Bio:

It must be said from the outset that the music on the all-instrumental "Lethean" is highly unique and doesn't bear any analogies. Basically, it represents an amazing three guitar-based Art-Rock and is the product of performance of the Lethean quartet, while guest musicians (see above) bring in it elements of the other genres - on those tracks that they're involved in. The definitely jazzy improvisations of saxophone play quite a significant role in the arrangements on the opening track of the album, and thus, Subinconsio Telefonico is about a guitar Art-Rock with pronounced elements of Jazz-Fusion. The beginning and the ending of Alchimista (2) feature only dramatic passages of violin, so the music here represents a guitar Art-Rock with elements of Symphonic Art-Rock. Lethe and Pensieri di Paglia (4 & 5) were performed without the participation of guests and are about a guitar Art-Rock with elements of Prog-Metal. The solos of two electric guitars and those of bass are always virtuosi and cross each other by quite unusual trajectories to the accompaniment of a very diverse drumming. Both of the band's guitarists use various guitar pedals, so the sound of these compositions is practically as rich as that of those performed with the larger number of instruments. A brilliant acoustic Symphonic Art-Rock done by the laws of Classical Music is presented on the remaining pieces: Marmo di Luna and Autumno (3 & 6), both of which were performed without the rhythm section. The first of them represents the constantly developing interplay between passages and solos of acoustic guitar and solos flute, and the latter consists passages of classical guitar and those of violin. Most of the arrangements on the album are in the state of constant development, and nevertheless, they always remain coherent and beautiful. "Lethean" is one of the most original guitar-based Art-Rock albums I've ever heard. It is filled with a truly inspired, quite an extraordinary music and doesn't contain any weak spots. Highly recommended.

Lethean, is a new instrumental progrock group coming from Italy, moving away from the traditional syphonic roots of the more notorious Italian bands, they are leaning more into a Psych meets RIO approach, this may seem like an odd mix, and it is. Some songs come across in the Ozric Tentacles style, and others are have an unusual Area/DFA/DEM mixture. The band is a four piece, with no keyboards, dual guitars, and some guest musicians are contributing on violin, sax and flute. You can hardly notice the absence of keyboards, as the guitarists utilize and arsenal of devices and sound mutilators, that are every bit a psychedelic as most any keyboards could do. Some songs are featuring long jams, much like Ozrics, others are much more composed, perhaps like DFA, but not as complex. The last song shows yet another more contemplative side, offering acoustic guitars, performing a clasically inspired piece that allows the violinist to carry the melody throughout. The overall vibe here is progrock, the guitars never "show off" and remain tonally in the progrock, vein, never metal. Anyone who likes Ozrics, DFA, and bands that are remotely in this style categorically, could appreciate this cd.

The record company describes this all instrumental Italian band as ‘Anekdoten with a violin but without their dark influences’. Just at a time when Anekdoten switches towards another mainframe these guys come up with music from Anekdoten’s back garden ? After listening to this album I don’t think they come anywhere near the Anekdoten sound whether their current sound or their more vintage early years. Personally I don’t like saxophone too much because it tends to steer the music immediately towards a heavy jazz feel. The opening track therefor is totally different than the more melodic, symphonic second track ‘Alchimista’. The classical violin here soon gives way to a more ‘funky’ approach also including an electric wah-wah guitar. The song evolves towards pure hypnotic rock based on loud guitars. As happens so much with new bands they tend to deliver such a wide scope of music losing originality along the way. With ‘Marmo di luna’ the band concentrates on the pure acoustic nature of the music ending in authentic folk.
Throughout this debut guitars will be the focal point helped out by guests on violin, flute and sax to make the music more interesting. The actual band is based around two guitarists who complement each other’s style but sometimes I miss the sound of keyboards to make the sound much fuller. ‘Lethe’ contains some nice moments but as a whole it really has no structure moving from one style into another without meaning. With ‘Pensieri di Paglia’ the band even introduces some spacerock movements which again is highlighted by the use of wah-wah. Again a completely different atmosphere with the dramatic ‘Autumno’ which once again is based on acoustic guitar accompanied by violin.
First of all this is a very short album and secondly after listening to their own compositions I still don’t know what Lethean music stands for. Every song is much different and I can’t see the direction this band is taking. Also forget the name Anekdoten as there’s no way you can compare the music. Anekdoten is lightyears ahead of these guys who urgently need to discuss what they want to obtain in the music industry.
