Rongey's music education began at the piano at age 7 and he wrote his first tunes shortly thereafter. During his teen years, he became a dedicated rock drummer and performed (variously as keyboardist, singer or drummer) in a string of very active recording and performing bands, always demanding that the focus be on original music, and the more strikingly original the better.

After formal classical piano and composition studies, he carried out graduate and post-graduate work at TCU, The Royal College of Music and Keele University. While at the Royal College of Music, Rongey found time to complete his first solo album Book in Hand. This album, sonically redolent of the archaism of London and filled with deeply personal songwriting was released in 1991.

After Book in Hand, Rongey cultivated a career in classical music radio, eventually earning a position as programming manager for Dallas station WRR. He still holds this position, directing programming for this media entity serving hundreds of thousands of classical music fans.

He developed and recorded an elaborate concept album entitled That Was Propaganda, which observes the explosive clash between individualism and collectivism in Russia and Eastern Europe. In addition to Rongey’s compositions and keyboard orchestrations, That Was Propaganda featured the playing of the stupendous virtuoso guitarist Bill Pohl. In 1994, Rongey and Pohl began a collaboration that culminated in the formation of The Underground Railroad.

Needless to say it sounds similar to U.R. and well thats all I need to make me rave about it, it also shares the fact that Bill Pohl is on guitars another reason this rates high with me!! Thay are quite a team and compliment each others playing to a Tee. The only drawback for me is Canned Drumming. a lot of Folks complain about Kurt's vocals but I think they fit nicely Rating --> A- only for the Drums."

"echolyn echolyn echolyn. Ok, I've said it. This album reminds me in a lot of ways of Suffocating the Bloom, so much so that I will make it my opening comment. First of all, you have the keyboards, with those eighth-note patterns very much reminiscent of Buzby, including parts of "St. Petersburg" that will very much remind of "A Suite for the Everyman". The synth timbres are also quite similar (yes, this is not necessarily a good thing). Secondly, Rongey's voice sounds very much like either Kull or Weston (never could tell them apart). Finally, there is a tendency to subtly incorporate odd meters into the songs which is done quite well. Drums are programmed here, but Rongey does a fairly good job with it. Some guitar parts, again calling to mind echolyn, are supplied by Rongey's later Underground Railroad partner in crime Bill Pohl.
This is a long album, stretching out to almost seventy minutes, and one in which there is a fair amount of space. The listener really has to sit back and take it in as it comes, particularly the occasional sprawling, quasi-ambient instrumental stretches. Such interludes do showcase one way in which this album differs from the echolyn approach. Rongey is an intelligent and opinionated person, and I think this comes across in the lyrics, and in the depth of the compositions. Thus, while there are strong enough nods to echolyn that fans of that band should definitely seek this out, I do think there should be an appreciation for this album's own character and qualities. Given that this album was released in 1998, I think it's overdue for some attention."
