When recreating the sound of '70s analogs, today's digital 'boards are well-stocked with enough sampled
waveforms to enthrall the casual listener, but usually there's a little something missing. It might too
little warmth, too much brightness, and not enough of that good ol' grit, that sonic dirt, but trained ears
often recognize the emulation. And sometimes the music is so good it makes no sense to give a hoot
(check out the CD by Eccentric Orbit for more fashionably analog headway).
But let us quote analog advocate Erik Norlander: "There's nothing like the real thing, baby!"
And the duo that is Zombi subscribes to the same mindset: every piece of synth gear employed by
bassist~synthesist Steve Moore and drummer~synthesist A.E. Paterra is a true analog unit issued
between 1980-1985, some of the last before the digital revolution pulled a fast one. Zombi is in
love with that time-tested Goblin and Synergy sound, circa 1975-1982, and Moore and Paterra do an
exceptional job of "musical remote viewing." Goblin and Synergy (along with Fabio Frizzi and Tangerine
Dream, two other soundtrack icons) defined their niches in "giallo rock" and electronic prog, respectively,
delivering darkly organic ululations and undulations and an undisputably wholesale elegance that is lacking
in many a derivative work. This isn't the case with Cosmos — along with select others, Zombi is the real
deal.

Based in Zombieland itself, Pittsburgh, the duo draws directly upon the legacies of Romero and Argento.
The short "Orion" is a thunderous track with jackhammer drum rolls and megalithic triads supporting a
VCO-laden infrastructure — set on repeat play, its melody will linger for days. "Cetus" plays off more
of a steady beat, and the looped Moog bass and Juno lead make it a fine piece with a "chase" feel. One
of two tracks exclusively by Moore, "Cassiopeia" is (also) propelled by a robust soundloop and programmed
rhythms; eventually, the track dissolves into a soupy bog that begs for a ladle. The first long piece,
"Serpens" commences with ominous strains of filter-modulated washes and a pulsating one-note bass pattern.
At 4-1/2 minutes in, the vibe coasts toward a slightly more neutral plateau, topped with a wonderfully wiry
right-hand lead of the sort Larry Fast would employ. The tempo begins an upshift, following the
upward-transposed arpeggiated chords before a whole note is held for several bars and modulated back into
oblivion. Thus concludes Act I.

The second Act is signaled by the subdued intro of "Gemini," substantiated by background darkness & drones
circa [Tangerine Dream's] Encore & Sorcerer, and a melodic sensibility worthy of Kitaro. Moore's Fender
Jazz bass joins the skins to heat up the mercury around halfway through. A euphoric number, "Andromeda"
is another Moore solo that prefaces the epic Frizzi-esque closer — "Taurus." Like a long lost outtake from
one of Lucio Fulci's Zombie films, the unwavering quarter-note kick-pulse of "Taurus" and its tonal
pastiche works more than enough magic to transport us back to times of gnarled latex and animal organs
substituted for human. The impenetrable briar mass of electronics creeps forth like an invading zombie squad,
slowly infiltrating even the safest of spaces until the protagonist (you, the listener) finally realizes his
or her last words will be..."Bon Appetit."

2004 - Cosmos

2006 - Surface To Air

Bassist-synthesist Steve Moore and Drummer-synthesist A.E. Paterra — that's Zombi to you fellas — have been touring their rumps off for the last year, playing American clubs as both warm-up act and headliner, so they must have recorded Surface To Air when we weren't looking. Or something. The Digitalis EP even preceded the new album by a month, so that's some work.

Zombi's lean, mean sound is back, and with beefy analog sounds complemented by bass riffing and power drumming approximates a Tangram-era Tangerine Dream style with dynamic, not locked, rhythmic structures. Yes, the Dream had a real drummer on albums like Cyclone and Force Majeure but there was a general adherence to four-on-the-floor and static tempi. Not so with A.E. Paterra, who quickly serves up the Peart-meets-Powell fills on the leadoff track. The two short tracks come first, visions of desolate craters and asteroid belts descending on "Challenger Deep" via said fills, a smokin' bass lead, and huge analog strings. Yes, that sustained chord goes on for a spell but without its foundation the track would probably sound half as cool. Or perhaps eighty-seven per cent as cool. Either way, a fantastic opener.

