It was about time for our brothers from Cyprus to release a full length album. Those of us who have heard their first two demos were expecting this debut like very few other ones. I would only complain about the absence of the majestic ballad Destiny (put it in the next album, guys! Come on!).
Arryan is a type of flower that grows on the American continents, so Arryan Path is a path of flowers (taken from an interview the band once gave). Not many things are known about this band. Formed in the U.S.A., the band went through a lot of lineup changes. During that period they released two demo CDs, Return To Troy and Osiris. Their debut contains many songs from those two demos.
Arryan Path is one of those bands that you can't classify strictly as a Metal outfit. They are too majestic for that. Their base is Heavy Metal of course but only driven to write epic music, whatever that means. Led by a magnificent vocalist they add tons of influences to their songs. Some of you might find the excessive use of keyboards a bit annoying but try to keep in mind the band's bizarre profile. They're not the new Rhapsody after all (thank God for that one!). Songs like Osiris or Piri Reis are stunning, while Arryan Path and Ivorian are simply too damn good!
They could have had a better production but still this one is quite good. Now tell me how many cool bands you know from Cyprus? Give up? Arryan Path is probably the best act over there. Fans of Epic Metal the way Virgin Steele define will probably fall in love with this one!

You could quite misunderstand the name ARRYAN PATH. Has nothing to do with Nazi ideas though. Here we are dealing with a very interesting outfit from Cyprus that holds remarkable potential. You can tell this from this debut disc, too. Unfortunately not everything is 100% rounded off and completely thought-through. But principally this isn’t important for a completely untrendy Heroic Metal disc.
But yet some arrangements somewhat annoy me. Especially in terms of choruses the band should work on themselves a bit. I just can’t understand such an abysmal chorus as with the opener “Return To Troy”. It is beyond me why such a fault is tolerated and not extinguished. Especially when you listen to the diversity of ideas and to the other songs, that were created in attention to the details. Except for the really bad HELLOWEEN clone “Ivorian” that you have to stand in 2 (!) versions. Weird, these Metal freaks from Cyorus…For otherwise there’s really great Epic material to admire, which is drenched with pathos and pride, but which outstandingly underlines the disc’s concept. The antique/mystic sandal world of one Homer, that is, who is rather known to us due to countless monumental tomes such as Troy, Jason and the Argonauts or Clash of the Titans.
Bound to the folkloristic influence of their homeland and to the Metal of spiritual brothers like MANOWAR, VIRGIN STEELE or ADRAMELCH, a remarkable piece of music was born. An Epic operetta like “Osiris”, for example, is the best example of this band’s genius. Everything fits here: Starting with the arrangement to dramatism, choirs – insane! Hardly any clichй is shunned, but don’t we want it this way? ARRYAN PATH aren’t particularly heavy or hard, but majestic and ambitious. Often the keyboard is very dominant, which you could blame the band for. Some more focus on the axes and everyone would be content. But in return the band can offer a really neat singer…Admittedly, the music is a bit cheesy, but not sterile or even predictable by any means! Those who can generally appreciate Greek Metal or to whom RHAPSODY sound too overcharged can safely try this…

