Их не страшила эклектика и весьма вольное обращение с материалом, и как следствие, многие их начинания подготовили почву для грядущего наступления про-рока. Начала своё восхождени группа в Ричмонде в 1962 году, выступая в клубе Crawdaddy Club. Затем перебрались в Лондон в клуб The Marquee, где и записали свой первый альбом "Five Live Yardbirds". Но ещё до записи этого альбома группу покинул лидер-гитарист Anthony "Top" Topham, на место которого был взят Eric Clapton. На альбоме записывался Eric Clapton, но ходят слухи, что сохранился и материал наработанный для этого альбома с Anthony Topham. Первые два сингла 64-го года: "I Wish You Would" / "A Certain Girl" и "Good Morning Little Schoolgirl" / "I Ain't Got You" не прошли незамеченными, но истинную популярность группе принёс третий сингл "For Your Love" / "Got To Hurry", взлетевший в Англии на третье, а в Америке на шестое место. После записи первого альбома, недовольный менеджментом группы, группу покидает Clapton и перебирается в John Mayall's Bluesbreakers. В биографии Yardbirds наступил наиболее успешный период, в котором лидер-гитаристом стал Jeff Beck. В 1966 году группу покидает Paul Samwell-Smith и на его место приходит Jimmy Page. Записывается великолепнейшая вещь "Dazed And Confused", которую впоследствии с успехом исполняли Led Zeppelin.
