EMI Classic masterpiece
The reissue of classical music masterpieces by ESOTERIC has attracted a lot of attention, both for its uncompromising commitment to recreating the original master sound, and for using hybrid Super Audio CD (SACD) technology to improve sound quality. This series marks the first hybrid SACD release of EMI classics title that has been mainstays of the catalog since its initial release on LP, until the present digital age of CD. This new audio version feature newly remastered DSD master.
ESOTERIC equipment used for re-mastering
The criterion of re-mastering is to faithfully capture the quality of the original master tapes. ESOTERIC’s flag ship D/A converters, model D-01VU, Rubidium master clock generator model G-0Rb and ESOTERIC MEXCEL interconnect cables and power cords, were all used for this re-mastering session. This combination of highly advanced technology greatly contributed to capturing the high quality sound of the original master tapes.

Performance: Sonics:
One of the great Brahms Violin Concerto recordings. Not from the stately Brahmsian school, but a real technical tour de force to challenge Heifetz and Reiner. The Esoteric transfer compares very favorably to the original British and German LPs; I don't have a CD version. Very decent sound, but not world-beating (the 4.5 stars is in comparison to the originals; overall, more like 3.5). Not one of the great Esoteric transfers (see my comments on the Klemperer Das Lied Von Der Erde), but worth the price to me.

Expensive, and worth every cent. Yes, there is some congestion in the climaxes, but that is on the master tapes. I have owned and loved this performance in every media incarnation, including a DMM LP pressing on Electrola. Still, this is one of the great performances of the Brahms Violin Concerto and Esoteric has gotten the most out of the master tape. These performances were captured with minimalist miking, and the orchestral playing is nothing short of lovely and wonderful. Check the picture from the recording session in the disc (I also remember reading articles about the sessions by the producer in High Fidelity, 40 years ago)

Sheer Bliss. This is an exquisite piece of music recorded superbly. It was pricey and worth every cent. From the moment I put it on, I was electrified and carried away to my own private performance of the Brahms concerto in D. My partner, not an sacd enthusiast, was also impressed. Having heard this piece performed live and owning the pentatone version by Fischer, this version is very worthy. The violin is up front and clear with all the nuances of the soloist right in front of you. It is quite dazzling. I am a fan of the Esoteric label but this is a stand out recording compared to the rest of their catalog. I am not a classical musician and as such will refrain from commenting on the interpretation of the performance, but the sonics are excellent. If you can afford it and like the concerto I thoroughly recommend this disc. Reviewed in 2 channel stereo.
