RAZOR WIRE SHRINE is a U.S. instrumental tech/extreme band formed by the Rodler brothers(Chris Rodler-rhythm guitar,bass & Brett Rodler-drums).

The duo released their debut album "Going Deaf For A Living" in 2004.The brothers decided to move beyond the,in their own words,"Rush-on-steroids" sound of their first album,and wanted their next album to have a more modern,metallic and complex sound.They added lead guitarist Mike Ohm to the line-up and in 2008 released their second album,"The Power Of Negative Thinking".

Chris and Brett Rodler have done it again. They’ve taken their consummate musicianship and carved another notch in the old progressive rock tree. So get ready for a raucous ride and maybe take a hint from the title Going Deaf For A Living…hold on…it’s going to be a wild ride.

With a musical style that started back in the early nineties with RH Factor, then turned into Leger de Main, reappeared in Gratto, and then showed up again in 2003’s Mythologic is now Razor Wire Shrine. And as you might expect there’s guitars, there’s drums, there’s more guitars and chops galore. Chris (rhythm & bass guitars) and Brett (drums) are joined on this release by Mike Ohm (guitar solos) a graduate of the Guitar Institute of Technology. Borrowing a line from the media release, Chris Rodler describes the music of Razor Wire Shrine thusly; “I suppose this CD could be described as loud, complex, high energy, rhythmically challenging, harmonically sophisticated, metal-coated, instrumental prog-rock with a bad attitude.” It won’t more than one listen of Going Deaf For A Living to verify every single word of his description.

The Rodler’s have always inhabited a world that is on the edge of hard-edged progressive rock and prog-metal. A music inspired by early Rush with loads of time and tempo changes and more than enough musical dynamics to hold your interest throughout. And yet even though this is guitar heavy progressive rock with lots of crunch and distortion I would hesitate to assign the Rodler’s musical efforts to the world of prog metal simply because of its complexity. Just when you think you can’t take much more along comes a dramatic shift creating a softer mood just long enough for you to catch your breath.

Going Deaf For A Living consists of seven compositions most of which are either six or eight minutes in length. While on the initial listening one could be forgiven for thinking these are all aggressive jam sessions, that was my initial thought. It was only after repeated spins that I began to clearly see and hear the compositional interplay between the guitar and drums. Each piece is built on sections that bounce off the other to provide a roller coaster effect of ups and downs and then intense spinning followed by a few loops. In fact, any of the selections on Going Deaf For A Living would make a great soundtrack for an intense coaster ride. And if you listen to it loud enough you’re almost left with that same out-of-breath feeling at the end of each song.

Razor Wire Shrine’s Going Deaf for a Living is a worthy addition to the Rodler’s ongoing progressive rock efforts. The musicianship and compositional skills have steadily improved over the past decade to where these guys are really setting the benchmark for hard-edged progressive rock. If this is where your musical passion lies listen carefully to Razor Wire Shrine, it’s guaranteed to provide an exhilarating ride.
