FROM WWW.METAL-INVADER.COM
:

DARK FOREST is a common name for metal bands, there are around 6 or 7 with that. Our guys come from the UK and if I tell you that Christian Horton (vocals/guitars) is also playing guitar in Cloven Hoof you might get excited. In any case you have to have some intimacy with the ‘true’ scene in order to enjoy those lads. The band was formed in 2002 with the intention to play classic heavy metal Iron Maiden style. Their lyrical themes are based around folklore and legends and their style is the typical retro 80’s stuff.
With this kind of bands you know what is happening. Those who seek perfection and consider a crystal clear production the minimum to ask from a band nowadays will pass easily. Those who are stuck in the glorious decade of our music will discover the strength and the originality they are craving for. And yes, the music is Iron Maiden (and NWOBHM in general) influenced enough to be appreciated. Their style is all over the place, although less polished and more to the roots. I mean deep English roots, like rooted to the ancient Celtic forests, cause this is the feeling DARK FOREST want to give through their music. “The Wreckin Giant” is the perfect token of their intention with its acoustic parts and the sweet melodies that are carried along with a polemic rhythm section. Titles like “Fight For Metal”, “Excalibur” and “Pipes Of Pan” should erase any possible doubt about the band’s direction. Pure heavy metal with a folklore dimension, always classic, always underground. If only you can put up with the somehow thin vocals and the weak sound (not playing) of the drums. But isn’t that a part of the scenario or what?
I have to admit the album has some moments (mostly due to the fierce and raw guitarwork) that made me searching for my horse in order to invade Kamelot, yet at times it became too much. Metallers with spikes, leathers and old high heel athletic shoes I am sure will be more enthusiastic than me.

FROM WWW.METALCDRATINGS.COM:
With a name like Dark Forest, you’d perhaps expect to hear the work of a teenager in Wisconsin screeching the glories of the Scandinavian wilderness from his mum’s garage on a pirated copy of Cubase. What you actually get is a CD unrelentingly traditional at heart, the debut of a young band of purists from the birthplace of heavy metal in the Midlands, and in environment where anything with a solo lasting more than 10 seconds or a set of lyrics relating to Vikings is being described as ‘old-school’, it is deeply welcome and reassuring to hear something so genuinely and intentionally old-fashioned.
Not quite a full-blown retro act like Swedish adrenaline junkies Enforcer, Dark Forest nevertheless draw their greatest body of influence from 1985 and before, filtering out the hard rock influence that permeated the work of most bands of the time to create a streamlined, razor-sharp interpretation of traditional power metal. Site overlord Clint made a comparison to Wolf in a recent conversation we had about the band, and it is a valid one as Dark Forest put a similar, slightly dark twist on the usual catalogue of influences and their songs bristle with the same modern technical prowess.

In this regard, the lead guitar playing is quite superb, effortlessly flashy without being overly extravagant and is a real selling point for the CD as a whole. The instrumental track “Hollow hills” is a real feast for the ears, a series of exquisite lead parts culminating in a joyous outburst of a solo. As if used as a point of contrast to this, the solos on “Pipes of pan” are played by Witchfinder General guitarist Phil Cope. It makes for slightly unusual listening as the veteran’s usual scuzzy Iommitations sound a little out of place in the midst of the galloping rhythms, but it offers an alternative to the more clinical playing found on the rest of the songs, and in any case after the 2nd solo the song really kicks it up a gear and finishes on an exhilarating high.

Through nothing more than the fleeting use of acoustic guitars and some neatly crafted melodies, the CD is also shrouded in a subtly medieval vibe that fits the oh-so-very-English lyrical themes like a steel glove. It is something I can’t remember hearing executed so cannily in traditional metal anywhere but on Tredegar’s 1986 debut, which has similar themes of wizardry, historical battles and myths wrapped in an ethereal days-of-yore atmosphere that just hovers on the edge of perceptibility.

Just as things are drawing to a close though, they throw the listener for a loop with a jump into Manowar lyrical territory on the last 2 songs. “Fight for metal” does exactly what it says on the tin, while “Dark Forest” is the obligatory tongue-in-cheek “we’re the best” title song that finishes the CD on a mischievous note.

