One song. Two composers. Forty minutes. One hell of an album. For those of you that don’t mind five-sentence reviews, you can stop reading here. But, I’d urge you to press on if I had the power to do so other than by asserting myself in print. SEPIA DREAMER’s full-length – one song separated into eight parts – is nothing short of amazing and the fact that “Portraits Of Forgotten Memories” is an instrumental release lends itself an astounding amount of credibility.

Interestingly enough, Brokenshaw and Wrenninge were bold enough to touch on a variety of stylistic wanderings on “Portraits Of Forgotten Memories.” So, not only will the listener receive a melancholy, piano-laden beginning in “[Inwards] Critical Gaze,” but will also be blessed with blistering, MESHUGGAH-like intensity due in part to the spirited drumming. Lamentably, the one song isn’t split into eight, selectable tracks, which means – like me – you’ll probably want to listen to “Portraits Of Forgotten Memories” in its entirety, without break, or not at all. However, the alluring nature of the riffage and SEPIA DREAMER’s spell-casting abilities make this debut a shifty and magical ride into rarely explored territory. Instrumental bands are truly common, but can you think of one that tackles such a grandiose task right off the bat and succeeds? I can’t.

Hopefully, “The Sublime” – the follow-up to “Portraits Of Forgotten Memories” – will be yet another catalyst for satisfaction. After willingly dissecting the latter, my suspicions will probably be confirmed upon digesting “The Sublime.” But that’s enough talk of the future. SEPIA DREAMER are here and now.
