In Finland, Zero Nine is known as the country's own '80s hard rock cliché, in the vein of Def Leppard, Bon Jovi, Twisted Sister or anything that comes in mind. This impression is incorrect. When 09 was first mentioned in Finnish rock press (in 1980), they were playing Pink Floyd. The band's first album, Visions, Scenes and Dreams, shows that their style still owed much to Rainbow (circa Down to Earth) or Blue Öyster Cult (circa Fire of Unknown Origin). After the positive reception of Visions, Scenes and Dreams, Zero Nine dared to co-operate with Ian Gillan in Britain on their second album Blank Verse, but the album was considered too rushed. After a third attempt called Headline, 09 quit banging their heads against the wall and turned into a more straight-forward '80s hard rock act, which unfortunately is how they are still remembered.

This album kickstarts with "Vision, Scenes and Dreams" which is an impressive song – think about crossing Rainbow's "Tarot Woman" (excluding the lengthy intro) with the Def Leppard hit "Let It Go." "Down the Line", which I recall as the band's first single, is another fine performance. "Who's Gonna Cry Now" is undeniably catchy, while "Dreamless World" even tries to emulate the Led Zeppelin classic "Stairway to Heaven" – partially succeeding. The rest of the album is notably less impressive and a slightly repetitive listening experience, but on the other hand: none of the songs is bad. This is a very rare feature when talking about '80s hard rock. Almost any UK or US band would have one or two disgusting macho cock-rockers ruining the complete feel of the album, but Zero Nine has none. The result: one of the most palatable early '80s hard rock albums in the whole world.
