По уровню мастерства фантастический квартет из Страны Восходящего Солнца можно поставить рядом с завзятыми «технарями» (послушайте хотя бы “Variations On a Theme by Brian Smith”).

5 stars It took 6 years for Ain Soph to finally record this amazing follow-up to their equally amazing debut album. The original lineup 90 (the band was formed in '77) was fully incorporated, since drummer Tomiie and keyboardist Fujikawa rejoined their former fellows (they had left before Ain Soph's debut was recorded). Some of the material already existed during the old days, so basically 'Hat & Field' is like a groups of four musician friends catching up. The title shows one of their major influences, Hatfield and the North: since these guys are really Canterbury freaks, it's no wonder that we can also find the inheritance of other similar acts such as National Health and Gilgamesh, as well as 'Rain Dances'-era Camel. The most explosive moments show the clear influence of Return to Forever and Holdsworth's solo albums. The playing is superb: not only each individual is a top-notch master on their instrument, but also they can interpleay with immaculate fluency through all these complex time signatures and complicated compositions, keeping an aura of delicate sophistication, as if it were actually an easy task to do. The moments in which Yozox and Fujikawa lay their challenging interplays are executed with infinite finesse. As in their previous album, the appearance of some exotic lines reminds the listener of their Japanese essence: their jazzy prog is not a clone, but the result of an inventively idiosyncratic recreation of an established pattern. There is a subtle difference, though: 'Hat & Field' puts a major emphasis on the jazz factor, subduing the symphonic thing for that matter. The beautiful opening track 'Swan Lake' is really captivating: through its tasteful delicateness, it has a subtle energy in it that makes it catchy. 'Hat & Field', the namesake suite, starts the same way, until an explosion of pyrotechnics takes place during its last section: this explosion is effectively continued in the glued following track 'Mizzle'. 'Magic Carpet' and 'Pipe Dream' follow in the same vein as the opening number, while tracks 2, 5 and 7 work as relaxing interludes, which create an introspective, slightly melancholy mood. Lovers of Canterbury and the best 70s jazz-fusion will most likely love this one too, and eventually, discover the particular beauty of Ain Soph's own jazz-prog voice.

Prolusion. In distant 1970 the first three musicians, whose names you can see in the lineup above, initiated one of the legends of Japanese Prog, AIN SOPH, although the outfit received its current name only seven years later. The band's status is still "active" (they did four gigs in Japan last year, for instance), but it's hard to find their discography to be abundant in, say, epochal releases. In the course of their long history Ain Soph played live much more often than they recorded in the studio, so they have only four studio albums to their credit: "A Story of Mysterious Forest" (1980), "Hat & Field" (1986), "Marine Menagerie" (1991) and "Five Evolved From Nine" (1993). The latter two were lately reissued via the tandem of Poseidon and Musea Records.
Analysis. As mentioned on the band's website, "Marine Menagerie" was recorded in the summer of 1991, but all the compositions were written in the '70s. After hearing this album every tested Prog head will immediately realize that such titles as Ride on a Camel or Hat & Field aren't accidental. These are nothing else but the band's unabashed hints to the primary sources of their inspiration, namely Camel and Hatfield & The North, of course. However, it would be both unjust and incorrect to call Ain Soph the imitators of their idols, and not the followers of them. There are obvious traces of artefacts of the band's benefactors on the album, but not everywhere, while one of the seven tracks present (to be named in due time) is free of any influences. "Marine Menagerie" is not devoid of original ideas in general, while the infiltration of acoustic guitar solos into the electric textures, which takes place on most tracks, is distinctly innovative. The half-minute atmospheric intro, Wind & Water, is too short to describe in detail. There is another short track on the album. Located right at the core of it, Little Piece III is something of a sensible sketch for a piano interlude. The real opener, Flooded by Sunlight begins and develops rather smoothly, the energy level remaining mostly muted. The rest of the piece is more intense, intricate and diverse at once, but much of it is still built around melodic hooks, which doesn't imply many changes in direction and genuine improvisations either. If you can remember the most jazz-inflected tracks from Camel's least jazz-infected '70s albums, such as "Raindance" or "Breathless", you can get the rough idea of what Flooded by Sunlight is about, though of course, the absence of vocals is of help to Ain Soph (which sounds more complicated than its meaning). All in all this is a good piece, but not, by a long way, a classic. The title track follows and is much more compelling. The striking prevalence of quasi-improvisational harmonies makes it closer to National Health, though another comparison would still be to Camel - around the time of their most successful experiments in combining Art-Rock and Jazz-Fusion ("Moonmadness"), with a similar balance between melody and complexity. The fifth composition, Variations, is filled with a wide variety of variations on multiple themes, stylistically moving from symphonic Prog, through the numerous bordering manifestations of Art-Rock and Jazz-Fusion, to Jazz-Fusion with RIO-like atonalities. This is a really stunning track, of the highest progressive caliber, and is amazingly original in addition. While taking the Ride On a Camel, you will certainly meet the legend's mirage, but only at the beginning and at the end of the piece. Surprisingly, the middle sections lie not near by any busy musical highways. The structure is fairly recognizable (atmospheric Space Fusion), the arrangements are transparent, and yet, there is something fascinating, which somewhat grasps my attention each time I revisit the composition. The only time that the band really falls down is on the last track, Metronome 7/8. The initial theme, set up by the playfully affirmative synthesizer passages flowing to the marching drums, is shamelessly repetitive, besides which it occupies most of the piece's space.
Conclusion.Despite some obvious flaws, there is plenty of highly enjoyable music on "Marine Menagerie", so I believe it's more than merely a good album overall. Recommended, above all to those keen on Art-Rock bordering on Jazz-Fusion or vice versa, which is the same and is quasi Jazz-Fusion in my understanding. I consciously didn't use the term Canterbury in the review, because I don't recognize the genres named just after the places that they have originated from. Just compare the avant-garde / free jazz of Soft Machine and the light fusion of Caravan and ask yourselves the question whether these so-different bands can be regarded as representatives of the same style. Or take French TV, which is usually listed within the same category, too. What has this RIO-related group, 'broadcasting' from the American state of Kentucky, to do with the Canterbury scene?

