Embryo Dissident.

"Это пример того, как мы звучали до начала проекта Embryo" (Christian Burchard, Munchen. December 1999)
This album is an Embryo album without being one.. As this collection had appeared under Mal Waldren name back then. Indeed this 67 live collection shows the partnership between American jazz pianist and vibraphonist Christian Burchard, but also many other Embryo familiars like drummer Serfas, bassist Meid (also AD), etc. The whole thing was pure jazz back then, you could even call swing, because of its Lionel Hampton-type mallet-driven jazz. The quartet developed some very enjoyable but out-of-scope for this site jazz that borders Armstrong or the afore-mentioned Hampton. Virtuosic, but certainly not arrogant or show-off-ey, the 9 tracks taken from '67 concerts in Munich or Graz (Austria) are all originals penned by Mal Waldren or Burchard (just one) , with one cover, Autumn Leaves, with none standing out from the selection. Quite pleasant , but completely anecdotal for prog!!!

One of those historically important albums, one of those that made Germany the third force in 70's rock after UK and US and second in prog (after UK and before Italy and France kicked in). This album is as important and relevant as Yeti and Lemmingen from Amon Duul II , Tago Maco from Can , UFO from Guru Guru , Gila's debut album , Malesch from Agitation Free and Ash Ra Tempel's debut and Faust's first two albums. Later on there will be more of them from Neu! , Kraftwerk but less relevant to prog. Those albums helped define German rock for the following decades and Embryo became internationally reknowned for their particularly free and ever inventive jazz-rock often tainted with world music a bit in the mould of Agitation Free's Malesch. Klaus Doldinger's Passport will also dable a lot into this area. Christian Burchard is of course one of the founding members of Amon Duul II but also the leader in this band.
I have only heard the old release without the bonus tracks but I am piqued with curiosity as for the 26 min long track but it could be also full of long soloing and the tracks are not from that era.

EMBRYO are an acquired taste but once you have the taste you just can not get enough. In my days of expanding my music collection into the more obscure I snagged a copy of EMBRYO's live recording from their golden era (1971) and man I still have not recovered. To say this is anything less than amazing is an understatement ! Four epic live tracks with a jazz/early FLOYD prowess and a groove that just never seems to really stop, ebbing and flowing with creativity. The only bad on this whole album would be the sound quality which suffers a bit and feels fatigued at times (likely the source radio tape). But having said that the quality is still very very listenable and 100% enjoyable (I just wish it had been recorded better... not unlike the GENESIS albums). On this album and live show, EMBRYO blended heavy doses of cosmic flute and sax with guitar, bass, drum and keyboards to create an album of intense beauty. Truly a masterpiece and fans of Miles Davis fusion, MAHAVISHNU ORCHESTRA and Krautrock like AMON DUUL II will need to find a copy of this jem!!!

Embryo's second album is just as good and important in Germany's early prog history. Largely instrumental and constantly surprising , Rache is a very worthy follow-up to their groundbreaking debut. Those eastern influences meddled in their excellent jazz-rock makes want to create another sub-movement that I would call Folk-jazz-prog (just kidding) but the fac t that this is from 71 (the term Fusion did not exist back then ) is certainly of of the earliest examples of World-Fusion music.
The two extra tracks are not from that era (91) but do stay in the spirit of the album and do not disturb the newcomer as much as the old hippy that wore his vinyl to transparancy.
Well worth a spin!!!!!

After their Rache album (and a cancelling of their Spanish tour because of a track "Espana si, Franco no" on Rache) , Embryo will go in a frenzy recording three albums worth of music in 8 months time but their label (United Artistes) only released this one as the rest was deemed too uncommercial for release. The sleeve artwork looks like a hippy playing with the Olympic flame (they are in Munich and in late spring 1972) and the group is now a keyboard-less quartet, which will alter the group's sound quite a bit. Most of the songs are still above 5-mins, but still retain a certain opening towards ethnic jazzy jams.
This third album is well in the line of their first two , ever diving deeper into eastern influences producing some of the earliest examples of fusion music (ethnic folk & jazz-prog) much worth the investigation as well as the investment. Forgotten Sea is particularly moving with its amazing bass and guitar interplay and The Sung Song (which is anything but) could almost fit on Santana's masterpiece CARAVANSERAI, recorded the same year.
The other two albums recorded simultaneously (don't quote me on whether they were working on the three albums at once, but I've read this one more than one occasion) are Steig Aus and Rocksession but were released much later. Steig Aus being even better than this one, but both are much worthy your investments.

