Five rockers make up the new band, Navasota-Rio, an offspring of Navasota – the 70’s rock band from Houston, Texas. Navasota had a “reputation for supercharged shows and dynamic musical ability” as the original ABC/Dunhill Records press release stated. And now Navasota-Rio not only follows in those footsteps, but takes the “supercharge” up a notch or two.
Lance Cardin is lead singer. With vocal delivery that puts his audience into the heart of the song, Lance can charm, chastise, and convince with deft delivery onstage. He is masterful when it comes to “live” performance, where the band lives and breathes! At the same time, he is a songwriter of great depth as demonstrated by his songs, “Restless,” “Long Cold Night” and “Texas Flood of Tears.”

Paul Minter was bassist for the original band, Navasota. Fortunate to come back from the battle fields of Vietnam in 1967, Paul’s rock ‘n roll career finally paid off for him when he formed Navasoto. With Navasota-Rio, Paul brings to the stage his bass guitar with the Roland synthesizer, whereby he adds melodic B-3 fills and other instrumentation.

Greg Stewart, drummer, was living in Austin when he first began with the band, but has come home to Houston as a permanent member of Navasota-Rio. With formal training, numerous awards and teaching experience under his belt, Greg has the talent and skill to perform like a veteran the music style that characterizes the band. His persona, as well as his percussion and drum skills, are a perfect fit.

Chris Monteverde, born in Tulsa, Oklahoma in 1983, grew up in Houston. Chris started playing guitar at age 7, with lessons from Ron Hudson, an amazing talent on classical and Spanish guitar. By age 13, rock ‘n roll had attracted Chris and he began writing. During high school and college Chris formed various projects: Jabberwalkie enjoyed a brief, although powerful stint on the Austin scene, followed by Lies A Bloom, lasting for two and a half years. As Chris says, “After years of hunting for the right group of people to share my dreams with, I have found them in Navasota-Rio.” And Navasota-Rio is indeed, privileged to bring Chris’ exceptional guitar, songwriting and vocal talents to their stage.

Matt Johnson, who was born in LaPorte, Texas, has been an avid student of music since ten years of age. While Matt is a veteran of the Houston music scene, and formally trained in various styles of music, his guitar playing is signature. Influences? Robben Ford, Danny Gatton and Eric Johnson. Matt is also a gifted songwriter and vocalist, and his performance adds tremendous dimension to Navasota-Rio.

The band’s first full-length recording, simply titled “Navasota-Rio,” contains ten original tunes – all of which have garnered fan approval for the past three years when played at various motorcycle rallies and festivals throughout Texas, Louisiana, Arkansas, Oklahoma, Pennsylvania and West Virginia.
