broadway" (featuring a wailing, Bird-like alto spot by the late, undervalued Sonny Criss): the speed-bag triplets and bass drum accents on "From The Slicks" and the dizzying snare-to-tom-tom combinations on "A Night In Tunisia."
There is also a heady game of percussive ping pong with bebop innovator Max Roach on "Tool. Toot, Tootsie, Goodbye." And listen to Rich driving a big band like Al Unser, Sr. behind the wheel of another Indy 500 winner.
in a somewhat bizarre career move (although given his long run in vaudeville perhaps it was not so strange). Rich announced in late-1956 that he was abdicating the drum throne in favor of a microphone. Ergo, we have included a vocal, wifh Buddy backed solidly by Sweets Edison. Ben Webster, et. al. Though his mic side manner was pleasing enough, the voice was hardly rich and, thankfully, he soon returned to his true calling.