The basis this album will not sell enough to do justice to the music’s quality can only be the lack of distribution or each fan’s financial issues or don’t-know-what-else reasons (or our taste in Metal has dried a lot…haha, it’s just the devil in me). Not that the style ARRYAN PATH follows is the most commercial one in our days but "Terra Incognita" proves to be nothing less than an excellent Heavy/Power/Epic album destined to conquer CD players and car stereos and i-pods and again-don’t-know-what-else audio devices filling the hunger for some honest 80s-based Metal music away from trends and ’promo’ vibes. The band from Cyprus delivers one of the most prominent artistic Metal albums I’ve listened to in Mediterranean countries, hands down. Yes, quality Metal music is still around…it of course takes skills, hard work, loyalty and freedom of spirit & influence filtering.
Is "Terra Incognita" a Doom Metal album? It could possibly be: it is has enough slow-pace songs, with mourning vocals by the terrific voice of Nicholas Leptos plus low-key heavy guitars and you cannot escape bringing legends like SOLITUDE AETURNUS, mid-career CANDLEMASS or early TROUBLE to mind. And that’s where the story ends? Of course not.
Are we talkin’ then ’bout an epic Metal album? Yeap, it’s not out of the question, either. The reference to idols of the American 80s Metal scene – especially ’poetic’ JAG PANZER or first era of FATES WARNING or else the lyric side of RAINBOW/DIO – is imminent due to the majestic job done in the guitars section, the fabulous leads and the varying yet un-complex rhythm section, again bringing on the steel and cruel side of the vocal harmonies.
End of story, again? No. Classic Metal had always been – among others – affected by the rock of IRON MAIDEN’s legacy. There’s no single song resembling to another and the fact and only that this album’s opener clocks to 9 minutes without even noticing how easily time passed by means a lot for the composing skills of ARRYAN PATH. Expanding the verdict, 50 minutes roll on and you either feel five minutes have only gone by or you’ve co-instantaneously listened to a couple of 80s Metal albums (or more). So much variety in the music making, traditional/folk regional musical parts in the vocal harmonies…the symptoms of artistry.
So, the juvenile Metal fan gets nothing? Of course not. "Terra Incognita"’s ’ace’ mark is the wealth of melodies all over the album, and fans of European melodic Metal (possibly not the ’happy’ section of e.g. EDGUY) and even pomp Metal patriots bleeding to the galloping tempos of e.g. RHAPSODY will certainly feel comfortable with the exotic rhythms and harmonies of this really interesting album, leaving aside the fact ARRYAN PATH is a genuine go-between for current and more traditional Heavy Metal music.
The same-titled song, "Cassiopeia", "Minas Tirith", "Molon Lave", "Open Season", "Ishtar"…the whole album, to be honest., is a killer. If you do not feel familiar with many words in the numbers’ titles let’s note down they are Greek words. The band’s members also share credits in other Cypriot bands (DIPHTHERIA, PRODIGAL EARTH) and seems to have gained some good experience serving Metal music for many years now. The production bolsters such a finding since everything sounds crystal clear and surely portrays the class of a Metal band. Vagelis Maranis (from SANVOISEN, a brilliant technical/power Metal band from Germany with two albums in the mid-90s) handling some of the guitars on the album and lends his voice in one song.
ARRYAN PATH released two demos a decade ago, and their first album came out in 2004, the hopeful but quite mismatching "Road To Macedonia" CD. That’s of little interest though, since "Terra Incognita" is miles forth a magnificent CD. So much melody, an unexpected matching diversity, really excellent vocals and a powerful sound…really hope this album will make it. Looking forward to see ARRYAN PATH live at Greece’s Up The Hammers festival in early March, now.
P.S.: "Hoping to clear the controversy surrounding the band’s name once and for all, first and foremost Pitch Black Records has a zero tolerance on racism and is very firm on not collaborating with anyone lacking respect for different races and ethnicities. "Arryan" (double ’r’) is simply a type of flower and has nothing to do with "Aryan" and its associations with Nazism" - Press release.

