ALEXL is actually a one-man act, namely that of multi-instrumentalist Alexandre Loureiro, former member of 90's Brazilian bands RAIKA and TURANGALÎLA. This graduate from Rio de Janeiro Federal University already boasts several compositions such as soundtracks for theatre, video, movie and dance. His music, rather chamber-rock like, incorporates elements of YES and GENTLE GIANT (for the polyphonic vocals and highly syncopated rhythms) as well as Frank ZAPPA, perhaps even GENESIS (for its '70s flavour), and of course, Brazilian folk.

For his album "Triz", he enlisted the help of over 20 musicians/singers (both male and female) who play brass, strings, keyboards, guitars, clarinet, flutes, oboe, xylophone and percussion amongst others. His pieces are often short but dense, complex and well worked out, the use of acoustic instruments giving them a sense of lightness even when the music takes on a heavier direction. Far from being a gratuitous patch-up of the bands mentioned above, Loureiro manages to blend all these elements into a coherent whole, giving his music a genuine identity of its own. The only flaws with this album - if one must find some - may be the lack of a real drummer (he uses sequenced drums) and perhaps the production which could have been a little 'warmer'. The overall product is nevertheless brilliant, to say the least, and has a pleasantly exotic Brazilian flavour.

Especially recommended for GENTLE GIANT enthusiasts, but fans of ECHOLYN and SPOCK'S BEARD will also feel at home with ALEXL.
