Willie The Lion" Smith, with his allure, his dashing appearance, his impeccable manners, was a colourful character. During his concerts he always appeared wearing his derby hat and a tat cigar stuck in the corner of his mouth. He introduced every piece he played with a commentary, otten an anecdote. "The Lion" was an imposing figure on stage with his ivory-topped cane, his hat at a rakish angle—and the ever-present cigar! Why the nickname "the Lion"? Some attribute it to his habit of roaring with pleasure during his solos but most people agree it was a result of the courage he displayed during the 1914-18 war when he fought—tike a lion!—as a volunteer in France. Whatever the truth may be, as he remarked himself with a sly smile "Everything they say about the Lion is true!". For over a decade Willie Smith was a legend in Harlem, a sort of "wise man" in the black ghetto to whom people turned lor help or advice. He and James P. Johnson and Fats Waller were a formidable trio, taking part in jam sessions, house rent parties, memorable cutting contests, all ol which confirmed their status as the three piano giants. They were all past masters in the New York art of stride, using their left hand to create a solid backing for their solos.
William Henry Joseph Bonaparte Bertholoff Smith, belter known as Willie "The Lion" Smith, was born on 24 November 1897 in Goshen near New York. When he was still very young his mother, an excellent pianist and organist, taught him to play the piano on which he excelled. In 1917 he volunteered to join the armed forces and fought in France as a gunnery sergeant. On his return to the US he did various tours, accompanying female vocalists, before finally settling in New York. He played regularly at "Pod's and Jerry's" where all Ihe jazz musicians came to listen to him, his most lamous and fervent admirer being none other than Duke Ellington who dedicated Portrait Ot The Lion to him that was recorded in 1938. The "Lion" returned the compliment with his recording in Paris in 1949 ol Portrait Of The Duke, which is included on this CD. Smith, unlike the other great stride pianists, began to record relatively late. While James P. Johnson and Fals Waller were recording regularly in the early 20s, Smith scorned the studios. His real recording career did not start until the mid-30s with a small group. He did not cut his first solo records until 1938 but, after this, he recorded prolifically, either under his own name or alongside musicians such as Mezz Mezzrow, Sidney Bechet and even the Kansas City blues shouter Big Joe Turner. This latter association may seem somewhat bizarre but the results were excellent, as is clear on Jumpin' Down Blues, later, in 1949 and 1950, the Hot Club de France organised an extensive tour for Smith in France and Europe. He came back to Europe once more in 1966.
Smith's contribution to jazz was unique: the freshness of his music coupled with outstanding originality. He was not only a remarkable soloist but also an exceptional orchestra pianist, playing with all the great names—Fats Waller, James P. Johnson, Count Basie, Earl Hines... His relaxed style provided the perfect backing both lor soloists and ensembles. His solid accompaniment, his continual awareness of what the other musicians were doing is evident on all the sides he recorded with his small group in 1935 {Harlem Joys, Breeze...). Although his style was based on stride, he did not use it as much as his colleagues, Irequently resorting to a very personal type ol break, suddenly interrupting the melody. His touch was light yet firm. His active left hand provides such an intricate counterpoint to the right that it is sometimes difficult to determine which hand is playing the melody. A pianist generally uses his left hand to accompany the improvisations he plays with his right but Smith's left hand could produce completely unexpected backings that entirely changed the atmosphere of a piece. In 1935 Smith led a small group with an unusual line-up: cornet, clarinet (his old (nend Cecil Scott) and washboard. Their music was lively, jolly, almost impulsive, lor there was a great complicity between the lour of them (What Can I Do, Breeze). Then came the 1937 formation with Dave Nelson on trumpet, Buster Bailey on clarinet and Bob Carroll on tenor sax, which finally gave the latter a chance to prove himself for his gifts on tenor sax had not always been recognised. His solos on Swampland, More Than That and I'm Out Of Breath (a version ol Squeeze Me) prove how much he had learnt from his idol Chu Berry in terms ol breath control, timing and use of vibrato. Buster Bailey contributes some splendid, laid-back, meandering solos that make the most of Smith's excellent accompaniment.
During the 40s Sidney Bechet invited Smith to take part in several recording sessions. Bechet admired "the Lion's" personality, the quality of his accompaniments and his original improvisations (I'm Coming Virginia and the rousing Lime/rouse Blues). On his own composition You're The Limit , alter Bechet's lirst chorus, Smith takes otf at double tempo in a brilliant stride solo before Bechet's soprano sax takes up the original tempo in a breathtaking conclusion. Smith's duo with Buck Clayton on Stormy Weather is also magnificent. Ex-managers of clubs associated with the HCF will certainly remember the circular they received Irom Hugues Pamassie who organised Smith's first French tour in 1949, listing all the "dos and don'ts" to be observed during the famous pianist's visit to their respective towns. Above all he only smoked top-quality cigars, nothing inferior acceptable! Also, he always opened his show with a rendition of the "Marseillaise" and "La Madelon" and he had not understood why, at his first concert, the audience had not risen for the French national anthem. So, everyone on their feet for Ihe "Marseillaise"!
Willie "The Lion" Smith was also a gifted composer. His Echoes Of String, Passionnette, Finger Buster, Rippling Waters reveal not only a great writer but also a superb musician, a man who never failed to surprise...like his music. God bless the "Lion"!
