Cantafabule (1975) is the latest album before most of the group members run away (1977) from the more and more opressing regime (only Mircea Baniciu - Lead Vocal + Guitar - stayed). Starting with "Invocatie" and ending with "Pasarea Phoenix" this is a concept album, where themes and ideas have a common thread. Outstanding vocals, great guitar solos (Nicolae Covaci - in the Jimmy Page league), rare bass (Josef Kappl - as, maybe, only Chris Square comes close), precise, though imaginative drums (Ovidiu Lipan Tandarica - worth listening with close attention if you enjoy Bill Brufford), sensitive also powerful moog-synthesizer (Gunther Reninger - unique in his interpretations - see "Zoomahia") and the enthusiastic, warm and manly voice, combined with the acustic guitar harmony (Mircea Baniciu - fantastic "front stage man" having the show exploding on all their concerts).... Inspired from Romanian ancient music, but evolved into a true prog rock opera, the whole album shines from one end to the other. Every piece is well refined, detailed, and executed with outstanding musical precision and artistic sensitivity. This album is definately a must in every Prog Rock collection. I put this album on the same shelf with King Crimson's "Red", Jethro Tull's "Aqualung", Genesis' "Foxtrot", Gentle Giant's "Octopus", Yes' "Close to the Edge", Pink Floyd's "Wish You Were Here", Led Zeppellin's "Houses of the Holly". This is a great album ! The words should be translated somehow into English, because the music is really fantastic. Invocatie is an introductory piece but of such a complexity, including a poem said, with music in background, that makes you really think:] "Fie sa renasca numai cel ce har Are de-a renaste Curatit prin jar Din cenusa-i proprie di sin propriu-i scrum Astazi, ca si maine Pururi si acum" Meaning, as I tried to translate it: "To be reborn only the one that has the mistic talent Has to reborn From his own ashes and dead fire Today, the same as tomorrow For ever and right now" This first long piece could stand together with Shine on you ... Second track goes into the ancient French language about the Unicorn story Third track is the Luck of the Beetle, the only close to rock and roll style giving a fresh breath relief and preparing for the next. The fourth track is about the dolphin, our good friend, and it is a unique song going between balad and progressive-folk Fifth track is deeply inspired from the ancient romanian and european stories about killing the dragon a progressive-hard rock gem Sixth track is a short sweet song, full of athmosphere stating the surprising friend of the yard snake Seventh song is the Calandrinon bird which is the one watching you on your death bed.. great great song Eighth song is another hard rock progressive piece dynamic as the fight between the prince Filip and the moose Nineth song is a great sophisticated piece as the characters in it the mangusta and the viper in their challenge with each other Tenth song is a sweet and bitter love song, like a cry for love of a mermaid The eleventh song is the rock and roll bird and it is coming like a relief after several heavy progressive-folk pieces The twelvth song is maybe the masterpiece of this masterpiece album; it is sung in Macedo-romanian dialect and it is about the final song of the hawk, which is said to announce the death of somebody loved... incredible song The thirteenth song is a mastery of synthsizer and electronic instrumental and comes quite before the end of this unblievable double album.. it means the war of the beasts The last song is the hymn of the Phoenix bird which is known to revive from its own ashes, fantastic piece of music full of sensitivity and making you wish that this great album didn't end. I cannot say only that this is rare music, sensitive and full of energy in the same time. The instruments and voices are crafted to perfection. This group rocks !

