Congregación is one of those jewels which shone brilliantly for a short time in the tiny universe of the Chilean Scene of the late '60's and early '70's , and which, precious gem as it was, was nearly unknown to the majority of the public than and now.

Starting out in Valparaiso under the creative leadership of Antonio Smith, its only record is a mixture of placid tunes, full of positive, idealistic messages, expressing love of nature and humankind at the same time. The music is comprised of a mixture of folk, psychedelia and progressive.

On the album his friends Eduardo and Gabriel Parra of Los Jaivas play piano and trutruca (a native spiral-shaped trumpet) respectively, with Julio Numhauser (of Amerindios) on harmonies. The album was produced by Franz Benko, an important figure in Chilean popular music of that era.

Although the band did not gain great fame nationally, Antonio Smith sang at the Viña del Mar Festival, though without acclaim from either the audience or the press.

Antonio Smith, the composer of all the band's songs continued working solo, amking music that was not commercially viable. He later started writing and performing New Age music - as a way of supporting himself - under the name Awankana.

"A weird sort of hippy religious community that had to escape from Chile (along with many Chilean artiste including LOS JAIVAS) and head to Argentina where they were barely tolerated (the local regime didn't have much to envy from the Pinochet years). The community developed a local folk that could lead to a LOS JAIVAS-type folk rock (but without the Andean/Amerindian influences) and had sometimes special arrangements (two cellos in the band), but had a very religious/esoteric preoccupation lyric-wise, although they didn't appear to be a sort of sect like the mid-70's US group called THE TREES (not the UK group of the early 70's) that worshipped anything they could lay their hands upon. They had managed to record a single in 72, that apparently had its share of success, but their sole album was recorded in Argentina in 74 well after the Pinochet coup forced them to flee. Apparently they slowly faded away."