Punchy synthbass and 4-string electric bass are alternately dialled up on "Digitalis," "Legacy," and the title track, bolstered by sterling sawtooth-string pads that evoke otherworldly vistas (for the record, only true blue analog synths are employed, no "virtual analog" or softsynths or any of that nonsense). In spite of its rigorist blueprint and length, the nine-minute "Legacy" never bores; in fact, the general focus on huge analog sounds, sweetly minimalist melodies and warm-blooded drumming tends to make what Zombi do seem novel, though they're far from the first duo to do this sort of thing. But they've certainly got some of the best sounds around. Oh? Mellotrons? Er, doesn't seem like it, though there are strings and choirs in the epic finale "Night Rhythms" that sound close enough! Speaking of, "Night Rhythms" parallels "Taurus" from the previous full-length in its expansive make-up, taking us through Frizzi-esque, Schulzian and (naturally) Goblinoid spheres, Paterra igniting nicely frenetic Copeland-esque patterns and Moore cutting through the mix with a plucky, chunky bass.

Well, it looks like Mark Shreeve's "powersynth" days are long behind him, and Motoi Sakuraba is still closer to the classical-prog keyboard-trio end of the spectrum, so Zombi's the beverage of choice when it comes to an edgy rock & EM hybrid. Mighty tasty. And for the record, Surface To Air is made available nationally so your favorite local indie vendor, as well as larger chains, should stock it. Relapse Records will no doubt do similarly with Cosmos.

Producing work that is epic in concept, sound, and artistic approach, Steve Moore and A.E. Paterra, the masterminds and multi-instrumentalists behind Zombi, have re-imagined the architecture of progressive rock and dynamic instrumentals—carving a niche in underground music distinctly their own.

The band’s signature sound, achieved using only electric bass, drums, and a collection of analog synthesizers, is deceptively lush considering its two man skeleton crew ensemble. Moore’s bass playing and meticulous synthesizer programming interacts seamlessly with Paterra’s controlled, precision drumming—as if each man is anticipating his counterpart’s next move. Punctuated by Moore and Paterra’s seasoned songwriting skills, each Zombi song—whether grand in design like “Night Rhythms” from the band’s forthcoming LP or powerful and driving like “Orion,” the opening track on Cosmos—is entirely autonomous and true to the duo’s creative vision.

“I bring a lot of skeletal ideas to the table—basslines, sequences, and drum parts. Steve will then craft them into complete songs,” Paterra explains. “There is a musical trust that exists between us that allows for full exploration of all ideas. We are perfectionists, sometimes to a fault, but I think it is a quality that lends itself well to the music.”

“We share the same goal, which is simply to create music that we enjoy—it’s rather selfish,” Moore adds. “We have a similar list of influences as well, both of us having grown up listening to progressive and classic rock. So when it comes time to write, we're basically completing each other’s thoughts.”

Following the success of Cosmos—Zombi’s critically-acclaimed debut album for Relapse Records—and a series of national tours with artists like Dillinger Escape Plan, The Fucking Champs, Red Sparowes, Panthers, and Breather Resist, Moore and Paterra regrouped in Chicago to begin work on their next full-length album.

“Surface To Air is a genuinely progressive album: bigger, denser, and more dynamic than anything we've done before,” Moore says. “It’s still dark and cinematic, but without being kitschy like some of our earlier releases.”

“The album is an accurate representation of who we are and where we are headed as a band,” Paterra adds. “It is the culmination of a style and sound we've been honing since our inception, but it also puts us in a new direction, one that I am excited to explore.”

Larger in scope and sound, Surface To Air is an evolutionary album, anchored by the distinct melodic and technically complex sound Zombi has become known for, but more mature and forward-thinking in its overall conceptual approach. While the track listing may at first appear lean at a mere five songs, the attentive listener will soon realize that Moore and Paterra have composed and assembled more than 40 minutes of emotive, dynamic, multi-layered music—making Surface To Air a magnum opus in its own right.

Informed by the music and boundary-pushing work ethic of icons like Genesis, Tangerine Dream, Van Halen, and Pink Floyd, Moore and Paterra rely just as much on inspiration from the past as they do on their own skill and musical knowledge during the songwriting process. On Surface To Air, the integrity of tracks like “Challenger Deep” with its powerful, driving bassline, and the mysterious mounting tension of “Digitalis” are indisputable evidence of Zombi’s artistic growth and allegiance to producing a diverse and progressive body of work. “Legacy,” however, sidesteps, revealing a more introspective direction in Moore and Paterra’s work, while the album’s title track, “Surface To Air,” opens with a frantically-paced and hypnotic synthesizer-laden melody.

Experimenting with a vast new sound, Zombi proves that charging forward with an expansive vision can open doors to an entirely new realm. While Moore and Paterra still draw inspiration from the horror genre when composing film scores, a broader range of influences—as well as a desire to push the boundaries of what they’ve already accomplished—now informs the material for their albums. Whether you’re an adventurous listener, diehard fan, or skeptical observer, delving into the latest chapter of Zombi’s prolific and ever-evolving work will never disappoint. - Matthew Newton
