VARIATIONS ON A DREAM, by England's Pineapple Thief, is a solid example of my belief that there is still much of value being done in the field of "progressive" music. (I will leave the exact classification of this excellent album to the listener, because it transcends ready categorization.)

Different critics hear differing influences here, but I agree with prior Archives reviewer Maani that singer/songwriter/guitarist Bruce Soord's laid-back voice evokes that of Smashing Pumpkins' Billy Corgan. The music itself is dominated by keyboards and rhythmic, jangly guitars, and sounds to me somewhat like a cross between the Cure (their lush, sadder side) and Coldplay. (In fact, fans of either band should enjoy this CD.)

Influences and comparisons aside, Pineapple Thief have herein released a recording of understated and -- as the title implies -- dreamy beauty. The overall mood of the album tends heavily toward the melancholy: this is not an album to get you "pumped." What this accessible and unobtrusive music is ideal for, however, is relaxing. I especially enjoy "VARIATIONS" in the early morning with my coffee, or when reading in the evening. I find that each of the ten tracks has something to recommend it, but my particular favourites include the lovely "We Subside" (which opens the album with a cello-like keyboard theme that reminds me of a Strauss waltz); "The Bitter Pill" (which features haunting piano from Adrian Soord); the powerful, guitar-driven "Sooner or Later" (a lament for the fated breakup of a relationship); "Part Zero" (a longer number that contains what is perhaps the disc's best guitar work -- somewhat reminiscent of Roger Gilmour's); and the somber "Keep Dreaming," with a chorus in the form of an impassioned plea to "Keep breathing -- your soul is not leaving." (Anyone who has ever kept a vigil at a dying loved-one's bedside will likely be moved by this heart-felt musical "prayer.") It is the closing track, however, that is my overall favorite on the disc: "Remember Us" is a sixteen minute, multi-layered opus which entreats the listener to "remember us when we've gone" and ably achieves its goal.

In conclusion, this CD represents convincing evidence that all is not yet lost in the prevailing climate of pop-idol clones and thug-rap. The days may be musically "dark" for many, yet Pineapple Thief's VARIATIONS ON A DREAM offers "a light in the darkness" that those weary of what they usually hear on their radios would be well advised to give an ear to.

The Pineapple Thief always amused me with their fairly uplifting songs. Being a mixture of pop music and prog instrumentation, the songs might fool the average listener to think they are not listening to anything special at first, but after repeated listens one notices the various layers of sounds and melodies.

As I mentioned earlier on I always have the feeling that the music presented here is uplifting. If you take a deeper look at the lyrics and the meaning of these texts, one might judge otherwise though. I guess it is simply the overall mood that makes me feel happy when listening to this album. Even the very mellow ballads do not sound depressing for a bit, maybe a bit melancholic with a twist of hope.

The slightly longer songs are the ones that require most listens to explore their beauty, but these are most likely the better tracks on the album. Although, I must admit it depends on my mood which songs I prefer.

The World I always dreamed of is a fairly typical Pineapple Thief song. Its composition features various changes in instrumentation. The song is basically split in to two different parts. The first is a mellow song with crystal clear guitar playing and some weird keyboard fills in the background. But at about four minutes in, the mood changes into a built-up with new instrumentation. The keyboards and string section are the instruments that really shine in this section.

But the most special song on this album is the epic closing track Light up your Eyes . The fact that this song progressed from a 3.41 min long version on the rushed out “12 Stories down” release to a 15.17 min suite, spanned over two tracks, on this “10 Stories down” album. This song features basic, but effective lyrics, which work as a good support for the brooding atmosphere. The further the song progresses, the more instruments -and thus melodies- come into the picture. The song includes a few breakdown parts, especially in the transition sequence between part 1: I and part 2: Who . The second half of this 15 minutes long suite has a more acoustic approach. This is also typical for this band; they incorporate a lot of acoustic parts in their music. The suite ends with a heavy, for Pineapple Thief standards, instrumental section, which really rocks.

Wow. RADIOHEAD's THIEF. No, rather Hail to the Pineapple !!!

Again a band with RADIOHEAD's influence stands for me higher than RADIOHEAD itself. Not that brilliant as THE AMBER LIGHT, but not as boring as GAZPACHO, "Little Man" has 11 wonderful, mostly melancholical songs, filled with acoustic guitars and mellotrons; less experimental than RADIOHEAD of 2000s, but more melodic and enjoyable for me. The highlights are "We Love You", "Snowdrops", "November", "Wait" and some other songs with that definitive moments. Those who like RADIOHEAD, PORCUPINE TREE and related bands (THE AMBER LIGHT, GAZPACHO, even COLDPLAY and KEANE to some extent) must give this a spin. Recommended !!!

I confess to being a PINEAPPLE THIEF fan for years,and this seventh album from Bruce and the boys continues the excellence that began with their debut "Abducting The Unicorn".It's also great to see this band getting some respect(good ratings) on this site with their last three albums.In fact of the 12 people who rated this one up to this point(including me) 11 have given it either 4 or 5 stars. Things get started with "My Debt to you" which is a rather tame opening track.Acoustic guitar and fragile vocals to open that are contrasted with the fuller sounding sections with strummed guitar and stronger vocals.Good song though. "Shoot First" is a more uptempo song as drums pound away.It calms down when vocals arrive a minute in.The contrast continues.A spacey synth section 3 minutes in. "Sinners" is all about the vocals,strummed guitar and drumming.Love the tasteful guitar 3 1/2 minutes in. "Tightly Wound" is a catchy,mid-paced tune.Heavy drums and synths lead the way early.Vocals a minute in.I like when he sings "Look what you've done,you've made me throw up on your floor".This one features much more aggressive vocals and guitars at times, that are contrasted well with the reserved vocals and mellower soundscapes.Some orchestral-like sounds to end it.Great tune. "The Sorry State" opens with strummed guitar and vocal melodies.Nice.Vocals take over as acoustic guitar continues.Drums and a fuller sound 1 1/2 minutes in.Love the guitar a minute later. "My Bleeding Hand" is an uptempo tune with a solid soundscape.The guitar sounds great 1 1/2 minutes in,and it starts to rip it up before 2 1/2 minutes.Great ending.One of my favs. "Different World" opens with beautifully played acoustic guitar with synths.A powerful soundscape follows.This over 10 minute track takes us through many tempos and moods. "And So Say All Of You" opens with acoustic guitar and synths.Reserved vocals come in.It sounds like mellotron then violin before we get a fuller sound with drums 1 1/2 minutes in.It settles back down beautifully.Amazing tune.Very PORCUPINE TREE-like. "Too Much To Lose" is the over 15 minute closer.And what a closer it is.One of their best tracks ever.Piano,drums and synths in a dreamy intro.Vocals are sung calmly and slowly.Guitar after 3 minutes cries out.The tempo starts to pick up a minute later as the song becomes more powerful.Heavy electric guitar.Fantastic sound 6 minutes in! Before 7 minutes the song stops and becomes quite haunting,drums come in around 7 1/2 minutes followed by spoken words as the haunting sounds continue.Great section.Heavy electric guitar 9 minutes in.It calms down to a whisper before it starts to slowly build.The tempo picks up with some nice guitar.Vocals return 14 minutes in. I admit that these guys can do no wrong in my eyes,at least not yet.Haha.A solid 4 stars.
