End of status report

“Amaran” was an amazing power/thrash metal band from Sweden between years 2000 and 2005. This band was lead by alto Johanna DePierre accompanied by powerful and aggressive guitar riffs, bass that made its presence known, and thunderous drums. There are no keyboards, orchestral parts, or operatic vocals; in fact those would be so out of place with this aggressive style of music.

2004 was the year “Amaran” released their second and last album “Pristine In Bondage”, this second alum completely killed their previous album “A World Depraved”. Johanna didn’t try so hard so the vocals sounded cleaner, they were a bit annoying before. The lyrics in the 2002 album were written by Kari Kainulainen (one of the guitarists), where as in “Pristine In Bondage”, Johanna wrote most of them, the lyrics just sound more mature on their 2004 album. Then the guitars in “Pristine In Bondage” took more leads than before, made the music interesting, than just chugging the whole song.

All thirteen songs (thirteen if you own the Japanese edition with three bonus tracks) on this album are amazing and structured differently, though there is a pattern a lot of the songs have: chugging, melody, chugging, melody. None of these songs are filler. They are all exciting in their own way and are all really heavy. I’ve read a review for this album, it was titled “A Great Light Metal Record”, that’s total bull shit. No matter what anyone says, this a heavy album, at some points melodic, but for the most part heavy.

The opening track “Atropine” starts with a riff that is very soft, then instantly gets louder, no time in between soft and loud. All songs are powerful and heavy, but then there’s a little break, track four, “Inflict” is a slower song, but I wouldn’t say it’s a ballad, it’s heavy all the way through, and the chorus is faster, most of the excitement in the guitar riffs. There are two songs on this album with a twist, male vocals. “Katharsis” has a guest male vocalist that uses a death metal growl that contrasts well with Johanna’s voice perfectly. Then the next song “24 Pills” has distorted spoken words in it. The ninth track, “Crow Me” is a slower song. This song uses darker, weirder riffs, which would have needed a counter melody if there was only one guitar part, this counter melody made the riffs more complete and surprisingly tasteful. And this whole album and era ends with a last heavy riff.

So, my last bit of review before I tell you about the events that lead to the break up of “Amaran”. “Pristine in Bondage” is a great album, you’ll probably have to get it online if you want the CD, or otherwise use iTunes, and it’s worth the ten to eighteen bucks. Get it; you will not be complete without this album! Anyways…Sometimes I wonder what would have happened if Johanna had never left the band and if they kept writing music. Which also makes me wonder how Johanna felt when she found out the band had split up because they couldn’t find a replacement for her, when she left because she thought she would hold the band back…how ironic? Anyways…