The only possible sticking points for some listeners that I could foresee are the recording quality and the vocals of Christian Horton. Not to do a disservice to either, which are more than acceptable, but audiophiles must be warned that if they don’t settle for less than pitch-perfect then this is not going to be the CD for them. The compressed production is understandable – one of only a few releases to date by the indie label Eyes Like Snow, the recording was presumably self-financed – and in reality the only thing to suffer badly are the drums, which are plagued by that irritating tinny sound on the bass drums and cymbals.

Horton’s performance is a little more puzzling, given that at times he sounds commanding and completely confident in his abilities – not least the banshee screams on the opening track – while at others it sounds as though he is holding back and the verses become ever so slightly muddled. But then again, how many NWOBHM bands can be said to have had perfect vocalists? Horton’s voice has the same raw charisma to it as the likes of Angel Witch’s Kevin Heybourne, and adds a certain charm to the music. He is also assisted by some strong backing vocals from drummer Adam Sidaway (who also puts in a terrific shift behind the kit) which help him through some of the tougher moments, and overall his performance should be solid enough to convince all but the most pernickety.

For all the history involved in being the original home of heavy metal, the U.K. has a real dearth of quality traditional metal bands these days, with a lack of interest in anything but varying passing trends (both good and bad) forcing even the most promising bands into years of hard struggle to make any sort of breakthrough. Dark Forest have got their chance now a few years into their career with a this CD, and while it’s not going to have EMI knocking down their door, it would be nice to see a band of their quality from round these parts finally getting a shot at the big stage. Warts and all, this is a superb debut, and it definitely merits your attention.

FROM WWW.APOCHS.NET:
Dark Forest is a United Kingdom based old-school Heavy/Power Metal act that formed back in 2002. Since then the band has issued three EPs and their self-titled debut full-length. Two of those EPs were self-released, but the full-length and following EP varied in labels. Again we find Dark Forest residing on a different label, having found a home with Cruz Del Sur Music for the time being for their follow-up full-length effort, Dawn of Infinity. But, will this release be enough to find the band having a long-term, or is it just another old-school band in a barrell full of immitators?
The band actually has a lot working for them. Between their obvious appreciation for early NWOBHM with a bit of a more Power Metal push to it, and having an audio quality that captures that spirit and sound of the style's glory days. Dawn of Infinity feels more on the analog side, capturing the early to mid eighties sound nicely you'd expect to hear from legends of the time such as Iron Maiden and Judas Priest, and it works very well with their influence from the first of those two bands in their material. The guitars here have that vintage distortion sound that is a bit of a higher pitch but comes off glorious and when used properly can set an epic atmosphere to the song from any band that knows how to use it well. The bass is loud in the mix as well, and used as an additional layer that really carries the beat well on it's own without forcing it to simply accompany the guitars with a deeper sound, especially since it ends up being a little lighter then deep. The drums here sound fantastic with echoing loud and natural snares coming through with a nice level on the cymbols so they come through more as an accompanying part of the kit then dominating so that the snares and the kicks that have a slight kick to them that work perfectly against the louder guitars to still give the thudding bass presence if the click itself comes off drowned out. It's the perfect mixture musically, and is nicely backed up with clean singing that feels slightly restricted, but perfectly suits the music with it's slightly nasal approach mixing the aforemention Iron Maiden with perhaps a toned down Candlemass that can hit some higher falsetto notes. This band has every right to claim themselves to be vintage, classic, or even true (in the eyes of elitists) Heavy Metal, and it sounds amazing.

