"I feel like I could keep going on about how good Ghost Town Riot‘s Self-Titled is. Not in the typical sense, but in that every song has a depth and complexity that one listen-through doesn’t begin to give it justice. That is quite the loaded statement, I know, but take a look at “Intruder” and it’s subtle but progressive intro then nearly chaotic verse that follows. Trying to catch every part of instrumentation and lyrics is something that takes time and is well worth it. It is complex music that invites you into its world, sometimes eerie, but it never gets to be overwhelming either. For a 40 minute album, it says quite a lot about the band’s focus on intense melodies and complex storytelling.
“The Author” blends tense music with a complex story about an author trying find a different ending to stories he has already written and trying to understand him as a person. One of my favorite tracks is “Cheat” for it’s lyrics and style. It has an eerie air and heavy tones but the quick word-play make me latch on to it. “Forgive me if I’m tactless, but you’re nothing short of hapless. Your worthless tactics are becoming such a perfect practice.”
“The Man Who Knows” has one of the most intense beginning riffs on the album and once it stops, the song slows down and delivers its lyrics that catch you off guard. ”Strange Neighbor” is something fantastic for a closing track. It is the longest of the album and leaves you with “The mysteries of the universe are swirling in your eyes, like you’ve almost seen the answers…”
