To celebrate Elliott Carter’s 100th birthday, Nonesuch released Elliott Carter: A Nonesuch Retrospective, a four-disc set, on February 24, 2009. The discs include most of the recordings Nonesuch made of Carter’s music between 1968 and 1985; The Observer calls the collection "covetable and historic."
These recordings include performances by many acclaimed musicians, including Paul Jacobs, Gilbert Kalish, the Composers Quartet, Jan DeGaetani, Fred Sherry, Arthur Weisberg, the Contemporary Chamber Ensemble, and the Chicago Symphony Orchestra conducted by James Levine. The original Nonesuch records were produced by Joanna Nickrenz and Marc Aubort, and later, Teresa Sterne, Max Wilcox, and Oliver Knussen. A 58-page booklet—with photos, score examples, texts, an essay by Paul Griffiths, and tributes by musicians and composers including Virgil Blackwell, Tod Machover, Ursula Oppens, and Fred Sherry—accompanies the discs.
A two-time Pulitzer Prize winner and the first composer to receive the United States National Medal of Arts, Elliott Carter is internationally recognized as one of the leading American voices of the 20th-century classical music tradition. First encouraged toward a musical career by his friend and mentor Charles Ives, Carter attended Harvard University, where he studied with Walter Piston, and later went to Paris, where for three years he studied with Nadia Boulanger. He then returned to New York to devote his time to composing and teaching. Carter was recognized by the Pulitzer Prize Committee for the first time in 1960 for his groundbreaking String Quartet No. 2. Stravinsky hailed Carter’s Double Concerto for Harpsichord & Piano with Two Chamber Orchestras (1961) and Piano Concerto (1967), as “masterpieces,” while Aaron Copland called him “one of America's most distinguished creative artists in any field.”

Born when Enrico Caruso was cutting cylinders, Elliott Carter has lived through most of the history of recording, and contributed to that history through his associations with various companies. First among these was Nonesuch, beginning in 1969 and continuing for over twenty years. Two albums of the 1970s, featuring his first two string quartets and Double Concerto, played a conspicuous role in carrying his music to a wide audience, and so in bringing him the acclaim that encouraged him to go on, with undiminished vigor, into a ‘late period’ that has lasted more than thirty years. Nonesuch was not only the first label to give Carter’s music international distribution and continuing support, it also placed his work in an appropriate context of discovery and adventure.
Elliott Carter turned 100 years old on December 11, 2008. His centenary is being celebrated internationally with performances in New York, Madrid, Turin, Amsterdam, Paris, Berlin, Tokyo, Vienna, and London. 5.0 out of 5 stars - Authoritative performances., March 31, 2009 By: Aaron This is a convenient box containing a handful of Carter's best music up to 1982, from the early Piano Sonata to the Triple Duo. Many of the recordings are currently available from Nonesuch as individual releases (Nonesuch 71234, 71249, and 79248), but if you've put off buying any of these, now is your chance to get them all at a bargain price.
The clincher for this set, though, is the release of a few key recordings never available on CD or currently out of print. Paul Jacobs' 1982 recording of Night Fantasies -- Carter's largest work for piano and one of the most significant works for the instrument of the last fifty years -- has inexplicably never been released in digital format, and it's an essential addition to the discography. Jacobs was one of the four joint commissioners of the piece, and his performance is entirely as worthwhile as Oppens' and Rosen's. More deliberate than either of those, Jacobs luxuriates in the expansive chordal sections, but still flies through the more virtuosic passages with abandon. He may not have Oppens' delicate counterpoint or Rosen's architectural prowess, but it's a compelling and historically significant performance.
We also get reissues of the Triple Duo (also performed by the dedicatees, The Fires of London) and the 1981 song cycle In Sleep, In Thunder (with Martyn Hill and the London Sinfonietta, led by longtime Carter advocate Oliver Knussen), and a bonus of James Levine's fantastic performance of the Variations for Orchestra with the CSO, previously released on Deutsche Grammophon.
The other performances are well-documented and reviewed elsewhere; suffice it to say, they are all definitive recordings by seasoned Elliott Carter performers. The Composers Quartet, in my opinion, has the edge on both Arditti and Juilliard in their early recording of the first two quartets, particularly with the expansive desert landscapes of No. 1.
My only disappointment is that the Duo for violin and piano is unfortunately missing, another historic Nonesuch recording (Paul Zukofsky and Gilbert Kalish, who premiered the piece) which ought to have been included. Despite this, there's little excuse not to get this bargain set while you can. Perfect for Carter aficionados and new listeners alike, it's a fantastic selection of the breadth of his musical style in performances that can't be beat.

5.0 out of 5 stars - Carter Revelations, May 13, 2009 By: Arthur Leonard (New York, NY USA) I've found Elliott Carter's music quite difficult over the years, and even with so much exposure to his more recent output at the 100th birthday concerts, I've had my share of problems. I decided to go back to the beginning and ordered this box, which has mainly the Nonesuch recordings of his earlier output through to the early 1970s, including the famous Composers Quartet renditions of the first two string quartets. What I heard was a revelation. I finally started to "understand," in the sense of having some musical appreciation, of this music. Nonesuch also licensed some fine recordings of early Carter works from other sources, so the box gives you a decent cross-section, including some orchestral music well performed. I can recommend this very highly for people looking for a "way into Carter."

Between 1968 and 1990, Nonesuch produced a remarkable series of recordings on LP and CD showcasing the works of Elliott Carter, which for many listeners was their initial encounters with this challenging yet richly rewarding music. First experiences in many cases have proved to be the best as well, since several of these performances have achieved classic status and arguably have not been surpassed. Considering such great performers as mezzo-soprano Jan de Gaetani, pianists Paul Jacobs and Gilbert Kalish, cellists Joel Krosnick and Fred Sherry, flutist Harvey Sollberger, oboist Charles Kuskin, the Composers Quartet, the Contemporary Chamber Ensemble under Arthur Weisberg, and the Chicago Symphony Orchestra with James Levine, among other acclaimed artists, it's not difficult to grasp how highly their performances are esteemed and why they have remained in print for several years, when much of Nonesuch's modern music catalog from the 1970s and ‘80s has disappeared. Fortunately, these recordings have been brought together in a slim box set of four discs and a generous booklet to celebrate Carter's 100th birthday, so the problem of collecting the individual albums has been eliminated. Here are 14 works that represent Carter's most important work from 1942 to 1982, basically the early and middle periods of his long career, since he has remained active into his centennial year and composed music not covered by this retrospective. Yet despite the lack of late pieces, this collection of core works is essential for any serious Carter admirer and is a comprehensive introductory package for newcomers to the music of this American original. Highly recommended.
Elliott Cook Carter, Jr. (born December 11, 1908) is a two-time Pulitzer Prize-winning American composer born and living in New York City. He studied with Nadia Boulanger in Paris in the 1930s, and then returned to the United States. After a neoclassical phase, he went on to write atonal, rhythmically complex music. His compositions, which have been performed all over the world, include orchestral and chamber music as well as solo instrumental and vocal works.
He has been extremely productive in his latter years, publishing more than 40 works between the ages of 90 and 100,[1] and three more since he turned 100.
