Private Revolution is the 1986 debut album by the British rock band World Party. At this point, singer-songwriter/multi-instrumentalist Karl Wallinger was the only member of World Party, and the only person pictured on the cover.

Wallinger is assisted on this album by several session musicians, including Anthony Thistlethwaite, Steve Wickham and Sinead O'Connor. Several other musicians listed in the credits are actually whimsically named pseudonyms for Wallinger himself.
All songs written by Karl Wallinger except "Dance of the Hoppy Lads," written by Wallinger with Stephen Wickham, and "All I Really Want to Do," written by Bob Dylan.

Goodbye Jumbo is the second album by World Party. Released in 1990, the album was essentially a solo project by Karl Wallinger, aided by a number of guest artists, including Sinead O'Connor and former members of The Waterboys. The album was voted Album of the Year by Q magazine in 1990. In 2000, Q placed it at number 94 in its list of the 100 Greatest British Albums Ever. It received a nomination for a Grammy Award for Best Alternative Music Album.

The single "Way Down Now" spent five weeks at number 1 on the Billboard Modern Rock chart. The follow-up "Put the Message in the Box" reached number 8.

The album's classic rock sound – guitar, bass and drums – was augmented by piano, strings, flute and electronic percussion. The songs followed the loose concept of an everyman's journey from lonely despair to spiritual fulfillment

Bang! is the third album by British group World Party. While previous World Party albums were essentially solo projects by one-man orchestra Karl Wallinger, for this album World Party officially became a three person group: Wallinger (vocals, keyboards, guitars, basses, etc.), Dave Catlin-Birch (guitars), and Chris Sharrock (drums). As well, the band is aided by a number of guest artists.
There is a hidden track towards the end of 'Give It All Away (Reprise)', entitled 'Surfing in Kuwait City' or, more simply, 'Kuwait City'. It is a satirical song and a pastiche in the style of the Beach Boys. It makes a social commentary on the 1991 Gulf War.

Egyptology is an album by World Party released in 1997, re-released in 2006. It contained the #31 British single "Beautiful Dream" and the award-winning She's the One, among other songs. But the album was not a commercial success, and Karl Wallinger was upset when his label, Chrysalis, used "She's the One" as a vehicle for pop artist Robbie Williams; Williams' version hit #1 on the British pop charts and won Williams several awards. Wallinger later wrote:

I was so lucky that Robbie recorded "She's the One" because it allowed me to keep going [after his aneurysm in 2000]. He nicked my pig and killed it but gave me enough bacon to live on for four years. He kept my kids in school and me in Seaview [Wallinger's recording studio] and for that I thank him.[2]

Due in part to the disagreement over "She's the One," Egyptology would be Wallinger's last album with Chrysalis; his 2000 album "Dumbing Up" was released on his own label.
Karl Wallinger: "All songs played recorded written produced by Karl Wallinger"
Chris Sharrock: drums, northern vibes
Johnson Somerset: loops on tracks 11 and 15
Anthony Thistlewaite: "additional massed saxes" on track 3
John Turnbull: guitar on track 12
The Swingle Singers: vocals on track 6

World Party first emerged in the mid-'80s after Karl Wallinger's departure from the Waterboys, and while it initially seemed like a side project, it would quickly take on a healthy life of its own, scoring hits that resonated just as much as those of Wallinger's former band. BEST IN SHOW looks back at some of World Party's most memorable moments, documenting the way he adapted his Beatles fixation to a more contemporary approach without sacrificing an ounce of melodic inspiration. From the apocalyptic "Ship of Fools" to the propulsive "Way Down Now," BEST IN SHOW hits all of World Party's high points.

The five-disc World Party box set announced last month will be released April 10 and comprised entirely of previously unreleased material: 70 never-before-heard tracks including new songs finished as recently as 2011 plus an “unheard history of rare studio gems, live sessions, concert recordings, radio interviews, covers, demos and B-sides.”

Dubbed Arkeology, the box set spans 25 years, and is packaged in what’s being called an “Any Year Diary,” 142-page day calendar designed for fans’ personal use. It includes rare photos, clips of news articles and World Party memorabilia and personal notes and commentary on the recordings from bandleader Karl Wallinger.