(Lex) www.old-rock.ru - 2003
Embryo Steig Haus is a great fusion album, maybe the most jazzier of this german band, that always had a fusion work.
The opener, Radio Marrakesh/ Orient Express, is a ten minute song with impressing bass and drums in the rhytmhic section, plus great organ play and good guitar playing, mainly the solos. There is good percussion too and some flute. This song is a breathtaking performance by skilled musicians.
Then comes Dreaming Girls, 10-minute-long too, again with great bass playing and drumming, it is slower, mellow in the beginning. There is good Marimba playing by Bunchard. The violin solos in this track are great. The violin is slow over great bass lines and drumming. The rhythm changes some times, faster, slower, some improvisation, different keyboard sounds. Some bass and percussion passages. Then the violin solos and some keyboards too. And some percussion pyrotechnichs with some keyboard effects.
Then the last song, a seventeen minute epic, starts with some funky rhythm and good keyboards, a very fatty and haunty organ tone, plus violin. Lots of variations. Great organ playing and then great bass playing. The bass players are really good. It is difficult to describe a song like this because there are lots of variations and improvisations, but the overall is pretty good, a great classic, with skillful playing, mainly percussion, bass, organ and mellotron. A great jazz session provided by this group that as far as I know, had lots of jazz influences, but besides some world music, like in We Keep On.
An excellent album recommended to all the fans of Jazz Rock/Fusion and all interested in great musicianship in general.

Rock session is another album consisting of material they recorded during sessions between 1971 and 1972. Actually the band was planning to release this stuff already in 1972. But their record company UA was not pleased by it, so they recorded first Father, Son & Holy Ghosts and the songs from these sessions have been used for this album here and Steig aus. The line-up is almost identical on these two albums, with the difference that Sigi Schwab was replacing Roman Bunka on guitar. But it's anything else than a bad album and rather a very interesting one who is deeply into typical jazz-rock in the Krautrock vein.
The opener A place to go is a very orientally influenced piece with marimbas, keys, electric guitar, percussion and very "kraut-ish" sounding vocals. Really great stuff and anyone loving this sub-genre will be fascinated by it. Entrances, the longest track is dominated by Schwab's excellent jazzy guitar before Hammond is taking over. The work of the rhythm section is as well just awesome. It's a highly jazzy piece on an album that is probably the most jazzy one of their three session records, no wonder since jazz pianist Mal Waldron was involved in three of the four tracks as a composer. In the last third of the track there is an excellent sax solo by Hofmann. This one is for sure the highlight of the album.
Second side of the record is the more relaxing and soaring one starting with Warm canto, a very soft and mellow track played on vibes, keys, violin and percussion plus electric guitar and piano by Waldron in its second half. Although being a rather quiet song in the beginning it's revealing a fascinating development in its course. Last one Dirge is starting as well with a highly soaring atmosphere with vibes, guitar and then violin and e-piano. As on the whole album the bass and drum work is again excellent. Also this song is developing after a while to a fascinating one.
As a SUMMARY this album might be in a way different from their excellent other ones like Father,Son... or Embryo's Rache, but nevertheless I would say it's an essential one by them and recommended to any lover of jazzy Krautrock.