The band is born in 1962 at the Second Medium School from Timisoara and is initially called SFINTII. After a year the name is changed into PHOENIX. They were singing “international hits” of that time, including songs from BEATLES, THE SHADOWS, ROLLING STONES, ANIMALS, and MONKEES. Between 1964 and 1966 they sang at the cantina of the Medicine University from Timisoara, gaining experience and popularity. In 1965 they record their first song at the Radio: “Stiu ca ma iubesti si tu”. Soon after that, two songs inspired from the folklore would follow: “Padure”, “Bun ii vinul ghiurghiuliu” The band at that time was composed of: Nicolae COVACI (born 1947) - lead guitar, vocals, composer Florin (Moni) BORDEIANU (born 1948) - lead vocals, composer Claudiu ROTARU (born 1950) - guitar, vocals Bela KAMOCSA (born 1945) - bass guitar Ioan (Pilu) STEFANOVICI (born 1946) - drums The first big tour takes place in 1967. Their first big success comes in 1968, at the National festival of student?s art from Iasi, where, against of a valuable competition (Rosu si Negru, Mondial, Sideral, Coral) they receive the Big Prize of the festival, the Electrecord prize and the RTV?s special price for composition and performing. Immediately after the festival they record in the Electrecord studios their first EP from the “beat” series which includes: Vremuri, Canarul, Lady Madonna and Friday on my mind (the last two at the Electrecord?s insistences to have two “hits” to ensure the sale of the disk). The disk is sold out in a few days and the biggest hit is Vremuri. Also, in 1968 they work with the State theatre from Timisoara in staging the first Romanian rock opera: “Omul 36/80”. In 1969 Pilu Stefanovici is replaced at drums with Dorel Vintila ZAHARIA (born 1943), ex Cometele. Gunter REININGER (born 1950) - piano, organ. Also joins the band The director Manole Marcus uses their music in the movie “Canarul si Viscolul”. The band appears for a few seconds in the movie. Also in 1969 their second EP appears. In May 1970 Moni Bordeianu leaves the band to emigrate in USA. The band dissolves, to reunite in a new formula, with Zoltan KOVACS - bass guitar (ex Clasic XX), Cornel LIUBA - drums and Laurentiu BUTOI - flute, bagpipe, along Nicu Covaci and Gunter Reininger. Their style changes, using more and more the archaic folklore to obtain a specific sound for the Romanian rock. The band participates at the second edition of the Club A rock festival, in may 1971. Costitution: Nicolae Covaci (born 1947) - lead guitar, vocals, composer Mircea BANICIU (born 1950) - lead vocals, guitar Iosif KAPPL (born 1950) - bass guitar, violin, flute, vocals. Ex Color (Petrosani), Clasic XX (TM) Gunter REININGER (born 1950) - piano, organ Costin PETRESCU (born 1949) - drums. Ex Olimpic ‘64 (Buc.) The band prepares a rock opera inspired from the folklore, named “Cei ce ne-au dat nume”. For this project, Valeriu SEPI (born 1947) - drums joins the band. He comes with some ideas to improve the show using traditional masks and traditional instruments. The band presents the show successfully in the tours throughout the country in 1972-1973. In 1972 is released the first LP from a Romanian band, containing fragments from the rock opera “Cei ce ne-au dat nume” (“the selection” is made by Electrecord), the ballad “Negru voda” and “Nunta”. After the success with this LP, the band is invited at the festivals “The golden lira” (April 1973, Bratislava, Czechoslovakia), “Festival of the disk” (October 1973, Sopot, Poland) as well as in tours in Hungary and Yugoslavia. On November 19th 1973 at the Sala Palatului a concert Sfinx + Phoenix takes place, with an audience of approximately 3000 spectators. In this show are presented for the first time (in Bucharest) new songs like “Andrii Popa”, “Mica Tiganiada”, songs which will be part of their second LP, “Mugur de fluier” (introduction to a concert about the old Romanian music). The album appears in 1974. In1974, Costin Petrescu is replaced by Ovidiu Lipan (born 1953, also known as Tandarica) - drums, percussion. In the winter 1974-1975, they work on a new show and album. Initially called Zoosophia, it will later become “Cantafabule” (on the cover of the Electrecord?s double album there will wrongfully write Cantofabule). After long “debates” with the Council of culture the album will appear in 1975. For the next 3 years the band