The world of German electronic music can seem like a very backwards looking one. If the English music scene appears to practically worship at the altar of all things 1977, with endless documentaries explaining to those of us aged under 40 about how boring the mid 70s were in London and why punk rock changed history to save us from dismally anodyne disco pop, then anyone taking a new found interest in German music might find themselves equally confronted with the possibility that any innovation began and ended in Kraftwerks Kling Klang studios, and with Giorgio Moroder manipulating his Robotniks (and Donna Summer) from a windowless studio hidden under Banhof Zoo. This is, of course, untrue, but when a new band such as Camera are seen to make such obvious tribute towards bands of the German 1970s such as Cluster, Neu! and Harmonia, then it can seem as if they are purposefully making music specifically designed to reach an audience outwith their own immediate sphere, that of the elitist Krautrock buffs who will assiduously deconstruct their music down to its last waveform while deciding exactly which track sounds most like LA Dussseldorf. 80s musicians such as Andreas Doraus, Front 242 and Der Plan are rarely name checked, while Einsturzende Neubaten seem to belong to another tradition entirely.

But the rules are different in German music, and individuals such as Moebius, Ralph Hutter, Klaus Schulze and Edgar Froese enjoy reputations that aren’t exactly those of rock musicians in the English speaking world. Their work and that of many of their 60s and 70s contemporaries is given an artistic status which belongs more readily in galleries and cinemas than on the gig circuit. Camera are obviously very aware of this (they’ve already performed alongside Moebius and Neu!’s Michael Rother), and while in one sense they are viewed as a band able to continue the work of some of the now elder statesmen of the first wave of German electronic composition, they also know that if they’re going to do that succesfully then they can’t get too reverential or clinical in their approach to this. So, utilising live percussion and treating the studio as they would any other gig opportunity, Camera bring a defined energy and a range of material that encompasses full on post rock, hard edged synth dynamics, longer and more developed pieces, and while for the most part they remain within the framework laid down by those 70s electro pioneers, their combined talents and enthusiasm make ‘Radiate!’ a near compulsive listen.

Camera know that timing and a tactile awareness of the actual dynamics of their instrumentation are what can push their music beyond its usual confines. The live drumming brings in an added depth to the abrasive synth lines and even in their more reflective moments, on longer tracks such as “Lynch” and “RFID” there’s a definable tension in the background, with Camera prepared at any moment to shift their music into a frenzy that can occasionally recall the monomania of Atari Teenage Riot. Camera avoid going too far down Alec Empire’s Hardcore route (I saw one of his live shows, and it was certainly memorable), but they also disregard entirely the studied urbanity of Tarwater : next to Radiate!, Tarwater’s 2011 Inside The Ships is practically a jazz album.
What gives Radiate! its most interesting qualities is that it’s the sound of a band testing their own abilities. Most of Camera’s live shows so far have been the spontaneous open air performances that they’ve established their reputation with, and this approach is carried over into their recorded work, and it’s possible to hear these committedly outdoor musicians finding the studio actually limiting their music and playing. I could oversimplify this review by saying that what Camera really sound like is Neu! with Scorpions Michael Schenker on guitar, but that wouldn’t go even halfway towards describing what kind of band they really are, and would only make me sound like the kind of non-German Krautrock bore who would probably disregard Camera entirely until they’ve worked with Brian Eno on their third album or something. There’s far more to Radiate! than a mere recycling of Camera’s influences, and they and their music deserve a more objective hearing, one that puts aside the preconceptions that just about everyone in the English speaking world falls back on when the words electronica and German are mentioned in the same sentence.