**Power Metal Alert**
First and foremost, let's quickly address the sizable albino elephant in the room...
There apparently exists an "Arryan" (obviously white) flower on our planet, so we're ostensibly supposed to imagine a path flanked by fields of budding white blossoms when thinking about Arryan Path. Not exactly the kind of imagery ideally suited for a heavy metal band in the first place, so I question the need to forage forward with such a questionable moniker. I will say that if Greek Cypriote and vocalist/brainchild Nicholas Leptos ever expects to see this project get any true national recognition, he should think very seriously about a simple name change. And please, for the sake of us all, don't let there be some sort of equally unique flower in some rare botany tome called the "Heetler Rose."
Onward and upward...
I picture metal enthusiasts from Mediterranean island nations such as Cyprus being happily detached from the burdens of a scene that always seems to obsess over "pushing the genre forward." Perhaps it's not possible to make such a statement without coming across as a complete bastard, but I actually mean that as a compliment. One of my true life-goals is to spend at least a week amongst metal freaks who proudly sport an ancient look that includes denims adorned with bands such as Manilla Road, Cirith Ungol, Omen, Witchfynde, and Sortilége not because it's "hip and retro," but because their particular scene is enthusiastically frozen in time. It's of course very likely that Cyprus is every bit as consumed as the U.S. with pushing the heavy metal envelope, but it's bands and albums such as this that help paint the "Classic Headbanger's Eden" in my odd little mind.
Originally formed in the U.S. but quickly re-established on the Greek side of the fence in Cyprus, Nicholas Leptos' Arryan Path play a brand of epic heavy metal that's as far from anything I'd consider to be "modern sounding" as you could possibly get. Their closest active sibling would undoubtedly be Rhapsody with a pinch of Helloween for added spice. The former is definitely the closest connection, however, not only because of the amazing vocal similarities between Leptos and Fabio Lione, but also because both bands share a penchant for adding theatrical flare abundant with grandiose choruses, orchestration and added eccentric instrumentation. The formula delivered by these Cypriots is toned down by a convincing measure (likely because of money and studio constraints), but the end result is remarkably close to the "feel" also conveyed by their Italian counterparts.
Following a brief intro that brings to mind a scene featuring Gladiator Russ Crowe slowly sweeping wheat stalks with his fingertips, the 9-minute "Cassiopeia" gallops onto the stage and sets the formula for the rest of the album in steel: a sweeping, mostly mid-paced gait edged and sent to soaring heights with a ridiculously catchy chorus. From this point forward Terra Incognita maintains this course in spades, with tunes like the aggressive "Open Season," "Angel With No Destination" and (bonus track) "The Mind" upping the Helloween ante by adding a bit more speed. The title track and smoky "Ishtar" illuminate the band's Greek roots by seamlessly folding in Arabic instrumentation to their snaky stride, with "Terra Incognita" striking particularly hard because of a fantastic fist-pumping groove matched alongside Nicholas' repeated shouts of "let me hear you roar!" But as strong as these cuts stand on their own, the true strength of the record hits in the bottom half where the epic elements flash like a phoenix from a fiery grave -- the fantastic "The Blood Remains On the Believer" (incredibly catchy), for example, and the towering choruses that lift "Elegy" and the Tolkien inspired "Minas Tirith" to crowning heights.
Really the only weakness I found with Terra Incognita after spending a great deal of time with it the past two weeks is that some of the tunes rely too heavily on the contagious refrains. The otherwise excellent "Molon Lava," for example, and the self-titled track as well. But this relatively small gripe is honestly eclipsed by how hard all these tunes stick to the brain.
It may seem like overkill to some of our readers for me to spend so much effort dissecting an unknown album from a contestably monikered band in a genre seemingly scorned by many on this side of the pond, but I stand by the strength and ascending power behind Terra Incognita. If you're a fan of Rhapsody-styled epic power metal and have been itching for something new and inspiring, this just might be your ticket. I just hope Nicholas eventually changes the name so I don't have to spend any more time explaining his motives every time I try to recommend them to power metal fans.

Hindsight is a wonderful thing and looking back on it, I was possibly (probably!) a little too keen to bestow greatness on Cypriot Power Metal band Arryan Path in my review of their second album Terra Incognito. I do however still think it was a far above average and pleasingly stretching release, although subsequent listens have dulled its impact ever so slightly. What has also helped me come to this conclusion is that with album number three Ira Imperium, (which also finds the band adding an extra "a" to their name to avoid the over the top accusations of Nazi-isms – hence they are now Arrayan Path) this band have upped their game considerably, bringing a more mature, considered and eclectic outlook to their chest beating music.
Revolving round the Leptos brother, Nicholas on vocals and Socrates on guitar, Arrayan Path have taken quite a step forward with Ira Imperium, bringing an altogether more thought provoking approach to their already impressive aggressive style. This allows the band to stretch out their ideas and (possibly with an eye on how successful the likes of Myrath and Orphaned Land have been in recent times) to also bring themes and instrumentation to their sound that have more in common with traditional Cypriot music than it does Power Metal. Importantly though, they have also ensured that the album still has more than enough strident Metallic bombast to appeal to their core audience. Whilst Arrayan Path have neither the immediacy, nor overtly in your face keyboard style of the likes of Pagan's Mind, there are many parallels to be drawn between the two bands, with Arrayan Path also being able to blend punishing riffs, molten rhythms and full on vocals, with a more restrained, considered and almost commercial vibe. It is however "Kiss Of Kali" which finds this album bringing some musical influences from their homeland into this music, although they do celebrate their culture through the lyrics right across this album. Don't be frightened off though if it is something more straight ahead that you seek, with thundering drums leading the clarion call of guitar barrages across the rest of the album, although strings and Operatic vocals also make the odd appearance in some of the songs.

Ira Imperium is an album which should announce the arrival of Arrayan Path as a band capable of challenging the more celebrated acts in the Power Metal genre, both in terms of their ability to deliver completely convincing, atmospheric, yet heavy music and also with how well they add the complexity and drama that bands such as Therion do, with such skill. With bands like Arrayan Path, Myrath and to some extent Orphaned Land, there are exciting times ahead for the Power Metal genre.

