[SACD-R][OF] John Williams Plays Rodrigo and Villa-Lobos Guitar Concerti - English Chamber Orchestra, Daniel Barenboim, Sir Charles Groves - 1974/2003 (Classical Guitar)

John Williams, classical guitar virtuoso, is known for his wide-ranging approach to repertory, which includes appearances playing electric rock guitar and international music. John's father Leonard (Len) Williams was an accomplished guitarist who emigrated from Britain to Australia, married a Melbourne woman of Chinese-British descent, and was best known there for his jazz playing. As he taught John to play guitar, it soon became apparent that the boy was a gifted guitarist, and the family planned to move back to London so that he could pursue further studies. To afford the trip, Len Williams took an additional job as a hippo-keeper at the Melbourne Zoo.
They eventually moved to London in 1952. John performed at Conway Hall in London in 1955, making enough of an impression that the famous guitarist Andrés Segovia invited John to study at his courses at the Accademia Chigiana in Siena, Italy. John accepted and became a student of the pioneering guitar soloist from 1957 to 1959.
Williams made his official debut at London's Wigmore Hall in 1958, and received reviews that noted a strong, clean tone and a polished though undemonstrative technique. However, Williams does not give Segovia or his other official teachers a large share of the credit for his technique. He says that most of these teachers were too "authoritarian" in their approach, not excluding Segovia who, he says, had a tendency to expect his pupils to adopt his interpretive "mannerisms," and would get quite angry when they didn't. The guitarist with whom he formed the closest association is Julian Bream, a fellow student of Segovia. Bream has often appeared in concert and on recordings as a guitar duo with Williams.
Williams has toured throughout the world. He has performed and recorded nearly the entire standard guitar repertory, plus a large quantity of transcriptions. Several of these transcriptions are by his own hand. He was a professor of guitar at the Royal College of Music in London from 1960 to 1973. However, he also has a strong tendency to explore music outside the classical tradition. He does session work on film soundtracks, has arranged Beatles songs, and plays electric guitar in Sky, a classical-rock fusion band. He has also formed his own ensembles, John Williams and Friends and Attacca, to explore other music. On a CD release called The Guitarist, he uses Turkish and Greek rhythms and harmonies to support Medieval music. The 2002 album, The Magic Box, examines African music.

John Williams (the guitarist) performs possibly the best known works for guitar and orchestra by Rodrigo, the Conceirto de Aranjuez and the Fantasía Para Un Gentillhombre, along with the Concerto for Guitar and Small Orchestra by Brazilian composer Heitor Villa-Lobos. The orchestra is the English Chamber Orchestra, conducted by Daniel Barenboim in the concerti and Charles Groves in the Fantasía. These recordings are among the best-known versions of these pieces. Other versions on SACD are the Romeros on Mercury Living Presence.

The two Rodrigo guitar concertos here have been recorded many times by many performers. These recordings may have also been original made for possible quad LP release, because they date from l967 and 1974. The point is there were multi-track masters available to make this 5.0 mix. The affecting melodies of both Rodrigo works are familiar to many listeners. Miles Davis’ collaboration with Gil Evans included the slow movement of the Concierto. The Villa Lobos Concerto was commission by Andre Segovia, has the feeling of Brazilian folk music without actually quoting any, and in it the composer kept the orchestral backing balanced back so as not to interfere with the subtle solo acoustic guitar. The surrounds are used sparingly but turn them off and everything collapses to the front, so they clearly provide a more realistic concerthall experience. to go.

The John Williams SACD is a particularly welcome addition to the multi-channel catalog. The music itself is sure to please—the two Rodrigo works are audience favorites, superbly performed, but the real gem here is the Villa-Lobos written in 1951 at the suggestion of Andrés Segovia but unperformed for some years. The famed guitarist heard the composer’s Harp Concerto which includes a virtuoso cadenza and commented to Villa-Lobos that the Fantasia Concertante needed one. Villa-Lobos complied by writing a spectacular cadenza for the Fantasia which was then renamed Concerto for Guitar and Small Orchestra. What a delight it is! Of course all performances on this SACD are magnificent in every way. All of the recordings were made in London, the Rodrigo in1974 in London, the Villa-Lobos in 1967. I doubt they were originally made for multi-channel, but Richard King’s engineering for SACD is outstandingly natural with fine presence, performers in front, ambient sound from the rear. The entire CD is a delight.
