Cradle Of Jazz Sampler J. Neat Montgomery was a pianist, and led several different orchestras during the Twenties in the area around Atlanta. Sam Morgan was regarded to be one of the best cornet players from New Orleans. The famous Tailgate trombone player Jim Robinson belonged to his band from 1923 until 1932. Jack Pettis was bandleader and tenor saxophonist. He initially played with the famous "New Orleans Rhythm Kings" in Chicago. He also played with Jack Teagarden, Adrian Rollini and Joe Venuti and Jed his own bands such as "Jack Pettis & His Pets" and "The Whoopee Makers". Andy Freer came from St. Louis with his band, then went to New York where they played in the "Cotton Club". The combo was taken over by Cab Calloway after Preer's death. George McCIennon was a blues clarinetist, who also played jazz titles such as the "New Orleans Wiggle" from the well-known bandleader and composer A.J. Piron. Edna Winston was a relatively unknown blues singer who recorded "Pail In My Hand" with the band of Thomas Morris. Louis Dumaine was a cornet player, and led a brass-band in New Orleans alongside his "Jazzola Eight". Clarence Williams (1893 - 1965) was a pianist, composer and bandleader, became however famous first and foremost as a record producer, manager and promoter during the early jazz era. He pushed the careers of Louis Armstrong, Sidney Bechet and Bessie Smith. He was active as the studio production manager of his band "Blue Five" for OKeh Records in New York from 1921 to 1923. Vance Dixon was a clarinetist from Chicago and recorded the popular song "Crazy Quilt" with his trio. The "Ross De Luxe Syncopators" came from Miami and were led by, amongst others, the bandleader Cootie Williams (1908 - 1985). Williams worked later with Fletcher Henderson, Duke Ellington, Benny Goodman and Charlie Parker. The clarinetist and saxophonist Edmond Hall (1901 - 1967), who played with Billie Holiday, Lionel Hampton, Coleman Hawkins and Louis Armstrong, also belonged to the band. Paul Howard was one of the jazz pioneers from the West Coast. The multi-talent Lionel Hampton and the trombone player Lawrence Brown, who later played with Louis Armstrong and Duke Ellington, were also in his band. Bennie Moten (1894 - 1935) was a pianist, bandleader and composer from Kansas City. After he had played with Walter Page he formed his own quintet in 1923, to which the cornet player Lammar Wright and the trombone player Thamon Hayes belonged. The constantly expanding orchestra was soon the best in Kansas City - especially after being joined by Count Basie, who later took over the orchestra. The "Bennett's Swampianders" thanked the trumpeter Walter "Jack" Bennett for their name but the actual initiator of the band - as with the "Five Hot Chocolates" was the pianist J.С Johnson. Phil Baxter was a bandleader and singer from Texas. His band was called the "Texas Tommies" and played in the latter part of the Twenties in the area around Kansas City. Thomas Morris recorded many records in New York as a cornet player and bandleader, and accompanied on many occassions female blues singers such as Mamie Smith, who is supposed to have recorded the very first blues vocals in 1920. Johnny De Droit led one of the most acclaimed bands of New Orleans, and performed in the best hotels and restaurants in town. The trumpeter Lew Weiner - his name was always spelled incorrectly on records - was the leader of the "Lou Weimer's Gold & Black Aces", a successful college band from Indiana. Reb Spikes was the business-like bandleader of the "Reb Spikes Majors And Minors" from Los Angeles. Charles Creath (1890 - 1951) led a band from 1916 until 1940 in St. Louis, where he became very popular as a trumpeter. Joseph "King" Oliver (1885 - 1938) was an outstanding cornet player, and one of the most important early bandleaders and composers. He formed in 1920 his successful "King Oliver's Creole Jazz band", in which the young Louis Armstrong also played. Slim Lamar came from New Orleans, as did most of the members of his band, but played first and foremost in Miami. The "New Orleans Owls" were successful during the Twenties in their hometown and had members such as the brass player Eddie Miller and the guitarist Nappy Lamare. The Original Dixieland Jazz Band was the most important white ensemble of the pre-modern jazz era and recorded the very first jazz record in 1917. The cornet player Nick LaRocca and the trombone player Eddie Edwards belonged to the formation. The Original Memphis Five existed from 1922 until 1928 and was one of the leading white Dixieland bands. They also appeared under the name "The Cotton Pickers". The trumpeter Phil Napoleon (born 1901) was the. founder member and bandleader and took on the trombone player Miff Mole as the second star soloist. Napoleon also recorded with his own bands, such as "Phil Napoleon & His Orchestra" and "Napoloen's Emperors" - in which the Dorsey brothers and Joe Venuti played. Napoleon was also behind the name "The New Orleans Black Birds", together with the trombone player Miff Mole and the clarinetist and alto saxophonist Jimmy Dorsey. The violinist and bandleader Joe Venuti (1903 - 1978) and the guitarist Eddie Lang (1902 - 1933) proved with their recordings the compatibility of their instruments in jazz. These outstanding musicians, who were also close friends, played with many big stars such as Paul Whiteman, Red Nichols, the Dorsey brothers, Bix Beiderbecke and Benny Goodman. Paul Whiteman (1890 - 1967) was the most popular bandleader of the Twenties and was also known as the "King Of Jazz". Bix Beiderbecke, the Dorsey brothers, Frank Trumbauer, Joe Venuti, Eddie Lang, Jack Teagarden, Red Nichols and Miff Mole belonged to the up-and-coming stars who played in his formation. The white cornet player Red Nichols (1905 - 1965) was especially popular as of 1926 through his band "Red Nichols & His Five Pennies". Nichols recorded countless records - also under other bandnames such as "Red & Miffs Stompers" with the trombone player Miff Mole and as "Red & His Big Ten" - with stars such as Glenn Miller, Benny Goodman, Joe Venuti and Jack Teagarden. Nichols played with, amongst others, "George Olsen & His Music" before forming and leading his own bands. Roger Wolfe Kahn used the soloists Miff Mole (trombone), Joe Venuti (violin) and Eddie Lang (guitar) in his highly-acclaimed orchestra.
