This session, recorded by GHB on April 6, 1990, was the final recording session of the great New Orleans bass player Chester Zardis. He was one of the most important bass players and rhythm men in the entire history of New Orleans jazz. We are proud to have recorded Chester Zardis on many occasions and he may be heard on many of our CDs. In fact, we have one of his first recording sessions on our American Music label with George Lewis and his New Orleans Stompers on AMCD-100 and 101.
Chester Zardis may be heard on many GHB recordings. The artistry of Sammy Rimington may also be heard on many GHB sessions both under his own name and with other groups of important jazz artists. Both Sammy Rimington and Chester Zardis were part of the famous Palm Court Jazz Band and were recorded live in Tokyo, Japan with Louis Nelson, the great New Orleans trombonist on BCD-231.

CHESTER ZARDIS’ NEW ORLEANS FOOTWARMERS
The Sammy Rimington Band performed at the New Orleans Jazz & Heritage Festival at the Fair Grounds in April, 1990. Sammy of course, Fredrik John (trombone), Jon Marks (piano) and Sven Stahlberg (drums). As Karl Kronqvist, the regular bass player of the band could not make this trip, we were very proud and happy to have the veteran bassist Chester Zardis in his place.
At this time Cliff "Kid" Bastien from Canada visited New Orleans. As Sammy and "Kid" Bastien had played together on various jam sessions during the years, but had never played a whole session together, Sammy suggested to George Buck the idea of recording "Kid" Bastien and Chester Zardis with The Sammy Rimington Band. The recording took place. Most of the tracks were "first takes" and the whole CD was made from one session only. Some of these old tunes are from "Kid" Bastien's regular repertoire and take on new form by the band's unique approach to them.
