In the summer of 2009 three lost souls trying to find an escape from the world outside their own musical passions found camaraderie in a website forum. With a shared joy of good, heavy, groovy, ‘riffy’ music and a shared disdain for the mundane and ‘samey’ music that regularly soured their ears, a bond was forged that would only prove to strengthen over time: a bond known simply as, Matanuska.
Alex Aitchison strapped on a Bass Guitar and took the reins as Lead Vocalist. With his powerful growls and ear for melody, as well as his dark and twisted approach to lyrics, Matanuska have a front man that rubs salt on the wounds.
Doug Combe sat behind the drums and immediately set the standard for what Matanuska would aim to be. His outstanding natural ability and energetic delivery is a benchmark for the rest of the band to adhere to.
Scott Rae wielded his guitar and immediately flooded the room with a barrage of riffs that would quickly form the basis of Matanuska’s first three songs: songs that would become a staple point in their live show.
Matanuska wear their influences on their collective sweat-soaked sleeve and they wear that sleeve with pride. Not afraid to be heavy. Not afraid to be mellow. Not afraid to inflict their infectious grooves upon the world.
Inspired by music, inspired by controversy, and inspired by the sheer joy and determination of playing the songs they have penned to crowds of unsuspecting legions, Matanuska, with their crisp riffs and pounding rhythms, are here to take the world by the balls.
