Wonderland

Wonderland are one of those 1960's German beat bands (along with The Rattles and The German Bonds) that were key to the development of the roots of the Hamburg Krautrock scene. They were not an essential act that you should seek-out, but an important piece of pre-history.

Formed by original The Rattles musicians Achim Reichel (vocals, guitar, bass, keyboards) and Frank Dostal (vocals, organ, bass), Wonderland were chiefly a single's band, who played a creative pop music, occasionally breaking-out from the norm, but of little interest as far as Krautrock is concerned. The rest of the band consisted of: Dicky Tarrach (drums), Helmuth Franke (bass, banjo, sitar) and Les Humphries (piano, organ, clarinet, saxophone). After Les departed to form his famous vocal group the Les Humphries Singers, he was replaced by Claus Robert Kruse, and Helmuth was replaced by Kalle Trapp. The two albums that exist are both largely singles collections, along with other session material.

After a "psychedelic reawakening", Achim & Co. reinvented themselves as Wonderland Band, becoming pioneers of the new Hamburg Krautrock underground.

Wonderland Band

These originated as Wonderland, a 1960's beat/pop group formed by original The Rattles musicians Achim Reichel and Frank Dostal.

Later, as "Wonderland Band" the music changed entirely to a notably Zappa inspired progressive, with elements of satire. Musically WONDERLAND BAND NO. 1 also rode close to the introspective moments of ATOM HEART MOTHER era Pink Floyd and strangely also there's a hint of early Jade Warrior. All this is coincidental, and intrinsically part of the development of Achim Reichel as an original Krautrock talent, notably in that much of it is fronted by those uniquely eclectic Frank Dostal songs that were later to be developed on Reichel's "AR+Machines" series of albums. The spirit of invention of it all amounted to a uniquely odd and highly creative album.

NO.1 was aptly Achim's first Krautrock exercise, the start of a highly creative adventure, which would snowball after discovering the echo guitar, and the wonderful DIE GRÜNE REISE. ~ the crack in the cosmic egg