This album can be seen two ways: the fourth album as a successor to FSHG or their fifth or sixth if you'll include their Brain releases, but anyway it is a companion to RockSessions and Steig Aus, and the album's title is such a delight if you know these three albums. Production-wise WKO is definitely up two notches from the improvisations of the Brain releases, but I wouldn't quite call this a slick production. Released on the BASF label (UA/Liberty dropped them after all) with a superb egg artwork with a cloud almost taking the shape of an Embryo, the group recorded this album is Ascona, Italy under the patronage of Dieter Dierckx.
Opening on the Moroccan-laden Abdul Malek fusion track where Embryo sings and scats until heaven arrives. The unusual Don't Come Tomorrow starts out on uneasy Bunka vocals and accompanied by a delightful piano and Mariano's amazing flute, the whole thing underlined by a few tasty licks of mellotron. Grandiose and garanteed musical orgasms!! The following Ehna Abu Late returns to an ethnic background, but the scalding of the name is provoking some semi-voodoo-type of hypnotics, which the fantastic backdrop music is enhancing to allowBunka to pull off one of Embryo's most brilliant solo on any instruments. Hackbrett Dance is again relying on mid-east or Maghreb-type of adventures
The flipside opens on the 12-mins+ No Place To Go is a 100mph track where the group solo their hearts away, first Mariano, than Bunka, Mariano again (but on sax this time) then ex-Missing Link and future-Missus Beastly Miekautsch's pianos (there is some Traffic and Xohl in that solo) laced in the with Bunka's guitar again. Fantastic stuff. The album closer the 6-minutes Flute & Saz is an ethnic Magrebin tracks were oimprovs are having the better role.
The Cd version of WKO (on Disconforme label) comes with a superb pair of bonus tracks, both remaining in the wild jazz-rock realm, with tons of sizzling leads, torrid solos, layers of mellotron etc. and both absolutely staying completely faithful in style and quality with the rest of the album, thus ensuring that WKO last another 23 minutes of pure happiness, beit ethnic or not. Yet another astounding Embryo album that most progheads should at least be aware of.

This album has a horrible reputation and I must say that it is at least partially merited, but it's not quite as dreadful as it generally thought. Given that this is an Embryo album and it is surrounded by a series of excellent (if not nearing to perfection) albums, Surfin' has a few serious flaws, including a stupid name and an awful comic book artwork, but it's the only bad album in their 70's career. Given that this album IS indeed an Embryo album, it can't be that bad an album, and indeed there are far worst albums around. It might even be argued that Surfin' might be best worst album around and that most groups would love to have their worst album of Surfin's quality/calibre. (Are you sure, you're following me?)
Up to now we could call most of Embryo's album jazz-rock or fusion albums, but with Surfin' we're definitely heading in the funk or jazz-funk spectrum, but also dips a bit all over the place with Caribbean musics such as calypso and more.. After the opening ultra-funk with almost rap vocals Turn Me On (not really their cleverest idea, you'll easily imagine), the album heads into a bizarre mix of straight rock with more experimental passages (Music Of Today) and later in a weird funky jazz (Secret) that does hold some merits (Bunka's guitar is quite excellent) and finally with the short title track, reeking of bad funk. The same bad funk opens up the flipside on New Ridin', but this time adding almost convincingly (the key word being almost) an Indian sitar to the mix. I can imagine a few LSD trip going awry at this point. A short intriguing LunaMatic and a lengthy Broken Glasses (where the group gets into calypso music (they'll have an album worth of it later on in the 70's), and although this track has definitive lengths, I gather that there are a few musicians who dissected these solos and breaks. The cosing Side Traclk is IMHO, the best of the album, most likely because it relates mostly with the other albums they did in that era.
Well if you're into adventurous music and an Embryo fan, you might still want to check out Surfin' because it has moments, but let's face it, once the initial discovery, this album will be a rare spinner and collect dust on the shelves, so you'd better stay away from it. But I gather that by shelf-clearance time, you'll throw/discard away a lot of other albums before sending this one by the trap..