Analysis. Like a teenager, I have mentally cried 'Cool!' in my native language just after conquering a height named "Five Evolved From Nine". No, you needn't be a graduate in musical Alpinism to climb up this majestic musical Everest:-), unless you are a beginner. The album will immediately draw your attention, but you will have to have many happy returns to it to fully comprehend it. Does this sound good to you? I really hope so. Consisting of exclusively new compositions written in 1992, "Five Evolved From Nine" presents five long and four short tracks, none of which is a makeweight, regardless of what the title may suggest. Gone are traces of anyone's influences, the music appearing to be almost unbelievably fresh and unique, full of inspiration, expression, dynamism and drama. It would be pointless to use any direct comparisons in this case. Furthermore, I don't think I can use even relative ones anywhere but regarding the second composition. The opener (and the first short track), Villa Adriana, has a full-fledged full-band sound and can be viewed as a symphonic intro to its follow up, Two Orders of Image, which is the only track here constructed clearly in the fashion of classic Jazz-Fusion, with some certain resemblance to Brand X, Kenso and Side Steps, though revealing itself only on the structural level. The piece features some brilliant long improvised solos from saxophonist Hisashi Nagao (whose appearance on "Marine Menagerie" was only nominal), all four of the band members providing endless brilliant foils to each other, as everywhere on this album. Back to Hisashi Nagao: His hour of triumph is yet to come, on one of the further tracks, Shadow Picture, although I am certain that it's keyboardist Kikio Fujikawa who composed all the implied themes. Stonehenge, the track list counterpart of Two Orders of Image, isn't poor in improvisations either, but it's much more diverse and cohesive simultaneously, the arrangements being in a state of constant, yet always logical development (from a symphonic standpoint). To be short, it will not fail to please anyone into progressive music, and I mean above all those leaning towards Art-Rock. The wonderfully contrasting Ancient Museum is the alternation of almost clearly symphonic textures with those originating from jazz, the band with astonishing ease jumping from style to style, with no repeats of previously performed sections. The Valley of Lutha is similar, although divided into two distinctively contrasting parts, the seeming fragility of the music in the first section being perceptible almost physically. I believe almost all of the tracks on this album are masterworks, but Shadow Picture is just something marvelously incredible. I have no words to describe this wonderful musical fairytale, rising above any genre definitions. Please believe me, it will be a revelation for you, my experienced brothers and sisters in passion, regardless of your belonging to one or another genre. I am just bewitched by Shadow Picture; I can't stop playing it again and again, and I can't remember when I was so much pleased with one separate composition for the last time. As to the remaining three short tracks, they're also amazing, even though not as much as the longer ones. Fragments from the Pass and Little Wind are acoustic guitar pieces, and Seascape is a little concerto for piano, though these descriptions are incomplete, because each is a unique (and full-fledged) composition.
Conclusion. Unlike "Marine Menagerie", "Five Evolved from Nine" is a brilliant album, in every respect. Furthermore, it sounds like it is destined to fully reconcile symphonic and improvisational styles and, hence, to unite even the most inveterate adherents of corresponding genres, opening a whole new world for them, where the seemingly opposed harmonies exist just as one single whole. I wish Ain Soph to find their 'second wind' again and rejoice us with another new creation. Supremely recommended. Top-20-1993

This first release by Japanese band Ain Soph since the mid 90's is an interesting affair; at least for fans of this group.
7 tracks recorded in the 80's and one recorded in 2005, all of them live in the studio, will always add new dimensions to tunes familiar to the band's followers. And that the new recording is a new song will of course be of high interest for any fan.
The old numbers performed here comes as fusion in style, heavily spiced with symphonic keyboard layers very much like Camel in style. Some folk influences are to be found too, but the fusion style and symphonic additions are the dominating elements here.
The new tune takes on a more distinct fusion style; the keyboards on this tune underscoring the tune rather than dominating; the symphonic keyboard layers for the most part replaced with saxophone in the soundscape.
The tunes as such doesn't come across as very interesting though. Too repetitive for my personal taste, and lacking in nerve and tension. Still, fans of early Camel may find this release interesting, as well as fans of symphonic rock from the 70's in general. In particular those of them also listening to fusion, as well as appreciating skilled musicianship.