The second you press play on Dawn of Infinity and "Hourglass" kicks in with it's early NWOBHM style riffs with a Power Metal melody, you're immediately taken back to the vintage days of vinyl with it's epic Heavy Metal sound that is undeniably catchy and moving for any fan of the style's earliest days. The song never lets up with it's solid hooks and rhythms that come through with a grand scale of attitude, meshing nicely with the beautiful, more melodic chorus and deeper vocal performance that compliments it perfectly to the point where you instinctively want to throw your fists in the air and immediately start singing along with the simple lyrics of the chorus or it's harmonized semi-gang chants. "Light Years On" definitely doesn't feel as grand or epic, but takes a faster approach with a strong Power Metal foundation, but the mixture of that and the throwback Heavy Metal riffs and attitude that still linger are enough to keep the buzz going for quite some time, whipping you into a frenzy with the galloping bass kicks and smooth transitions between paces of the song with a grand sounding chorus that is equally as powerful to the rest of the song.

It's almost impossible from this point to even consider falling out of the classic Heavy Metal rush you'll find yourself in. Well, at least right away that is. Dawn of Infinity has a long list of superb tracks throughout the entire album and it tends to get a little hard to pick out which ones are greater then others. There's nothing really negative to say about the material here either, though some problems can be spotted. "Seize the Day" is a decent song, but takes too long to build up and stays restrained for too long, making it a little more bland then it really ends up being. On later listens it becomes obvious what the band's intention was as far as that slow building approach is, but you still can't help but feel the music leading up to that richer conclusion isn't strong enough to support it the way that it is. And, from here, the material kind of follows a more traditional Heavy Metal approach that tries to weave an epic experience, but often without building up to anything. "The Tor" ends up being in here, especially given it's eight minute track length. The band's goal with this track is clear, but it never seems to reach that grandiose pinnacle that they seem to strive for, but instead just really comes up with an alright Heavy Metal song that's nothing too special in the long run, but still a good effort none the less.

Really, Dark Forest seems to be at their best when the music is a little more energetic, which is proven well with the songs that follow "The Tor." These tracks actually take on a bit of a common Hard Rock influence that would be typical to mainstream stations at the time, such as "The Stars My Destination" which still has that epic Heavy Metal push to it, but at the same time seems to take on a slight Glam or Hair Rock influence to it that makes it a little more accessible and, for the time outlined earlier, would be a little more mainstream. But this doesn't paint the band in a bad light at all as the song is still enjoyable on a more melodic aspect, but still is not make as strong an impact as "Hourglass" and the other openning tracks do sadly. "Black Delta" does a good job of going back up to that epic scale, and still makes for a fantastic track that's more Power Metal heavy, though doesn't quite make the same impact.

Dawn of Infinity is honestly a strong album despite some of the songs that make less of an impact. The talent to capture the spirit and energy of the classic Metal sound is there, and cannot be denied. The only fault really was they tried their hand at too many different approaches to this style, which led up to the album's slight downfall. The first three tracks here are fantastic and any fan of Heavy Metal or Power Metal is going to simply love them and come back to them repeatedly. However, the remainder is hit and miss due to some blander tracks, as well as good tracks that just don't quite live up to the start of the release but well worth checking out either way. Dark Forest is definitely a group to keep your eye on, and if this album is any indication towards what their progression is going to be like for future recordings, Cruz Del Sur may find it wise to keep them on tab before a bigger label swoops in and grabs them.

FROM WWW.METALCRYPT.COM:

This is a cool surprise from Cruz Del Sur, who have become one of the best labels for traditional Heavy Metal with bands like Atlantean Kodex and Slough Feg on their roster. This is actually the second full-length for Dark Forest, a UK band who show tremendous potential.
This is just a solid, catchy Heavy Metal album. Dark Forest have a galloping, melodic riff style that of course recalls Maiden, but they have a direct and heavy touch that almost sounds like US Metal, bringing to mind bands like Steel Prophet as well as a touch of almost Hellenic True Metal like Lonewolf or Battleroar's first album. Standout songs include "The Tor" and the compulsively hooky "Stars My Destination". The playing is solid if not showy, and singer Will Lowry-Scott has a good voice, with enough power and range but without really delivering a standout performance. If this band has a failing, it's that there is nothing they do really extraordinarily well – they write good songs, play them well, and have a good production job, but they don't really wow with any one feature. Sometimes that's worth more to me than a hundred gimmicks.
