End of status report

Some of you might remember this band from their debut album ‘Primal Aggressor’. For me however, this is my first acquaintance with this American band and I must admit that it’s not an unpleasant one.

The band plays a mix of European and US-power metal, which also reminds me of the later work of Amorphis and Sentenced. Of course they haven’t managed to match the genius of these bands, but that’s no reason to complain. The atmosphere of the slower and more mid-tempo songs like ‘Blind Leads The Blind’ and ‘Desert Moon’ is simply good and fits perfectly to this time of the year. The music is also not too busy and easy to follow, which makes this CD a pleasant listening experience. However, personally I prefer the faster heavy metal tracks like ‘Lord Of The Wasteland’, the powerful Bathory-like ‘Disciples Of The Flame’ and the eighties rocker ‘Declaration’. The reason I prefer the faster tracks is not because the rest of the songs are of lesser quality, but more due to the fact that David Lowe’s limited vocal abilities sound better.

‘Declaration’ has definitely become a diverse album with a successful mix of the European and the US power metal sound. The production and especially the guitar sound could have been more rough and dirty if you ask me, because the album does sound a bit too neat at some points. But altogether ‘Declaration’ can be seen as a respectable heavy metal record and if you could appreciate former releases on Pure Steel Records, you should give this album a listen.
