Heron (1970)

Heron's self-titled debut LP was mild, drummerless British folk-rock with the rural/pastoral feel common to many early-'70s records in the style. That pastoral feel, in this particular case, might have been in part deliberate; the record was actually recorded in a field by the River Thames, and though the sound quality is very good, you can occasionally hear some birds and faint ambient outdoor noises. The music is very friendly, acoustic guitar-based stuff that, as improbable as such a blend may seem, is a little like a combination of Simon & Garfunkel with the Incredible String Band, though there aren't many of the weirder elements of the latter. You might also cite the most acoustic and folky Paul McCartney ballads of the late '60s and early '70s (à la "Blackbird") and the harmonies of Crosby, Stills & Nash as less prominent influences. Some organ, piano, and accordion add a little depth to what's essentially an acoustic folk base. In common with a lot of records with obvious points of comparison to famous acts, however, the songs themselves aren't nearly as distinguished as those of the artists mentioned earlier in this review. That doesn't mean it's without its pluses, however. It's a fresh and youthful, if naïve, effort, with "Upon Reflection" being both the most memorable track and the one that is most reminiscent of early Simon & Garfunkel.

Twice as Nice & Half the Price (1971)

This second Heron album from 1972 was originally released as a double album at the price of one; hence the title.

The album shows a greater variety of musical styles than the 1970 debut album. Still it's the acoustic folk-style that's predominant, mixed with some more rocking tunes. Most of the album was recorded out in the open outside a Devon country cottage, which gives the album an unique atmosphere.

Their songwriting is even more convincing here than on their debut. Their have 2 excellent songwriters in Gerald T. Moore and Roy Apps ( who is still with the band ).

Here on their early records it's Moore who is shining the most. His songs "My Turn to Cry", "Minstrel and the King", "The Devil" and "Big A" are simply outstanding. Roy Apps' strongest contributions here are probably "Take Me back Home" and "Your Love and Mine". Another favourite out mine is their charming version of Woody Guthrie's "The Great Dust Storm".

A shame that a lot of people are not aware that the band is still together and recording fine new material from time to time, released on their own Relaxx label.

Roy Apps has once stated that the album probably ought to have been cut down to a single album; maybe . . but it would have been extremely hard to pick out the tracks that would have to go!

This album is highly recommendable!!

It all began in 1967. Maidenhead was a hotbed of indifference, and young people had nowhere to go – so the Dolphin folk club was born. Poetry, music, discussion, frantic antics, drugs and sex...
Folk music was a natural magnet to songwriters and performers who had little experience, but lots of enthusiasm.
Fans of the Incredibles, Dylan and the like, their songwriting talent soon started to appear.
Martin Hayward and GT Moore cross paths with Heron at. Maidenhead folk club, Windsor College etc. Messing about with penny-whistles, flutes, violins, half a bongo - their experiments with sound all lead to a deal with Dawn Label. Heron becomes Roy, Tony and GT.
Steve Jones – accordion in hand (it’s too loud man!) - joins to rehearse at Appleford in Berks, and record Bob Dylan's "Hobo" as single at Pye studios.Heron don’t enjoy the studio experience – everyone too “fragile” creatively to cope - so decide to record only in fields! "HERON" DNLS 3010 the album is born...

LP is a runaway failure, so compound problem by recording a double album for the price of one - with session pals Terry Gittings and Mike Finesilver. Band loses impetus – joins Shusha (minus Steve but plus Martin)

Time passes - the rest of the world think it’s all over – but what do they know?
Late 70’s early 80’s Heron (plus Steve minus Martin) teams up with Terry Clarke to gig folk clubs and Elephant Fair (elephants do forget...)Record new cassette – for promotion and sale. "Open up the Road" General drift from GT Moore, leading to gigs with Big Tom Robinson. This particular line up leads to recording at Steve’s studio – before it closes –a new collection based on some gig songs – “Hystorical” 1991. More quiet spells. Terry leaves to follow solo career. Enthusiasm wanes – gigs drop to one or two a year – mainly West Dean College

Fast forward a few years….
Holiday to Black Dog results in trip down memory lane – “getting it together again” and reliving the ’72 experience with new member Gerry Power to produce not only 30 songs old and new, but also a video documentary.
