A while ago I had reviewed a 2-track promo of American Prog Metallers PRYMARY, which had sounded very promising. Out of the blue sky suddenly the self titled debut landed in my mailbox and not only because of the two songs of the promo, but also the apparently coming back US Prog Metal (I only say HOURGLASS) I put the CD into my player with quite some hopes.

The cover already is a good beginning, Mattias Noren is a guarantor for an outstanding optical element. Musically PRYMARY are not as accessible as for example HOURGLASS (to stay in the style and also the country), but have a quite higher grade of complexity, which definitely needs more sessions to get in than with most other "light prog" bands. But still you should not prematurely put down PRYMARY as fuddle orgy, because with that you would not do the band justice.

Here we get more extensive instrumental sections and also all in all more complex breaks and less catchy melodies, which do not have that much of an appeal at first listen yet, which some people might expect or hope for in a CD (also in Progressive Metal), but the devil here definitely is in the details, as the eight compositions offer us a wide array of ideas and permanently winding elements and moods, which do not exactly make it easy to get in, but on the other hand give us an invitation to a long lasting journey of discovery through the hills and valleys of the PRYMARY soundscape.

As usual I have a hard time to pick out single songs, simply because of the fact that there is so much happening within the tracks, just so much, PRYMARY do not try to impress with complex song structures, but rather convince through demanding compositions, where the guys also very well know, when they have to completely take out the complexity to propel the song forward (very well to be heard in "Tanglebox") and not to bury the listener.

I already had mentioned the cover and also the sound from the Voice Of The Arts Studio is more than average, so that I can recommend PRYMARY to all Proggers, who also do not have a bigger problem with a higher complexity, not everything sounds hundred per cent mature yet, but the guys are still young and this is only their debut, so there is quite something that might still follow, my friends!
