Once and Future Kings make music that ranges from ethereal indie rock to psychedelic pop. OFK has been reincarnated once.Originally founded in Nashville, TN by vocalist/songwriter Jess Edison, vocalist/keys player Justin Henderson (a.ka. Justin Verted), and drummer Jason Hutchings, the lineup has evolved over the years due to life. The original trio jammed in a red-walled 5'x8' basement room in East Nashville. After eight months of writing and honing material, OFK played their first show at Springwater Supper Club with Bradley Schultz on bass. Bradley moved to Ohio to open a bar, and Josh Petty moved into the bass player spot. Their debut EP, Emergent Sea, was recorded with Jess Edison, Justin Verted, Jason Hutchings, and Josh Petty on bass. Danny Bedford produced the EP, but before the release, Josh took a new job that prevented him from continuing with OFK. As a result, David Banuelos took the bass reigns beginning in late 2007. He was an adept and talented addition to the OFK fabric. But by the summer of 2008, OFK learned that founding member Jason would be moving to Portland, and Dave had decided to move to New Mexico.

Conflicted about continuing the band, Jess Edison moved to Raleigh, NC for graduate school. After one year of being unplugged, Edison could no longer resist the collective aspect of musicmaking. He found Rush Enterline and expressed the desire to work on a recording project. Soon thereafter, it was clear that drums were necessary and Matt Austin joined in. But Edison's Craigslist ad had attracted a few more listeners, and one of them invited OFK to play Let Feedback Ring at Sadlack's. This was the first OFK show in the Triangle, but nonetheless the trio had already developed a concrete musical chemistry. Immediately after the first show, Matt Robinson joined in on bass, and several more shows followed in quick succession. Edison found the Triangle to be much more accepting and congenial than Nashville, and the Triangle returned this sentiment.
After the initial crash course and extensive show schedule, OFK decided to tone it down a bit in order to go through the typical development phase that bands go through. In the 10 months that followed, OFK played one show per month on average and worked on new songs in the intervening periods. By the one year mark, OFK had an EP they wanted to record. Meanwhile, Justin Verted was on a westward crosscountry road trip, and upon hearing about the coming record, he packed his backpack, grabbed his bedroll and music gear, and moved to Raleigh in order to be part of the record. OFK played shows as a five piece for a few months before Justin moved away. In the present, Once and Future Kings are preparing for the release of their "Dead Lions" EP this spring, and they are writing new songs for the future.
