Morild biography
MORILD is a symphonic prog band from Trondheim, Norway . They were formed in 2004 by Nils Larsen, Alexander Holand Salgado and Odd-Roar Bakken. The band members were a part of the band ADVENTURE but opted to leave and form MORILD. Before this the band had many pseudonyms including CONTRABAND, PLIGRIM, and HOME OF STORMS. ADVENTURE continued with Odd-Roar who has remained a musical partner with Nils over 30 years. John Anders Troset joined MORILD in early 2008 and has a strong vocal delivery that enhances the music. Odd-Roar and John Anders sung in the same choir, which brought new light to the compositions of the band.

The name of the band was derived, according to members, from "a light created by algae in water, in ancient times an omen from deep waters for fierce storms to come."

The band are influenced by the legendary Andy Latimer from CAMEL, Ian Anderson from JETHRO TULL, Kerry Livgren from KANSAS, Ken Hensley from URIAH HEEP, as well as PROCOL HARUM and MIKE OLDFIELD. The band members listen to traditional music and church music such as BJORN J:SON LINDH, and PEKKA POIOLA, TRANSATLANTIC, THE FLOWER KINGS, ELP, and Norwegian prog such as HOST, RUPHUS and AUNT MARY. The band are inspired and inject elements of these artists into their albums.

Despite the influences, MORILD have a unique sound, a specific mood that is distinctly Norwegian which "automatically colors the songs with the landscape and scenery that we have grown up with. There's a melancholy someplace hidden here, a kind of Scandinavian way, which you find folk and church music, to use the shifting pattern of minor and major keys and chords," recently pointed out in an interview.

Band members stated that, "MORILD is all about speaking to the soul and heart, rather than the cold brain. The music is not calculated, it's rather warm and with a strong melody line inside all those twists and turns. It is what comes natural for us, and that's how it must be. Music is all about passion and dedication; it's all about sharing a bit of your soul with sisters and brothers."

The music on the new debut double CD, Time To Rest, should appeals to fans of symphonic prog with all the features expected of the genre; a mixture of elements from different genres, intricate time signatures, reflective intelligent lyrics, a non commercial approach, lush keyboards that sound like symphonic strings, and extended songs that focus on musical virtuosity.

Formed in 2007 in Trondheim Norway, Morild is four piece outfit that plays a wonderful brand of symphonic progressive rock that is combined with a distinctly melancholic folk influence. Comprised of John Anders Troset (vocals), Nils Larsen (bass), Alex Salgado (drums) and Odd-Roar Bakken (guitars / keyboards) their debut self financed album Time To Rest, is an auspicious and ambitious double CD release that is chock full of lush keyboard passages, introspective melodies and superbly crafted arrangements.

The absolutely majestic opening number "All I Wanted (The Whale Song)" definitely sets the tone for the remainder of the music that follows. This thirteen minute epic composition brilliantly weaves together a plethora of exquisitely vintage sounding keyboard passages, ranging from huge Hammond organ swells, delicate piano textures and splashes of shimmering synth solos. It's skillfully blended together with some stunning acoustic folk melodies which are augmented by the playing of guest flautist Mari Haug Lund. Based on the true story of a whale that ran aground in the river Thames in London, Troset recounts the experience told through the eyes of the whale, and his warm, heartfelt vocal delivery is the perfect match for this musically diverse composition. Other highlights on the fifty minute first disc include the multi-faceted & constantly shifting arrangements on the instrumental title track as well as a couple of superbly crafted, extended numbers "Circus" and "Early This Morning (Christmas Song)" to close things out. In my opinion both of these songs are wonderful examples of the songwriting genius of Larsen and Bakken. Of the two "Circus" is a harder edged track that features plenty of Bakken's muscular guitar work and melodic solos, while "Early This Morning" has a softer sounding arrangement to accompany the poignant message of the lyrics.

Disc two begins with the instrumental "Apus Apus" which quickly shifts into gear via the warm, organic tones of Bakken's organ, which is once again interspersed with some inspired and spacey sounding synth solos. From there it's straight into yet another elaborate track as the thirteen minute "Two Glasses" takes the listener through a myriad of intricate time changes, wonderfully orchestrated melodies and some downright scorching solos from guest guitarist Hans Kristofferson. The disc concludes with the three part tour de-force "The Slave Ship". Clocking in at close to thirty minutes this suite certainly has to be the most challenging and complex music on all of Time To Rest. Of course the challenge when composing a track of this length is to find a way to keep the listener completely engaged for the full duration of the song. Well there's no cause for concern here as the band effortlessly pulls it off by never allowing the arrangements to sit still for too long, so the listener is always kept on their toes so to speak. To be honest my personal threshold for extended pieces of music is probably somewhere around the fifteen to twenty minute mark, so I have to say that I was pleasantly surprised at how well the guys in Morild were able to keep me focused from beginning to end. This speaks volumes about not only the songwriting talents of Larsen / Bakken, but I think it also says a lot about the unique qualities of each musician in Morild and what they bring to the table both individually and collectively.

Time To Rest is a truly magnificent and captivating musical statement from beginning to end, which certainly isn't an easy feat considering that the total running time here is around one hundred minutes. That in itself is a worthy accomplishment, but when you also consider the fact that Morild are operating entirely on an independent level, and creating stellar music that can easily sit alongside today's more established progressive rock bands, well that just might be their most impressive accomplishment right there. I have no doubt we'll be hearing more from these guys in the not too distant future. Basically if you love progressive rock in any shape or fashion, then you should definitely check out Time To Rest. This is one that is definitely going to be on my top ten list for 2010.

Morild is a relatively new name in the Norwegian progressive rock scene. They have been around since 2007 and “Time to Rest” is their first double CD album. As these 4 men stated in the press info of the album, their music blends elements of melancholy, the spirit of Nordic folk, and British progressive rock. All of this is true; throughout this record there is surely an omnipresent feeling of melancholy, which is mostly carried by the vocal harmonies and a variety of keyboards-related stuff.

As I mentioned above, this album is 2 disc edition divided into 11 songs with a total duration of over 100 minutes, which is what amazes me about the release. Why? Well to put it simply, most bands don’t put so much on their very first album.

The main instrument on this record is the hammond organ, played by Odd-Roar Bakken, who also holds all guitar duties. It’s evident that he’s influenced by Rick Wakeman, Ken Hensley and Peter Bardens, who have all certainly influenced the sound of this record. The guitars are actually my biggest complaint about this album, however. The sound of them are kinda poor and messy, and I have to admit that I thought drums will be problematic, concerning the fact the album has been recorded in home studio, “in the smallest of all small rooms, beneath the garage floor.” Thankfully, my fears were unfounded. The term “virtuosity” has been a synonym for progressive rock for a while, but this release is mostly calm and I would label it as a “melancholic virtuosity”.

To conclude, these guys from Trondheim show through this album that they have the knowledge and potential to make something good. At least, “Time to Rest” is far from able to be categorized as a “hobby album”, it surely needs to be listened and is not one of those “skip-over” releases. Give this album a chance and let the music speak to your heart, rather than your brain!

P.S.
Поклонникам Camel, Jethro Tull, Procol Harum and Mike Oldfield - однозначно. Рекомендую приобрести этот двойник на www.mals.ru