Well I was never sure what happened with their prevous album Surfin', but something awfully wrong apparently and Embryo's output was never as brilliant as it was before that album. Having been told to stay away from that album many times by everyone I know, I've never heard Surfin' (the title sounded very suspicious too, so I was never intrigued either), but by looking at rating sites, something went awry and Embryo was never really as brilliant after. Even this album (a good return to their usual JR/F) failed to match WKO or Steig Aus and only Reise would match in quality, but let's face it by that time (79) Embryo was a white ethnic group more than the sizzling fusion band of their early 70's. So for Bad Heads, Embryo was sextet with Mariano and Hoffman as frontmen and through a weird artwork, their return to JR/F was partly successful. Actually this line-up is much reminiscent of the one that plated on WKO, three years earlier, if you'll except Hoffman and "guest vocalist" Archer.
Staring with the track Layed Back (sic), the group starts quite well its return with ex Missus Beastly Dieter Miekautsch's piano resonating brilliantly. The following 12-mins Nina Kupends is a long improve jazz jam where there are lengths (something that was never the case before) especially when the track nearly stops, but overall the group performance is quite impressive between the piano and Burchard's brilliant vibes, even though Maria Archer's vocals are not exactly my cup of tea, but she's no worse than Purim is in RTF. Closing on the sax-lead vitriolic title track, Embryo seemed to be heading for a masterpiece, but it takes time to get used to: indeed Archer sounds like a Bjork and the music could also easily come out of the Icelandic Siren as well, if it wasn't for Burchardt's brilliant marimba solo.
Unfortunately Embryo opens the flipside with Road Song, the same type of track, but this time, not only is the charm gone, but funky bass twist gives it an unbalanced attack, not helped any by its 6-minutes length. The equally lengthy After the Rain starts out on cosmic noises, but quickly grows into a mindless late 70's fusion, choosing cool virtuosity, rather than torrid interplay (here they sound like late RTF or mid-period WR), but at least Archer's voice is given a rest. Klondyke Netti seems born out of a Miles Davis jam, in which Eno would've crept out of the woodwork with a few phasors and make the whole thing a bit creepy. The album closes on a free jazz improve Tag X that fails to reach the 2-mins mark. The Cd Disconforme re-issue comes with a 17-mins improve JR/F that seems to copy closely the Klondyke track without the cosmic phasors. The track melts right into the album and brings an added value, even though there is an improve that could've been edited..
Not quite as successful as their previous masterpieces, Embryo came back to their normal level after a catastrophic Surfin', and if Bad Heads sounds a bit different, at least it was Embryo's will to try something else, having the guts to try it and talent to almost pull it off , bar a few details.

This double album is certainly one of the best attempts to fuse progressive-type rock with ethnic/world music and few have succeeded as well as Embryo's Reise (voyage). Indeed around the departure of the ever-important Roman Bunka from the group, plans had been made to travel from Istanbul to Pakistan and Nepal, while recording their musical encounters with the indigenes found on their paths. The album is not just that, there are also tracks coming from left, right & centre, but overall, that's a fair description of the album's content. Among Embryo's latest recruits were guitarist Drexler (ex-Out Of Focus) and wind player Josch (ex-Missus Beastly) whom were part of the trip. The gatefold vinyl comes with a deliciously illustrated booklet detailing their trip in both German and English texts. I hear the Cd version has that too, but I doubt of the legibility of the format.
Where this album is an important one for progheads is that the track list is abounding of jams between the Embryo members and the local musicians, sometimes resulting to some absolutely stunning jams. Difficult to start describing these jams, but most had a structure for conventional entendre (no free form or voluntarily dissonant). The group was giving improvised multimedia concerts along the way, some including stunning live performance paintings. In either case, I'm sure they brought back hundreds of hours of jams and gave us a small selection here. Some of these jams are actually really successful, mixing perfectly the European (often electric) rock musicians and the often-acoustic local musicians (such as the opening Road To Asia), while others are more ethnic players playing their stuff while Europeans are waiting for a chance to hop on boards. On the other hand there are some openly and wildly saturated guitar rock pieces.
Symbolic of the 70's hippy dream, this road is now highly unlikely to all western or eastern youth as international conflicts have long rendered the road impossible to accomplish safely nowadays. A real must and not only in Embryo's discography.

A good part of the Embryo catalogue has no business on this site simply because those albums are simply out of the scope of the progArchives. Such is the case with this album, as we are fully into indian music with slight jazz touches but nowhere close to fusion music as is convened onto our site. Neither will I recommend this album to someone investigating classical Indian Music (I am no authority on that subject but do appreciate some of that trance music) , because this failed to captivate any of my attention. I think that it should be considered as an exception in Embryo's dicography and is not representative of their moremeaningful works.
