The [original] album was released in 1990 on Go! Discs in the United Kingdom and in 1991 on London Records in the United States. The album was praised by critics and embraced by fans. It was the result of nearly three years in the studio with a string of acclaimed producers. Each attempted to capture the sound sought by Lee Mavers, the lead singer and principal songwriter of the band. Unfortunately, due to Mavers’ exacting expectations, the sound eluded each of the producers, and the album eventually released was immediately disowned by the band. A new version of the album, recorded by Mike Hedges (who has also worked with U2, Manic Street Preachers and the Cure) was found on a cassette, this new version was digitally remastered and released for the first time as part of The La’s: Deluxe Edition. This edition also includes previously unreleased archive recordings and radio sessions by the band, as well as deluxe packaging and expanded sleevenotes. When the La’s released their debut album in 1990, it made immediate waves in the British pop scene, as well as American college radio. Drawing from the hook-laden, ringing guitars of mid-’60s British pop as well as the post-punk pop of the Smiths, the La’s’ self-titled first album had a timeless, classic feel. It seemed like effortless music, yet that was not the case. From their inception in 1986, lead singer/guitarist/songwriter Lee Mavers was a perfectionist with a nearly obsessive eye for detail. Consequently, the La’s were never able to totally fulfill their promise. Mavers formed the group in Liverpool with bassist John Power, guitarist Paul Hemmings, and drummer John Timson. On the strength of their demo tapes, Go! Discs signed the band in 1987, releasing the single “Way Out”; it received good reviews, yet it wasn’t a chart success. Similarly, the following year’s “There She Goes” received good press yet stalled on the charts. With a new lineup featuring bassist James Joyce, guitarist Cammy (born Peter James Camell), and Lee’s brother Neil on drums, the La’s began recording their debut album that same year. The record didn’t appear until 1990. Even though Mavers claimed it was rush released, the Steve Lillywhite-produced The La’s received glowing reviews and strong sales; a re-released “There She Goes” entered the U.K. Top 20 and hit number 49 in America. For most of 1991, the band was on tour. At the end of the year, they went back to the studio to record their follow-up. This time, Mavers was in complete control and he took his time to perfect the album, re-recording tracks and rewriting songs. The La’s disappeared without a trace from the pop music scene. Some albums exist outside of time or place, gently floating on their own style and sensibility. Of those, the La’s lone album may be the most beguiling, a record that consciously calls upon the hooks and harmonies of 1964 without seeming fussily retro, a trick that anticipated the cheerful classicism of the Brit-pop ’90s. But where their sons Oasis and Blur were all too eager to carry the torch of the past, Lee Mavers and the La’s exist outside of time, suggesting the ’60s in their simple, tuneful, acoustic-driven arrangements but seeming modern in their open, spacy approach, sometimes as ethereal as anything coming out of the 4AD stable but brought down to earth by their lean, no-nonsense attack, almost as sinewy as any unaffected British Invasion band. But where so many guitar pop bands seem inhibited by tradition, the La’s were liberated by it, using basic elements to construct their own identity, one that’s propulsive and tuneful, or sweetly seductive, as it is on the band’s best-known song, “There She Goes.” That song is indicative of the La’s material in its melodic pull; the rest of the album has a bit more muscle, whether the group is bashing out a modern-day Merseybeat on “Liberty Ship” and bouncing two-step “Doledrum,” or alluding to Morrissey’s elliptical phrasing on “Timeless Melody.” This force gives the La’s some distinction, separating them from nostalgic revivalists even as their dedication to unadorned acoustic arrangements separates them from their contemporaries, but it’s this wildly willful sensibility—so respectful of the past it can’t imagine not following its own path—that turns The La’s into its own unique entity, indebted to the past and pointing toward the future, yet not belonging to either.
