YOSI LEVY - GUITARIST AND COMPOSER
Yosi Levy is a multifaceted acoustic and electric guitarist of exceptional range and depth. His latest album, “The Yosi Levy Acoustic Project,” was recorded live with two outstanding musicians: the Israeli flutist Ilan Salem and one of the greatest living Indian tabla players Bickram Ghosh. A longtime accompanist to sitar legend Ravi Shankar, Ghosh was honored by a composition written by Levy, “For Bickram,” that is included in the album.
Levy's Acoustic Project has been touring through India, China, USA and Israel in a spectrum of festivals and clubs. They will be performing in INDIA with flutist Itai Kriss and Kaushik Konwar in April 2015.
Levy also performs as a solo acoustic guitarist, fusing a fascinating breadth of jazz and baroque-style improvisation. His free movement between genres creates an exciting polyphonic texture and showcases Levy's capabilities as an unlimited creator. He has also produced strong electric playing, as can be heard on his “The House on Lefferts Boulevard,” featuring legendary jazz saxophonist Dave Liebman.
As a tireless performer, Levy has collaborated and performed with an expansive variety of musicians, including Jeff “Tain” Watts, Frank Gambale, Phil Woods, Jeff Berlin, Bob Gullotti, and Mordy Ferber. He has also played as guitarist with some Israel's greatest stars: Yoni Rechter, Yosi Banai, Ester Ofarim, Shem Tov Levy, Yair Dallal and many more.

Yosi Levy was born in Jaffa Israel. He started playing the guitar when he was 12 years old. He studied classical guitar with Menashe Bakish and jazz with Egon Kerten. Yosi received scholarships from the “Israel-America cultural foundation”. After military service in an army band Yosi started playing with leading jazz musicians in Israel such as: Roman Kuntzman, Peter Wertiemer, and Danny Gottfried to name a few. Yosi continued studying in New-York City in Mannes College of Music there he studied classical guitar with- Fred Hand. He also studied jazz with Jack Wilkins, Adolphe Sandole, and Charlie Banacos. In New York he recorded with the great Dave Liebman the album “The House on Lefferts Blvd” .The album was released in Israel on the - M.C.I. label and received great reviews.
Back in Israel Yosi formed groups of his own and was a member in other various bands. With them he performed in many festivals and clubs in Israel and around the world from “The Red Sea Jazz Festival”in Israel to “Jazz Yatra”in India. Yosi played with: Frank Gambale, Jeff “Tain” Watts, Kenny Werner, Jeff Berlin, Mordy Ferber, and Bob Gilloty and with Israeli artists-Gilad Atzmon in the group “Shpil” as well as with Alon Nadel in the group “Jazzeppelin”. He played with The Israeli Philharmonic Orchestra under the conducting of maestro Zubin Meta, maestro Daniel Birenbaum ,and maestro Mstislav Rostropovich. He also played and collaborated with leading Israeli singers and songwriters such as, Yoni Rechter, Shem Tov Levy, Yosi Banai, Ester Ofarim and Gidi Gov. Yosi formed a unique acoustic group called “The Yosi Levy AcousticProject” The group fuses modern jazz and ethnic Israeli music and includes Ilan Salem and recently Itai Kriss on flute and the great Indian tabla player Bikram Gosh who plays regularly with sitar maestro Ravi Shankar. The group performed over the years in India, Israel, and recently in Shangahi China with flautist Itai kriss and tabla player-kaushik konwar.
The “Project” released an album in a trio format (with-Ilan Salem and Bickram Ghosh) which is published independently and a new album in a duo format (with-Itai Kriss) and will be released in winter 2013.
In the last few years Yosi has also performed in a solo format with an acoustic and classical guitars playing modern jazz mixed with classical influences. Yosi is the head of the guitar department at the Berkley affiliated “Rimon School of Jazz and ContemporaryMusic”, and teaches at the “Jerusalem Academy of Music”.
