When the publication of his second novel Sometimes a Great Notion in 1964 required his presence in New York, Kesey, Neal Cassady, and others in a group of friends they called the "Merry Pranksters" took a cross-country trip in a school bus nicknamed "Furthur" or Further. This trip, described in Tom Wolfe's The Electric Kool-Aid Acid Test (and later in Kesey's own screenplay "The Further Inquiry") was the group's attempt to create art out of everyday life. In New York, Cassady introduced Kesey to Jack Kerouac and to Allen Ginsberg, who in turn introduced them to Timothy Leary.

This Album consists of a studio recording session, from San Francisco in 1965. The Pranksters took over the place early in the evening and finally had it wired to their satisfaction early in the morning. The "Band" kept getting higher as the recording progressed. attempting to enact an acid test within the recording studio environment. Seventy-four minutes of readings, poetry, music and mayhem from the archives of Ken Kesey and Ken Babbs. After its release as a 1000-copy limited-edition LP, it was repeatedly bootlegged. Also on this CD is the only other "professional" studio recording by the Pranksters, called "Red White and Blue Meet Black." This is an invitation for the Hells Angels to join the Pranksters in La Honda for a....bash. Editing, dubbing and mixing were done while hiding in Mexico later that year. Slated to be released in 1967, the record company got scared, so it sat in the archives.

RED WHITE AND BLUE MEET BLACK (THE PRANKSTERS AND HELLS ANGELS) is one of the best recordings we ever made. Done in 1966 in a recording studie in Sand Francisco, it tells the story of the Vietnam protest in Berkeley and the scene between the angels and the protestors and the pranksters and Allen Ginsberg's intervention.

THE SOUND CITY ACID TEST was recorded in 1966 in a studio with the Pranksters spending the whole night wiring the place and waiting for the grateful dead to show up. This came out on vinyl and you can still see some of the knockoffs around. Good stuff.
