В начале 1973 Джордж Янг на пару со своим партнером Гари Вандой (Harry Vanda), в сиднейской студии Albert работали над альбомом своего проекта The Marcus Hook Roll Band. Идея этого проекта появилась у них в Лондоне, как случайное, насмешливое развлечение, но обрела более серьезную ауру, после того, как американское подразделение компании EMI проявило интерес к записи полноценного альбома, забегая вперед стоит сказать, что в Америке этот альбом так и не вышел. В процессе работы, Джордж и Гари рекрутировали Малькольма и Энгуса в качестве гитаристов поддержки. Впервые Малькльм и Энгус работали вместе еще до образования AC/DC. В результате был записан альбом Tales Of Old Granddaddy который изначально планировалось выпустить только в Австралии.

AC/DC is a band that has always worked from a relatively small palette of rock ‘n’ roll sounds, showing an impressive focus in sound right out of the gate. It’s as though Malcolm and Angus Young, the brothers at the core of the group, knew exactly the sound that they were after when they put AC/DC together. And maybe they did, if their first recording, with the Marcus Hook Roll Band in 1973, is any indication.

The Marcus Hook Roll Band was a studio project helmed by an older Young brother, George, and his production partner Harry Vanda, who were the guitarists & main songwriters for The Easybeats. The resulting record, Tales of Old Grand-daddy, demonstrates that the biggest influence on Malcolm and Angus was the songwriting of Vanda and George Young. The approach to the songs is immediately familiar, even though there is far more of a heart of soul to this recording than what lay in the future of the younger Young brothers. On “Shot in the Head,” the hard left and right guitars are there, similar in approach but not quite the same as chords join and individual notes are picked out by one guitar around the other. Even the song itself is familiar—it seems obvious that Angus and Malcolm snatched one of the song’s chord riffs for use in their own “Rock and Roll Singer.” There are glimpses of the future found throughout the record, mixing an economical style of songwriting that the Youngs would keep with a soulful, eclectic approach that they would abandon when they took the wheel of their own group. The best moments here, though, are those in which the Marcus Hook Roll Band sounds like something unto itself, rather than a studio-built lark that Angus and Malcolm used as a training ground. A highlight of the record is “The People and the Power,” a devastating soul number with a refrain of “The People don’t have the power to change things anymore.” Even better is “Silver Shoes and Strawberry Wine,” a cryptic tune that burns slowly and seems tailormade for a trip of some sort—real, metaphorical, chemically induced. Beyond these songs, much of what is here comes across as uncomfortably structured, but it’s still an interesting listen as the starting point for AC/DC. When the smoke has cleared, in the big scheme of things and despite a few detours through a landscape more soulful than heavy, it turns out that if you’ve heard the Marcus Hook Roll Band then you’ve heard every AC/DC album—or at least the sounds that the younger Young brothers would appropriate for their own purposes, adding a little volume and turning them into that characteristic AC/DC sound along the way.

These recordings could more or less be called the missing link between Easybeats and Flash & the Pan.

After the split up of the Easybeats songwriters and did a lot of production for other artists, but also went into the studios to record for themselves with various other musicians. One of these projects was called Marcus Hook Roll Band, and an full album plus a couple of singles were released under that name. Not much promotion was made and the records were not released in many countries.

Musically it comes as a natural continuation of the style that the Easybeats had played on the last album "Friends" with songs like "St Louis". Musically a great rock/soul album with both Harry Vanda and George Young on lead vocals.

Wally Allen of The Pretty Things was also a big part of this project, which makes it even more interesting. George Young's two AC/DC brothers Angus and Malcolm are also here.

There are some real gems here; "Natural Man" and "Shot in the Head" were fine singles and "Cry For Me" and "Silver Shoes and Strawberry Wine" are great songs.

Originally released in in 1973 but unfortunately this is a pretty hard to find album today; it was re-released on CD in Australia in the 1990's , but it's already deleted again.

The Marcus Hook Roll Band - an identity assumed by Harry Vanda & George Young at the very end of their four year stint in London as session musicians and independent record producers. Though they had regularly issued material under a string of assumed identities (Haffey's Whiskey Sour, Moondance, Paintbox, Band of Hope, Grapefruit, etc.) this was the most extensive of their projects.

After repeated requests for a tour to support the product were turned down flat, American interest waned and album release was scrapped (it's only issue being in Australia as 'Tales of Old Grandaddy').

The Marcus Hook tracks follow in the tradition of the best Easybeats' material - tough, perfectly structured and intelligent. A very convincing political and social sentiment runs through many of the songs, as does a strong soul/funk influence.