“The reason it’s all inside an any-year diary,” Wallinger says in a news release announcing the project, “is because I just got so sick of the CD packaging. I’m glad the whole CD format is dying, but I really didn’t want to put something out that was only digital.”

Among the new songs on Arkeology: “Waiting Such a Long Time” (2008), “Everybody’s Falling in Love” (2011) and “Photograph,” the latter described as a “sprawling piano anthem” recorded over 17 years (1994 to 2011). Other artifacts include demos recorded as early as 1985, “a pitch-shifted, effects-heavy rendition” of “What is Love All About” (from 1993’s Bang!) and live versions of familiar hits such as “Ship of Fools” recorded in Boulder, Colo., in 1998, and fan favorites including “Love Street” (from 1990?s Goodbye Jumbo) recorded at 2006’s Bonnaroo Festival.
World Party is a British pop/alternative rock band, which is essentially the solo project of its sole member, Karl Wallinger. He started the band in 1986 in London after leaving The Waterboys.

After a stint as musical director of a West End performance of The Rocky Horror Show, Wallinger joined a funk band dubbed The Out, before signing on with Mike Scott's Waterboys in 1984 to record the album A Pagan Place. After 1985's This Is the Sea, Wallinger departed to form World Party.

Recorded at Wallinger's home in 1986, his debut album Private Revolution yielded two minor hits in the UK, "Private Revolution" and "Ship of Fools". "Ship Of Fools", however, did much better outside the UK — it reached no. 4 in Australia, no. 21 in New Zealand, and no. 27 in the US, in the process becoming the act's only major international hit.

Between World Party's first and second albums, Wallinger aided Sinead O'Connor in recording her 1988 debut, The Lion and the Cobra. O'Connor, then an unknown, had appeared as a guest on World Party's first album. She would go on to appear as a guest on the second LP as well.

Goodbye Jumbo, World Party's second album, contained the minor UK hit singles "Way Down Now" and "Put the Message in the Box". Wallinger collaborated with fellow songwriter Guy Chambers on some of the tracks. Goodbye Jumbo was voted "album of the year" by Q magazine and was nominated for a Grammy Award for "best alternative music performance" in the US.

After the 1991 EP Thank You World (including a cover of The Beatles' "Happiness Is a Warm Gun"), Wallinger recruited guitarist David Catlin-Birch and ex-Icicle Works drummer Chris Sharrock as fully-fledged members for 1993's hit album Bang!. It reached no. 2 in the UK Albums Chart, with the track "Is It Like Today?" (no. 19 on the UK Singles Chart) also becoming a moderately successful single in Europe. The success of Bang! saw World Party in the line-up for the Glastonbury Festival.

In 1994, World Party recorded "When You Come Back to Me" for the Reality Bites soundtrack.

Their fourth album, Egyptology (1997), written following the death of Wallinger's mother, was commercially disastrous, although "She's the One" won an Ivor Novello Award and was subsequently recorded by Robbie Williams. Wallinger took a three-year break from World Party, before the release of Dumbing Up in 2000. However, in February 2001 he was struck down by an aneurysm that left him unable to speak.

After a long, five-year rehabilitation, in 2006 Wallinger re-emerged onto the scene. With his back catalogue reclaimed from EMI, a distribution deal was struck (via his own Seaview label) with Universal, and he played his first live show in a decade at the Austin, Texas-based South by Southwest festival. He played additional US dates in 2006. Big Blue Ball, a joint project with Peter Gabriel with production work by Stephen Hague (Pet Shop Boys, New Order) has also been released.

In September 2007, World Party supported Steely Dan in their first tour of Australia.

In 2011 the band returned to the South by Southwest festival to play a free concert in which they opened for Blue October. In 2012 World Party will release a new five CD collection of new songs, live recordings and cover versions. Titled "Arkeology".
Music

Wallinger cites influences such as The Beatles, Bob Dylan, The Beach Boys, Junior Walker, Neil Young and Prince. He sings and plays most of the instruments himself, using multi-tracking to create the studio sound. Lyrically, many of his songs feature thoughtful and occasionally political sentiments.