goes on tour throughout the country. In 1975, at the director Sergiu Nicolaescu request, they compose the music for the movie Nemuritorii. In 1975 the band has a unique concert on the ruins of the Sarmisegetusa fortress with a group of drummers (dubasi) from the village Faget. In 1977, after the earthquake from march 4th, the band participates in the campaign to help the victims, performing, among other places, on Campia Libertatii from Alba Iulia After a series of concerts throughout the country (with full stadiums), the members of the band “disappear”. Hidden in the Marshall speakers of their sound system they run out of the country (except Mircea Baniciu, who didn?t show up), and they go to RFG. In 1979 Moni Bordeianu and the violinist Mani NEUMANN join the band. In 1981, Nicu Covaci releases a new album under the name “TRANSSYLVANIA PHOENIX” with Ovidiu Lipan, the only member from the old band, Ivan KOPILOVICI, Mani NEUMANN, Tom BUGGIE. The band keeps the name to distinguish themselves from the hundreds of other Phoenix products. 1980, PHOENIX is awarded the “DEUTSCHE PHONOAKADEMIE” prize. 1983, Nicu Covaci sings in a duet with Dzidek Marcinkiewicz In 1986 Nicolae Covaci and Erland Krauser are working to stage Loyd Weber?s “Evita”, at the theatre from Osnabruck. After the unexpected success, in 1987, the theatre asks Covaci to participate in staging the operetta “Jesus Christ Superstar”, which had a tremendous success. In the mid 80?s is released the single “Ballade for you” / “The Lark” (1987), as well as the single “Tuareg” / “Mr.G`s promises”(1988). 1988 the band gathers one more time around Covaci and concerts in Germany. In december1989 the “Hyde Park” concert, dedicated to the Romanian revolution, takes place in Osnabruck. May 1990 Covaci meets the Romanian public after a 13 years absence, attending a festival held at the “Children?s Palace”, where he sang only with M. Baniciu a few known old songs. Surprisingly all the audience, where most where born after the band has left the country, sings with the two, proving they know all the lyrics, word by word. The next day a concert held by friends takes place. In the same year PHOENIX sings at Paris in “La cigalle” and prepares the first tour in Romania with the same composition as in the 70?s. They record in the formula: Covaci, Baniciu, Kappl, Neumann and Lipan. Starting with 1991 PHOENIX concerts as well in Romania as in various countries in Eastern and Western Europe. 1992 Covaci produces an artistically high ranked record implying the well known Romanian choir “Song” and the Radio Bucharest Symphonic Orchestra, disc entitled “Symphoenix”. At that time the members were: Nicolae Covaci - lead guitar, lead vocals Mircea BANICIU - lead vocals Volker VAESSEN - bass guitar Mani NEUMANN - violin Ovidiu LIPAN - drums 1993 the “Cantafabule” album is released. Starting with 1993 the band performs without Mircea BANICIU, at the concerts held in Bucharest (Sala Palatului) and in Timisoara he was replaced by Moni BORDEIANU and Dragos BADOI (former Directia 5). 1996, after signing a new contract with Electrecord, the “Vremuri - Anii 60”, “Cei ce ne-au dat nume” and “Mugur de fluier” appear on the market. 1997 “Aniversare 35” album is released. In the 1997 tour Mircea BANICIU joins the band, which had the following members: Nicolae Covaci - lead guitar, lead vocals Mircea BANICIU - lead vocals, harmonically guitar Iosef Kappl - bass guitar Mani NEUMANN - violin Ovidiu LIPAN - drums 1998 PHOENIX goes on a giant tour in major Romanian cities and they stage the “Cantafabule” album, using ballet, costumes, video and movie projections, highlighted by a huge sound and lights installation. 1999 a Maxi-CD containing 3 songs is released, the “Ora - Hora”. 2000 PHOENIX goes on tour in Romania and Germany, having a new and very controversial constitution: Nicolae COVACI - solo guitar, vocal Tavi COLEN - vocal, harmonically guitar Alin OPREA - bass Mani NEUMANN - violin Lucian CIOARGA - drums Volker VAESSEN - bass 2001 the new record, entitled “La umbra marelui urs”, is released, together with an English version “In the shadow of the big bear”, interpreted by the former “Black Sabbath” bassist, Malcolm J. Lewis. A presentation tour takes place in Germany, tour where Joachim DOLKER - drums joins the band. 2002; PHOENIX celebrates 40 years 2005 Baba Novak album is released
