Mercury Rising are an early 90s-sounding prog metal band that seemed to have a buzz at the time of release but weren't able to sustain it. They were obviously influenced by Dream Theater's "Images And Words" and Fates Warning but not really close to being as technical as those bands.

Their debut album "Upon Deaf Ears" is a really enjoyable listening experience. Unlike the bulk of progressive metal, no one is going off on a tangent for its own sake. The whole band are executing their arrangements in lock-step, even if they take unexpected turns at times. There are some uptempo double bass/speedy parts but they are interspersed in a more melodic/progressive framework. Although this album may appeal to fans of bands like Toxik or Flotsam & Jetsam because of its overall style, this album never gets that thrashy. The band is really just focused on creating interesting progressive metal that rocks. They have no inclination to venture off into jazz fusion territory or anything too bizarre.

The rhythm guitar parts are worked out well but aren't too technical. Melodic guitar work is the focus here, mixed with some chunky riffs, clean guitar arpeggios, and harmonized runs. The vocalist is quite good, recalling Ray Alder probably most of anyone. The vocalist does some high screams to punctuate certain parts of songs, never overdoing it. The vocal melodies and drum arrangements are all well-crafted.

The album's production is clear, not too overpowering, and not abrasive.

The lyrics seem to be well-written in their dealings with introspective topics.

I subtracted a few points over a few minor issues. First of all, let me be clear that I don't believe any album is perfect. I believe there is always room for improvement for musicians to strive for. My rating reflects that belief. There were a few high notes that I felt the vocalist could've hit a bit more solid. Also, I think a band that plays this type of metal could've benefitted from a bit more flash in the riffs. The album ends on the two weakest tracks, both are OK but neither is great and I skip them every time I spin this disc (unless I am listening to the album to review it). But the songs are very good overall and that is the most important thing.

I'm not sure where this album can be found nowadays but keep your eyes pealed on eBay.

Mercury Rising is a prog metal band from USA with two albums under the belt. This is second one from 1998 named "Building Rome". I must confess this was and is still after so many years after first listening a real surprise for me. A very strong and well crafted album, the musicianship is outstanding, the vocal parts are super, what else an album must have.

Taken their influences from Fates Warning ("Perfect Symmetry" era), Queensryche and even in places some Sieges Even elements are added, Mercury Rising release an album hard to forget if you are in this kind of music. Very talented band who for some reasons never made it in prog metal circles, it's a shame because this is one of the best prog metal album of the 90's for sure.

Well balanced album with a complex intrumental passages combined very well with outstanding vocal parts. I was simply blown away after I re-listen and re-discover this band after I've first listen the album when was released 11 years ago. Simply amazing, how is possible such a band with so many qualities to become so unknown is beyond me.

Clarence Osborne vocal parts are simply amazing, not to mention the other musicians are top notch. This is almost forgotten treasure in prog metal world. All the pieces stands as very good to my ears, not a weak moment. "Cathedrals", the title track, "Moment Of Truth" are examples how great this band is, quite better than the previous one, with a lot to offer.

I highly recommended this band and specially this "Building Rome" album, they deserve a better view for sure. It's sad that they are so unknown and they disbanded a year after this relese, if you are a prog metal fan try this album worth every second. Almost a masterpiece of prog metal, an excellent album to have in your collection.

Fortunately people from Arkeyn Steel Records believe the same so the tape is grabbed, remastered and represented on CD format along with the band's unreleased 1991 demo and some live stuff that really captures the magic of this band. If you still missing the point about this excellent power/prog band you would better bring into your mind an adventurous mix of Lethal and Mystic Force brought to the front under catchy, powerful and outstanding riffs (that will also bring to your mind classics like Judas Priest and early Queensryche). Melodic lead themes brings even more force to the songs, however the real deal in here is the vocals that are indeed THE band's trademark. You can add the mystery that is spread through the band's composition as a very positive feature, yes Mercury Rising for sure can NOT be pointed as your everyday metal band, there is much to hear in their stuff, especially the early one.

This 1992 tape captured the raw force of band that really had the Power and Talent to deliver some storm-taking Metal. Same goes for the unreleased 1991 demo and the live tracks that are offered to you in this release that brings in the light of the day the band's early days.

I really enjoyed the fact that the CD has the original demo tape cover. Unreleased photos, complete bio and lyrics completes the puzzle.

Well in your quest for more power/prog steel Mercury Rising is a chapter sure worth to be examined. Give them a chance starting with this great CD.

Listening to the stuff of this Rosedale, Maryland, US based power/prog band I would think once again that a band got to be on the right place, on the right in order to catch the right chance and be really big, no talent is not enough. Yes Mercury Rising got all the talent and inspiration you can imagine but they remained stuck in the underground like many other bands that really deserved something more than a few demo tapes and some live shows on clubs. Mercury Rising were lucky enough to deliver two full length albums (second one on Noise Records) so we can accept that they have walked a small distance of a career path. Yes both albums are worth checking but if you ask my point the real peak of the band was their fantastic debut demo from 1992.
