Each of Thy Majestie‘s album so far has revolved around historical events of different cultures, and ShiHuangDi is no different in that it sees this Italian power metal outfit once again exploring a new culture. But this is unique in the sense that it features the first time the band explores a Eastern/Oriental culture, with the album title ShiHuangDi referring to the first Chinese emperor, and this definitely was one of the main things that drew me to them, wondering what the band would sound like.

The instrumental Zhongguo introduces one to the album, and the sounds of birds at the background and the melody all have a somewhat oriental sound to them, with the majestic war drums and the keyboards sounding like a nice buildup for an epic Chinese war movie or historical film. However, the main issue here is, will the band be able to manage to keep up this oriental feel for the rest of the album, like Wintersun has done for their Time I?

Before we come to that, Thy Majestie‘s style of power metal music is rather reminiscent of bands such as Kamelot, as the riffing style of guitarist Simone proves, bringing to one’s mind the style of Thomas Youngblood in the earlier days of Kamelot, with the riffing pattern and the bass drums progressing together. The duel between guitars and keyboards that are aplenty throughout the album also reminds one of what bands such as Firewind like to engage in as well. But vocalist Alessio brings in a slight Sonata Arctica influence, with his vocals bearing quite similar qualities to Tony Kakko, and this is extremely obvious on tracks like Harbinger of New Dawn and Ephemeral.

The band is not afraid to utilise the keyboards heavily on the album, helping to shroud the music in a fog of mystery at times, and this is often used to help align the band’s music with the Chinese theme of the album with the melodies that are played at the background, at the same time giving the songs an epic feel throughout. Just listen to the intro of Under the Same Sky and feel goosepimples form on the back of your neck. Apart from that the band does not shy away from other influences, as evident from tracks like Siblings of Tian, that have a slight folk metal sound to them.

Unfortunately though, while present, the oriental references though present are rather few (though this could be due to my high expectations and initial excitement). But the music on ShiHuangDi is still pretty damn catchy and powerful, more than making up for this. Just look at the historical theme and concept of the album as a bonus, allowing one to escape from the usual themes of fantasy and dragons for once. And with the heavy Sonata Arctica feel on the album, ShiHuangDi has also been quite a nostalgic journey for me, making this all the more enjoyable.
