End of status report
NECRONOMICON - not to be confused with the thrash metal band of the same name, still appearing on stage today - were founded in Aachen in the summer of 1970 and played rough progressive rock with lyrics full of criticism, written in German language by Norbert Breuer and his friend Helmut Harun. They finally, however, switched over to English lyrics. With the present CD, as yet unreleased recordings of this late period are now available for the first time. The group is named after the book by the American horror and science-fiction author H. P. Lovecraft, in which all horrors of this world are said to be written down. In 1972, Necronomicon released their then only LP "Tips zum Selbstmord" ["Advice for suicide"], in a skilfully designed multifold-out cover. Today, the LP is a collector's item in high demand and is traded at about €1000 in mint condition. One should, however, beware of counterfeits. There is a detailed band history to be found in the booklet to the CD edition of "Tips zum Selbstmord" (Garden of Delights CD 094). Therefore at this point only a few facts concerning the last years of Necronomicon.
At the end of 1973, Dieter Ose (*02/09/1953 in Gemünd) joined the band, taking over the keyboards from Fistus Dickmann, and founding member Gerd Libber (*1948 in Hoengen) was back on bass. Walter Sturm (*08/08/1948 in Aachen) had temporarily quit the band in order to play with Rufus Zuphall, also from Aachen; he returned to Necronomicon, however, in 1974. A new repertoire - now with German lyrics - was developed. There were songs referring to social behaviour or the Vietnam War in the typical Necro-nomiconian way. There were also musical versions of Berthold Brecht literature (taken from: "Die Geschichten des Herrn K." ["The tales of Mr. K."]). And they staged pure instrumentals, too. Musically, the group had developed considerably - not least thanks to Dieter Ose -, and the music became significantly more complex and varied than that to be heard on "Tips zum Selbstmord". The formerly very long tracks were later shortened without mercy. In 1990, extant recordings from gigs were released on the excellently made quadruple LP "Vier Kapitel" ["four chapters"] (Little Wing of Refugees LW 1010/1011/1012/1013), for which collectors meanwhile pay €150. The third of the four LPs contains "Tips zum Selbstmord", the three other ones consist of recordings from 1971, which had not been released up until then, and of the repertoire from 1974, the whole of it bound as a book, similar perhaps to the first edition of the double LP "Living in the past" by Jethro Tull. As can be imagined, there are to be made concessions concerning the sound quality of the additional tracks, even if they have been remastered; they are recordings which weren't originally intended for release. On the 2004 CD edition of "Tips zum Selbstmord" on Garden of Delights, four long bonus tracks known from the 1990 quadruple LP: one from chapter one (1971) and three tracks from chapter four (1974), have been added to the titles of the original LP, taken from the master tape. With the latest state-of-the-art technical equipment, these additional tracks were now dehissed, renewed, and the original mono recordings were distributed to two channels best possible; the basis for all this was provided by the tracks on digital tape, which had already been remastered by Little Wing of Refugees.
In 1976, there was the first split of Necronomicon. They had at last expanded their compositions to such an extent that the audience was over-demanded and stayed away from their gigs. The band thus played in halls that were almost empty, which the artists amongst themselves called "paid rehearsals". Walter Sturm, Harald Bernhard, and Dieter Ose, however, couldn't accept this ending and eventually continued the group under its old name. Bernd Oppitz was taken into the group to become the new man on bass. They developed a completely new repertoire, now writing lyrics in English -producing both their own words as well as setting English poetry to music. The music became more melodious and, at the same time, gathered virtuosity, while it was significantly tightened. Keyboard (Dieter Ose's original Hammond sound with Leslie Cabinet) and guitar have been harmonised to perfection; there are a lot of passages in which both instruments form a duet. As Dieter Ose was a good guitarist, too, they could even develop pure guitar compositions. The words now, however, widely lacked their former tartness and viciousness; they had taken a more poetical direction. They were sung by Walter Sturm and Dieter Ose in turn. With this line-up of four, Necronomicon continued making music up until 1981. Only then they split for good, basically for professional reasons, and also because at last they had simply lived too far away from each other.
A person substantially influencing and forming the musical development of Necronomicon was Dieter Ose who unfortunately died suddenly and much too early on August 24th, 2007. Not least in memory of him, with this CD the long considered release of Necronomicon's repertoire since 1976 has been materialized. During their active period, the group had made good demo recordings of their tracks. Additionally, there were some relatively good recordings of gigs, all of which had taken place in the Aachen area. On the CD both kinds of recordings are included, which allows a representative insight into the musical development and live performance of Necronomicon's last line-up. To be precise, the first ten tracks were recorded in the rehearsal room, and the last three ones at a gig taking place in the Herzogenrath youth centre near Aachen in 1976. All of the lyrics have been written by the artists themselves, only the text of "The donkey" was taken from a poem by the British author Gilbert Keith Chesterton (1874-1936). The one poster that has now been chosen for the cover of the CD on hand shows a joker with a pen, referring to their tartly lyrics, especially in the first half of the 1970s.
What are the former Necronomicon members doing today? Walter Sturm studied psychology, has meanwhile become a professor of neuropsychology in Aachen and plays the guitar only at home. Bernd Oppitz is working in the information technology business and covers songs of Genesis with his group Invisible Touch. Harald Bernhard is working as a music teacher and performed with the group Victory of the Better Man. Dieter Ose ran his father's draper's shop, played in a cover band, and died unexpectedly from heart failure on August 24th, 2007.

An entry on Wikipedia, however, doesn't exist yet.
