Tony Patterson is a solo artist/musician and composer from the North east of England. He is probably best known as singer with top UK GENESIS tribute act REGENESIS and he also contributed to Nick Magnus’ last three solo albums.
Brendan Eyre has been playing keyboards in a variety of bands and previously released a CD of his own instrumental compositions entitled: ‘Ghost Ships’. Together with vocalist Marc Atkinson he formed RIVERSEA - their debut album: ‘Out Of An Ancient World’ was released in 2012 to great reviews, and Brendan and Marc had the honour of being voted Best Newcomer at the 2012 Classic Rock Society awards.
In the closing months of 2012, Tony and Brendan discussed the idea or working on a project together that would reflect their native North-East roots. The album would feature a character returning to the North East after so many years away from the place he loved. Memories of loss, heartache and the abiding beauty of the North East landscape would once again draw him back to the places and people he left behind, the wasteland it had become, the unfinished business and the ghosts he needed to lay to rest that had haunted him for so long.
A place he knew he must return to one day. A place called Northlands!

‘Northlands’ is indeed a very beautiful and heartfelt work! A fair chunk of it is instrumental, but there are not really any particularly “rocky” parts as such, instead the entire album is symphonic in construction with moving moments of genuine beauty regularly on display, so it works perfectly on an emotional level; in fact there is a hauntingly relaxed atmospheric quality ever present, and of course needless to say, it is extremely melodic throughout.
Brendan and Tony seem to cover the bulk of the keyboards, guitars, programming and other acoustic instruments between them, and Tony deals with the delivery of the lyrics in his own, unique, Gabriel-esque and heartfelt way.
The multi-layered melodic orchestral keyboard textures and singing electric guitars are all fantastic and often quite moving, and for me, there are flashes off fellow northerners BARCLAY JAMES HARVEST at their symphonic best during some passages. Of course the fact that there are musical contributions from many other musicians including: Steve Hackett (guitar), Nick Magnus (keyboards / programming) and John Hackett (flute) only adds to the symphonic rock splendour of the album.
There are also a couple of very notable horn solos that brought memories to me of the fantastic atmospheric feel of the early BLUE NILE albums, so that is a really nice twist that also further strengthens the “Northern” elements of the work quite substantially.
‘Northlands’ is a beautifully crafted album and sure to be remembered as an outstandingly individual Progressive Rock releases of 2014.
