Fats Waller
Fats Waller can be seen as one of the most gifted jazz virtuosos in the history of American music. Thomas Wright "Fats" Waller was born on the 21 st May, 1904 in New York as the 5th child of a poor black family. His mother was a musician, and his father was a pastor at the Abessinian Baptist Church. Waller grew up under Petty bourgeoise and decent circumstances in Harlem. He was told by his father to stay away from jazz, which according to his father had "come from the Devil's workshop". Waller grew up surrounded by hymns and lessons from the Bible.
His regular piano lessons and theory lessons at school were - thanks to his mother's initiative - supplemented by the excellent training of the composers and pianists Leopold Godowsky and Carl Bohm. Alongside the piano Waller was also trained on the acoustic organ, which he was to use later masterly in his jazz music.
Waller's music career began at the age of 15 in the Lincoln Theatre in Harlem, when he got a job as a pianist and organist accompanying silent movies. His father followed this development with trepidation. Waller began at this point to form
friendships with other musicians, who had become aware of him through his playing.
He got to know Andy Razaf, a descendant of the legendary Queen of Madagascar, after winning the 1st prize in a piano contest. Razaf was later to become his preferred lyricist.
James J. Johnson heard him playing shortly afterwards and offered to complete his training on the piano. Johnson was the most highly-rated pianist in New York at the time and became Waller's greatest idol, introducing him to jazz. Less fortunate was Waller's meeting with Edith Hatchett, whom he married at the age of 17. After giving birth to her first child she split up from him, but Waller had to pay alimony for the rest of his life.
Fats Waller got to know Count Basie, with whom he recorded several titles, in 1921. He produced his first record as a piano soloist in 1922 under the direction of Clarence Williams. He soon belonged to the great pianists of New York and played alongside James P Johnson and Willie Smith. He was highly-rated in the scene also on account of his compositions. Waller eventually married for the 2nd time, had not however developed any sense of responsibility in the meantime.
He lived extravagantly, paid little attention to his health, and sold his songs for a few dollars. He would drink the nights away with his friends, then compose music within a few minutes. When Fletcher Henderson once gave him 9 hamburgers, which Waller ate on the spot, he composed as a thank-you 9 titles in a short space of time.
Waller belonged to Erskine Tate's band in 1925 and 1926 in Chicago. He performed on recordings of Henderson, appeared first and foremost as a solo artiste until 1931 before forming his own band in the same year. His periods of depression made his uncertain financial situation even worse, so that he finally decided to leave for Europe. After his return fortune began to smile on the musician. He was engaged by the radio station CBS and made a series of recordings under the name "Fats Waller & His Rhythm" which became of historical significance through their unity. Only 11 of these pieces were piano solos, the rest were sung by Waller, some were just too funny for words. He went on tour with his band and enthralled his audiences by rolling his eyes, mischievously winking and twitching his ears, and this show made him enormously popular.
Alongside his performances with his band he carried on working as a soloist, appeared in Europe in 1937 and 1938, and performed in several films, in which he usually took over the part of the clown.
Whilst staying in England for the 2nd time he quickly composed the "London Suite". He improvised 6 solo pieces on the piano inside just 1 hour, after his manager had described the 6 districts of London and their atmosphere.
Unfortunately his excessive lifestyle took it's toll as of 1942. Waller was so drunk during the 1 st half of a concert organised by Eddie Condon that he could not play. His doctor advised him to give up drinking immediately and to start to take life easy. Waller dissolved his orchestra, but died shortly afterwards on the 15th December, 1943.
