A 20-track set that’d be more accurately titled It’s Father’s Day: Have a(nother) Jimi Hendrix Best-Of, Fire is the kind of cash-in release that adds nothing to the legacy of the artist in question, but nevertheless comprises a succinct introduction to a singular, inimitable talent for anyone who, incredulously, owns none of this material already.

With no shortage of similarly pitched compilations available and posthumous discs aplenty filling store shelves, the long-term Hendrix fan isn’t going to need Fire in their life. But should they (assuming “they” is male) be given this on Father’s Day, it’s sure to find its place – most likely in the car, where a short-but-sweet serving of this maverick talent caught (mostly) in his prime will colour otherwise dreary commutes. Collectors hoping for any insightful liner notes will be disappointed, as basic credits aside this package presents no information on the songs – although it does indicate from what long-player each selection is taken, which may be of interest to absolute beginners. Although if it’s a shortcut you’re after: you can’t go wrong with any of the three studio records released before the artist’s death in 1970.

The quality of its material dictates that Fire is not a bad release, per se – but it is entirely needless. And there’s no Star-Spangled Banner here, an unbelievable omission given how Hendrix’s improvised performance of the US national anthem at Woodstock signalled the end of the 1960s in a style that’s been burned into the memories of all who witnessed it ever since. It was a pivotal moment in the man’s career, and its absence is startling. That recording does feature on the older Experience Hendrix best-of, which for this writer’s money is the best of its breed. Additionally, the inclusion here of four tracks from the recently released Valleys of Neptune album, compiled from his final studio recordings, represents poor value for money for anyone whose Hendrix journey began with said release.

But ultimately Fire is what it is – a cheaply put together, cynically timed compilation that doesn’t pretend to be a significant release in the continuing history of one of the greatest guitarists the pop world has ever seen. Should it come your way via your beloved offspring later this month, you won’t be let down by its contents – but you certainly would not have gone looking for them of your own volition.

What's it all about?

Yet another greatest hits collection of Mr Hendrix's material, comprising a mixture of classic tracks and some which casual fans may not have heard, including songs from the recent Valleys of Neptune album.

The new album ties nicely in with Father's Day and also the use of the song Fire in ITV's World Cup promotion in the last few weeks, which is likely to have entered the ears of more or less every single person in the UK at some point.

Who's it by?

A little-known chap by the name of Jimi Hendrix. Widely considered to be the greatest and most influential guitarist in history, the man's legacy lives on due to his timeless melodies and unequalled prowess on the fret.

Born Johnny Allen Hendrix in Seattle, Washington in 1942, the young man would soon be renamed James Marshall Hendrix and then ultimately adopt the moniker Jimi after acquiring his first guitar at the age of 15.

Thousands of hours of practice and the knowledge of friends and associates combined to create the complete package, as far as rock guitarists are concerned, helping Hendrix develop into a showman who could play like nobody else on the planet. He also enjoyed significant success with bassist Noel Redding and drummer Mitch Mitchell as part of the Jimi Hendrix Experience.

His tragic death in September 1970 only served to cement his legacy and paved the way for countless compilations featuring his timeless riffs and electric presence, of which this album is one.

So is it any good?

Of course, it's Jimi Hendrix. A better question would be whether it is necessary, which may warrant a different answer entirely.

There is no question that the material on the 20-track disc is of the very highest quality, with a wide range of the great man's songs included and sure to have those who buy it singing along and playing air guitar with whatever they have to hand. However, this fact alone highlights why many have deemed the release to be a cynical cash-in - we've literally heard it all before.

This is not the first Jimi Hendrix compilation. Or the second. Or the 27th. By my count, this is the 28th compilation album released since Hendrix's untimely death in 1970. And while the track listing differs from previous iterations, there is nothing new here for those who already own comprehensive Hendrix greatest hits packages such as 2001's 30-track Voodoo Child: The Jimi Hendrix Collection. The four tracks which featured on the recently-released Valleys of Neptune album are likely to be of interest, but true Hendrix fans will probably have picked that release up anyway.

However, let's not be too cynical. For the uninitiated, what's on here is very good indeed - Hendrix's body of work is incredible considering his cruelly short career, and this album starts with a bang as the iconic chords of Purple Haze ring out.

Indeed, the first half of the album contains arguably the most famous of the guitarist's songs. Despite every track being over 40 years old, it is remarkable how fresh they all feel, with 90 per cent of modern day guitarists probably being willing to give their right arm (or both) to reproduce the invention and technical skill demonstrated by Hendrix here.

Much has been made of the compilation being released so close to Father's Day, and there is no doubt that plenty of dads will be unwrapping the CD on June 20th, but the demographic most likely to benefit from the album is actually the offspring who will be buying it.

This is the ideal introduction to Hendrix, with the man's soulful warble on Hey Joe proving to be the definitive recording of the song about a man going on the run after shooting his wife.

The Hendrix-penned Crosstown Traffic is a short and upbeat track demonstrating the guitarist at his effervescent best, contrasting sharply with the above, while Valleys of Neptune perhaps best represents the artist himself - incomplete, yet undoubtedly stylish and immediately gratifying.

So, will long-time Hendrix fans willingly invest in this? It's unlikely - there's simply not enough new material here, and for those who own the recent Valleys of Neptune album, there's nothing whatsoever that's new.

However, as an introduction to his outstanding body of work, its consistent quality and innovation cannot be denied. It loses three marks for being yet another compilation, but newcomers can comfortably add those back on to the score.
