I first discovered the Pup's music in 2008 when I purchased their fine disc "The World Is Getting Smaller." I was really knocked out, not only by the compositions, arrangements and performances on that record, but by the balance of challenging musical ideas and fun accessibility (read groove). My only slight quibble was that it sounded a little sterile sonically. Their next release, "Bring Us The Bright," also had many fine moments and upped the ante sound-wise, but I never realized what was missing until the release of this 2010's "Tell Your Friends."
This is a live CD/DVD, beautifully recorded in the studio in front of a small audience, that successfully converts the excellent, tight, and exuberant performance of this group of 17(!) musicians into energized sonic feast that no amount of studio tweeking could supplant. The compositions, as adventurous and enticing as those found on any previous SP disc, come from several members of the band this time and cover a wide breadth of stylistic influences. But as stylistically and instrumentally varied as they may be, they sound cohesive. A testament to them being a real band and not a changeable collection of sidemen. The DVD is a wonderfully shot visual document of the session that includes bonus cuts, outtakes and some background by the group's leader, bassist, arranger and main composer - Michael League
As he says in the DVD, this was a huge undertaking and a huge risk, putting this together but the hope was that whatever ineffable quality was missing from their previous recordings could be achieved and successfully documented.
Mr. League and all of Snarky Puppy should rest assured - "Tell Your Friends" is home run.
