Seriously, I had completely written off IVORY TOWER. Their previous album "Beyond The Stars" had been released way back in 2000 and despite having been announced for two years (via Remedy Records and with the title of "IT"), their third effort "Subjective Enemy" only now sees the light of day, now via Pure Steel Records. And as I had loved said second album, I was really looking forward to finally hearing new material.

In my review for "Beyond The Stars" I had written that DREAM THEATER was the name that would come to mind, especially their older material, so it basically was pure Prog. "Subjective Enemy" still has the same foundation, that being Prog Metal, but I definitely detect a lot more Power Metal influences and usually I prefer my Prog infused with Power Metal and in this case it works wonders indeed and it definitely helps IVORY TOWER to shed the blatant comparisons of the previous album (despite the obvious quality).
17 tracks do not exactly hint at the regular Prog operas we get treated to, but seven of them are intros/interludes, with the exception of 11 minute epos "Awake" at the end (a great Prog song, btw), we do not get any of the songs that would require an over-length surcharge. With "Warning" the album gets kicked off with a good powerful Prog song, which showcases plentiful double-bass, but also a pretty extensive keyboard presence, with good vocals by Andre Fischer (which only lack some expressive power here and there and/or are little buried in the overall sound), but that only serves as somewhat of an appetizer for "Access Denied", which breaks out a little from the usual formula and has these great heavy guitars and melodies and also the keyboard/guitar/drum interplay, which all together reminds me of a criminally underrated American Prog band of many, many moons ago, which's name completely slips my mind right now, but it was an extremely welcome memory, now who the hell was that again... Anyways, while I am trying to dig into the deep, dark recesses of my brain, enjoy this song!

"Words" shows a far more orchestral side of IVORY TOWER, with some female vocals and light choirs, this almost reminds me a little of TRANS-SIBERIAN ORCHESTRA (and that is meant in a good way), whereas "My World" surprises with some Asian influences and an overall a little different song structure (which suits me fine, if they didn't have this really oddly sung bridge in there, where the voice sounds very forced and almost squeaky, which is a pity, because the chorus itself is very catchy and very good!). *I am still trying to find out what that band was...* "Welcome To" starts out as an extensive instrumental, before they introduce epic chants and choirs, which is yet another surprise and still fits into the album's context, which is nice indeed, same goes for the dark and short "Nails", where eerie keyboards underlay the half-spoken vocals, which have this haunting quality to them, leading into "Construction Site", where the Germans do not go Industrial on us, but remind me a bit of early VANDEN PLAS (referring to "Colour Temple"), where Andre's voice can unfold its full melodic quality.

So it is good to see that IVORY TOWER do not just stand still and continue with their DREAM THEATER worship (which as said before had been excellently done), but have opened up their sound a little while maintaining the same high level of quality. Surely not everything is great on "Subjective Enemy", but they still have a very high hit density and anyone, who likes Prog mixed with some Power Metal, should at least check out the Kiel-based band, for me personally one of the Prog highlights of the year! And no news on remembering that band from two paragraphs ago... *sigh*