Seaoftranquility.org

ARRAYAN PATH came up with their third release called “Ira Imperium”, after “Terra Incognita”, which has left very good impressions on me. While listening to “Ira Imperium” I recognized that the band has been evolving their music as their career progresses. Thirteen tracks of pure Power Metal with excellent melodies and a very beautiful voice to decorate each one.
Nicholas Leptos has a very charismatic voice that is a little bit similar to Appolo Papathanasio (FIREWIND), a voice pattern that has been integral with Arrayan ARRAYAN PATH’s music. I noticed that the guitars have evolved to high levels as all the ideas were ingenious. The riffs will remind you bands like MYSTIC PROPHECY, FIREWIND, BURNING BLACK, NIGHTMARE and a little bit of old HAMMERFALL. Vaggelis Maranis of SANVOISEN lended his great voice to some tracks influencing on the album’s quality to reach higher edges. Highlights of the album: “Gnosis of Promytheus”, “Ira Imperium (The Damned)”, “Katherine of Aragon”, “Emir Of The Faithful” and “Lost Ithaca”. I recommend “Ira Imperium” for the fans of true Metal and especially the period after 1996. Great job guys!

“IV: Stigmata”, the fourth full length album by Cyprus-based Neoclassical Power Metal act ARRAYAN PATH, is another solid notch in the band’s belt. If nothing else, “IV: Stigmata” is an enjoyable outing that shows ARRAYAN PATH as a more confident and dynamic band than previous works. Rather than the Egyptian and Mediterranean themes of previous albums, the band turns to Abrahamic and Christian mythology, which results in a much darker concept. Combine those themes with the heavier and darker songwriting approach and “IV: Stigmata” is a much more powerful and heavy handed approach to the band’s style.
While “Ira Imperium”, ARRAYAN PATH’s previous release, was a solid album, it ultimately sounded like some form of Malmsteen cloning. Not that the band didn’t have a touch of their own identity, it’s just that “IV: Stigmata” branches away from the tried and done to death waters that most Neoclassical acts sink into and shows ARRAYAN PATH stretching their wings a bit. Actually “IV: Stigmata” brings the band closer to a solid Power Metal sound while still retaining a lot of the Neoclassical touches of their previous material. Either way, the production is crystal clear and allows the band to fully capitalize on the dark and brooding atmosphere they create.

First and foremost, the lead guitar lines are incredible, with blazing fast arpeggios and melodic, classically infused scales. Fortunately for everyone, the lead lines stay entertaining while managing to avoid being overly pretentious wank fests. This leads to one of the reasons I say the band is finally striking out on their own: a stronger focus on atmosphere and solid songwriting, rather than an unoriginal backing band hiding in the shadow of a guitarist which seems to happen all too often. There is a much stronger emphasis on galloping rhythms and speedy segues, like the chorus and main riff on “Midnight And The First-Born Massacre”. The band never really breaks into the realms of Speed Metal but the songs are quick enough to get your heart rate climbing. On the other end of the spectrum, the slower, more plodding songs, such as “Stigmata”, focus more on subtle symphonic elements and slow paced, melodic guitar lines, while the band manages to keep the dark subject matter firmly engrained in their approach. It’s not all doom and gloom, as there are uplifting guitar leads that battle with Mediterranean keyboard lines and a few surprisingly poppy vocal lines scattered throughout.

Vocalist, and band founder, Nicholas Leptos, seems to be a lot more comfortable here. He has an extremely melodic mid-range comparable to the likes of Gцran Edman, who previously sang for Malmsteen. Where the vocals truly shine is the melodic intonation and hook laden delivery during the chorus lines. Leptos also belts out some Fabio Lione styled high vocals that keep the same melodic intonation as the mid-range vocals and are a vast improvement over the highs on the band’s previous outings. Every instrument is professionally played and has a strong presence: the bass and drums are both solid as a rock without being overly flashy and the rhythm and lead guitars are exceptional. The song writing is solid, with a nice mix of middling length and shorter songs. The shorter songs tend to be faster, barn burner style and the mid-length songs tend to go for a mid-pace epic approach.

The darker subject matter and more brooding atmosphere help set this apart from other Power Metal acts, but the simple fact is that this is still a Power Metal album. There are those that won’t dig the soaring guitars, keyboard-ridden atmosphere and high register vocals, but I love it. If you dig Malmsteen and bands like IRON MASK you will dig this. If you like anything else released by ARRAYAN PATH you will dig this. “IV: Stigmata” is the best ARRAYAN PATH release to date: darker, far reaching in scope and excellent in execution.
