The Beginning (2004-2007)
Justin Mauriello started I Hate Kate while he was still in Zebrahead - in 2004. It was a creative outlet that he wasn't able to display in Zebrahead. As Justin puts it, “Playing with other musicians is like being in a relationship and being able to have sex with other people. It's brilliant ... and in music ... it's a-ok. Anywho ... I was playing with the Kates, one thing lead to another and after sometime, this band became my full time love.”
Justin’s take on his recruits – “Mike is very loyal and quiet...a fantastic drummer who loves to get high. His truck needs new shocks though...not a good vehicle to ride in if you're hung over. Scott is an amazing bass player and a great friend. He has the heart of gold and a work ethic that can rival that of Donald Trump. His girlfriend has pretty eyes. Jeremy eats a lot.”
The name “I Hate Kate” came to be through a friend of the band - "The Grease". “The Greasafile had a girlfriend named Kate who was the devil. She was Satan. An absolute bitch and a ho.” One day Justin said.."Man I hate Kate" ... next thing you know ...
The first songs that were available for listening on their website were 'Bed of Black Roses,' 'Always Something,' and 'Out of My Head.' Over time, more songs were available for download from the band's website, or for listening to on the band's Myspace page. The band released its first EP in 2006 titled "Act One" featuring a view songs they alreade had released earlier on ther Homepage.
Embrace The Curse (2007-Present)
On 25 April 2007 the band's new album, titled "Embrace The Curse," featuring several re-recordings from Act One and other songs they released earlier on their The song "Bed of Black Roses" and more recently, "Always Something" have been singled out by the band on their Myspace page as the song to request from local radio stations.
After wrapping up their stint with Social Distortion in May, I Hate Kate’s off to Japan for a short club tour. Justin’s traveled Japan a few times, “The fans are amazing. They have a real appreciation for music. And they have energy in the audience I’ve never seen anywhere else in the world. You feed off that energy. It’s an experience. It’s better than most drugs I’ve done.”
After Japan, they’ll be back in the states to make a video and play a few radio festivals this summer. They plan to continue touring through 2007, but no firm plans to share yet.
Style
I Hate Kate is a blend of many styles of music. Justin has always written music with a pop rock sensibility, and the music he has created in I Hate Kate is a perfect example of that. It also brings a tasteful blend of a lot of his earlier musical influences. Justin says he went through several musical phases as a kid: “I had a metal phase, a punk phase, even a new wave phase. I was like, ‘Oh Man, I love this shit!’ and I started growing my hair out because of Metallica. Then I heard Depeche Mode. ‘Fuck that.’ Cut my hair. Started getting into Fugazi, ‘Oh Fuck that, I don’t drink anymore, I’m straightedge.’ Then I got older. I’m like, ‘OK. I like a little bit of this, a little bit of this, a little bit of this.’ ”
