Though no longer with us, Ray Charles is proof that the American Dream is alive and well. Losing his sight at an early age due to untreated glaucoma, he took up the piano and never looked back, fashioning a career that touched millions of listeners and inspired generations of performers.
His handicap never affected his career adversely. 'I was going to do what I was going to do anyway. I played music since I was three. I could see then. I lost my sight when I was seven. So blindness didn't have anything to do with it It didn't give me anything. And it didnttake nothing/ Indeed, his other senses compensated as he listened to swing bands, country and western singers and gospel quartets on the radio. 'My ears were sponges, soaked it all up/ he told David Ritz, who collaborated with the singer on his autobiography, Brother Ray.
Born in Albany, Georgia, on 23 September 1930, Ray started performing music professionally at 16 in Florida where he was brought up. Born Ray Charles Robinson, he dropped his surname to avoid confusion with boxer Sugar Ray Robinson, but had to battle just as hard as his namesake. He found his way to Los Angeles via the Seattle club circuit where he formed the McSon Trio with Gosady McGee (guitar) and Milton Garred (bass).
They signed to Downbeat (later Swingtime) Records in 1949 and cut a series of singles, including the self-penned debut 'Confession Blues'. You can also hear Ray with the McSon Trio here on tracks like 'Ain't That Fine?', 'She's On The Ball' and 'Honey Honey'.
Atlantic Records came on the scene in 1952, buying out Ray's contract for $2,500, and he spent the rest of the decade establishing a reputation as a dynamic performer. His breakthrough hit came in 1955 with 'I Got A Woman1, recorded in a radio-station studio in Atlanta with his seven-piece band and included here, while his first million-seller came four years later with signature track "What'd I Say1. He survived the many fads and fashions of the Sixties with integrity intact, pushing musical boundaries with albums like 'Genius Plus Soul Equals Jazz' and 'Modern Sounds In Country And Western Music' and helping create the kaleidoscopic music scene we have today.
In 1965 Charles was arrested for possession of heroin, spent time in a California sanatorium in an attempt to beat his addiction and stopped performing for a year, the only break of his long career. When he emerged he resumed his schedule, touring for up to 10 months and releasing an album (or two) every year.
He remained a keen live performer to the end and, even in his sixties, was still able to enthral a capacity crowd with a show that harked back to his heyday. As well as being a gifted musician, the Genius was always a great showman. Just weeks before his death, age 73, he told the New York Times Tm going to keep touring, keep performing, it's in my blood. I'm like Count Basie or Duke Ellington. Until the good Lord calls my number, that's what I'm going to do.'
Ray Charles was much honoured in his lifetime. He was one of the first musicians inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1986 and received a Lifetime Achievement Grammy the following year, one of a dozen he earned. Among numerous other awards was the Presidential Medal for the Arts in 1993.
More topically, a bio-pic, titled simply Ray, won its star Jamie Foxx an Oscar after its 2004 release while a Ray Charles Museum was set to open in late 2007 on the site of the Los Angeles studios where he recorded for fully 40 years. His private life was complex; twice divorced, he left behind 12 children, 20 grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.
Though the Ray Charles story officially ended in 2004, numerous artists he's influenced still carry on his work - Stevie Wonder, Van Morrison, Joe Cocker, Billy Joel and Simply Red's Mick Hucknall, to name but a few. Jools Holland often plays 'Mess Around', one of our featured tracks, while another, the gospel-inspired 'Hallelujah, I Love Her So', was an early Beatles standard with Paul McCartney on vocals.
On Charles death, Joe Levy, music editor or Rolling Stone magazine, offered the following tribute: 'Ray Charles is the guy who combined the sacred and the secular, he combined gospel music and the blues. He's called a genius because no-one could confine him to one genre. He wasnt just rhythm and blues... Except for BB King, there's no other figure who's been as important or has endured so long.'
