Emilia Mårtensson is a London based Swedish/Slovenian vocalist and composer of considerable repute. Since graduating from Trinity College of Music, Greenwich in 2007, Emilia has built a well- deserved reputation as one of the most exciting young vocalists on the UK Jazz scene. Her gently expressive voice and highly personal compositions are firmly rooted within the folklore and countryside of her native southern Sweden, adding to the mystique and allure of a distinctive and truly original artist.
Her critically acclaimed contributions (both as vocalist and lyricist) to Jazz’s newest stars Kairos 4Tet no doubt helped them bring home a 2011 MOBO Award, while her distinctive voice led The Observer to deem her ‘The New Face of British Jazz 2012′. In the same year, she released her debut album ‘And So It Goes…’ on Babel Label. The album is a project between Emilia and established pianist Barry Green, which documents the duo’s shared love of a wide range of material, presenting fresh and exciting arrangements of a superb choice of songs. Drawing on the wistful folk songs of Emilia’s homeland alongside some of the greatest songs of the last century, the recording is a finely poised blend of Jazz, Folk and artful Alternative Pop. The album was listed as one of the top ten best albums in 2012 by JazzWise.
On new album ‘Ana’, dedicated to her grandparents and named after Emilia’s Slovenian grandmother’s Ana-Emilia, Mårtensson continues to blur the lines between Jazz/Folk and Alt- Pop through her own compositions as well as collaborations with some of the finest writers that London’s music scene has to offer. Personal interpretations of tracks by Paul Simon and Joe Henderson also feature and of course a couple of Swedish Folk songs, one of which Emilia wrote herself. This second album demonstrates Emilia’s constant evolution as both a songwriter and performer, retaining tender poignant tones with powerful observations of human nature through her lyrics. The musicians on the album fully compliment this journey, adding their own magical touches to the heartfelt arrangements.
Emilia has toured the UK extensively and in 2013 was nominated by Svensk Jazz for their so called Pulsslags Turnen, commissioning a 2 week-long tour across Sweden, along with her band. Emilia has also performed in venues and festivals such as Ronnie Scott’s Jazz Club, The Royal Albert Hall, Pizza Express Jazz Club, The Vortex, The 606 Club, on Jamie Cullum’s BBC Radio 2 show, The Love Supreme Jazz Festival, The London Jazz Festival, Cheltenham Jazz Festival (to name just some of the places). She has also appeared on large international stages and in festivals such as Bimhuis in Amsterdam, Sunset Sunside Jazz Club in Paris, Baladoor Jazz Festival in Slovenia, Vossa Jazz Festival in Norway, Umea Jazz Festival in Sweden and Ystad Jazz Festival in Sweden and Fashing in Stockholm.
Apart from her own albums, Emilia collaborates on many other projects, such as the new ‘Folktronic’ project, going by the name Embla, featuring some of London’s top producers and musicians. Emilia is also featured on many other projects, continuing success with Kairos 4tet and more recently featuring on Fringe Magnetic’s new album Clocca and Samuel Crowe’s new album Towards the Centre of Everything. She also recently recorded vocals for Dave McKeans’s new film La Luna as well as music by accordionist Janez Dovc for the Slovenian movie ‘The Tree’.

Over the last decade, Emilia Mårtensson has built a well- deserved reputation as one of the most exciting young vocalists on the UK jazz scene. But you wont find her simply churning out hackneyed jazz standards. Her gently expressive voice and highly personal compositions are firmly rooted in the folklore and the countryside of her native southern Sweden, adding to the mystique and allure of a distinctive and truly original artist.
As a youngster, Mårtensson immersed herself in the recordings of jazz greats such as Ella Fitzgerald, Billie Holiday and Anita O’Day. At the same time, she and a group of local boys were playing live jazz in her parents’ restaurant, which Emilia would later transform into one of the most successful jazz cubs in southern Sweden.
But, for all her jazz background, Swedish folk song was always deep in Emilia’s heart. You can hear it clearly, carved like an ancient rune, in the haunting and ethereal tones of her voice, in the dark melancholy of her storytelling and in the intimate, nocturnal hush of her timeless confessionals. Allied with the jazz musician’s effortless sense of timing and expression, it’s enough to make Mårtensson a very special voice indeed.
Mårtensson’s second album, Ana – named after her Slovenian grandmother – is where she pulls together all the many different strings that have illuminated her art.
Here, Mårtensson resumes her fascination with interpreting the songs of others, bringing her own unique vision to compositions by Jamie Doe, Barnaby Keane and Emine Pirhasan. She also pays homage to her great love for 70s pop singer-songwriters like Joni Mitchell and James Taylor, with a sly and sighing take on Paul Simon’s “Everything Put Together Falls Apart.” It’s a luxuriant performance enhanced by a lush acoustic setting, and captured in rich analogue detail by producers Rory Simmons and Alex Bonney at London’s Fish Factory Recording Studios.
Here, too, you can hear the calling of Mårtensson’s Swedish soul. “När Som Jag På Mitt Adertonde Å’’ (“When I Was In My Eighteenth Year”) is a traditional Swedish folk tune, which Mårtensson describes as “a dark song, this one, a suicide letter from a young girl to her parents” – leant an almost unbearably poignant tension by its sparse and wintry arrangement.
A swirling, dreamy version of saxophonist Joe Henderson’s tune “Black Narcissus,” with original lyrics, is where all these impulses come together. “I fell in love with these melodies that are quite dark and simple to sing, for example “Black Narcissus,” says Mårtensson. “It’s not a folk tune, but it does have that kind of melancholic vibe to it and a very folky essence to the melody line. I just find myself wanting to sing these melodies.”
On Ana, Mårtensson is reunited with bright young UK pianist Barry Green, with whom she recorded her debut And So It Goes…Green’s nimble runs and quizzical chords supply fresh invention across the whole set, pushed on by the mellifluous grooves of double-bassist Sam Lasserson, and the subtle rhythmic shadings of percussionist Adriano Adewale. Finally, The Fable String Quartet wraps Mårtensson’s sensitive arrangements in delicately beautiful yet deeply lush swathes.
It all adds up to an unforgettable experience.
