“The Swing of Things”
Late in 1997, veteran trumpeter and television composer Barry Anthony and vocalist Sylvia Rodriguez assembled a group of seven of Los Angeles's finest musicians to play several dance engagements throughout the LA area. Barry carefully arranged a repertoire of the music that had always been close to their hearts; the swingin' Jazz and Big Band standards and the romantic ballads of the 40's and 50's.
The band quickly gained popularity and soon found itself with an engagement at the elegant Sky Room, a new dining and dancing supper club located at the top of the Breaker's hotel in Long Beach California. The Sky Room, completely restored to it's original 1930's splendor, sports a completely art deco interior, the finest in dining and with the newly discovered “The Swing of Things,” the best in dancing and listening music.
Since early 1998, performing five nights a week, “The Swing of Things” has been playing to enthusiastic diners, dancers and music lovers, in a setting that befits the music. Barry's formula for a “small big band” that fits any performing situation, while still providing the exhilarating sound of the great Big Bands, works beautifully.
The band plays soft, romantic love songs early in the evening and after dinner, shouts out the strains of “Stompin' at the Savoy” and “Chattanooga Choo Choo” for the dancers. Many are content just to sit and listen to the gorgeous singing of the female vocalist, or the great jazz players in the band knock out one exciting chorus after another.
As Barry points out, “This band is really a tribute band that honors the great legendary musicians who created deeply heartfelt music for us all to enjoy.”
Indeed the great music makers are represented by this outfit. Names such as Benny Goodman, Duke Ellington, Louis Jordan, Billie Holiday, Frank Sinatra, Nat Cole, Harry James and Glenn Miller amongst others, dot the song list of this most sonorous and professional sounding band. The group's ever-expanding repertoire includes Latin favorites, mellow 50's jazz and jump music.
“The Swing of Things” certainly has the musical formula for excitement and pleasure whenever and wherever they perform.
